We have always been at war with Eastasia

War is peace! Freedom is slavery! Ignorance is strength

JuliaCall is blowing my mind 🤯, running GPU-accelerated #JuliaLang code from Python was insanely easy!

California and other wealthy blue states should implement a 1% wealth tax to replace the money illegally impounded by this administration, refundable if money is restored in a timely fashion 🧪

Good for them! If we in the US are going to idiotically refuse to take the smartest young people in the world, someone else should.

When 15 million Americans lose their health care and plunge into personal crisis, none of them are going to give a shit about a made-for-clicks twitter fight between two billionaires arguing about who gets the bigger share of the corruption spoils.

Remember folks, women are too emotional to be president.

Amazing account of ChatGPT's sycophancy and confabulation on steroids. amandaguinzburg.substack.com/p/diabolus-e...

This episode brought to you by the Committee to Increase Child Mortality... Here we're discussing a recent paper out of Stanford that rigorously models how decreasing vaccination rates are going to drive up infections, hospitalizations, and death. 🧪 youtu.be/UwEO-ejbTfM?...

Oh don't worry, the evisceration of the NSF and NIH will cripple lots of the best big state schools too 👍

Awkward way for Joni Ernst to find out she isn’t funny. Let’s stop sending people like Joni Ernst and Lindsey Graham to the Senate.

Look, acknowledging the fact that life is fleeting is a worthy spiritual practice - we will all die, and the shortness of life is an impetus to make the most of our brief moment. It's not an invitation to hasten the death of as many people as possible.

The UC Santa Cruz graduate student was one of hundreds of international students, including at least two others at UCSC, who had their records revoked in April. It’s not clear why the students were targeted.

@timmiller.bsky.social Would love to see more content on this administration's attitude towards (contempt for) science. Eg www.nytimes.com/2025/05/29/w... and www.statnews.com/2025/05/30/n... If you need a biomedical scientist to talk to I've got a nice mic 😅 (or can recommend lots of folks)

Oh, is it actually hard to do science? Is it a challenge to justify your ideas with evidence? Huh, interesting. 🧪

I urge everyone to read Unbreaking’s new page on everything the govt is doing to destroy & diminish medical research funding. It’s the best thing I’ve read on this topic: @lizneeley.bsky.social & co have such done an incredible job. unbreaking.org/issues/medic...

Very happy to see this bravery in the face of likely firing.

New #Audiommunity just droped, this time with the great Abbie Smith (ERV)! No paper this time, just kvetching about the state of American academic science, but it's also a bit inspiring to hear about the work that's being done to combat #HIV 🧪 www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgJe...

Great video podcast from @kevinbonham.com detailing the paper from my main postdoc project in Mike Rosenblum’s lab at UCSF. I was lucky enough to recently start my own lab @jcohenlab.bsky.social m.youtube.com/watch?v=V2Ns...

I have many critiques of the science publishing complex, and there are many reforms that I would advocate. But this is just fucking dumb 🧪

Nick Clegg says asking artists for use permission would ‘kill’ the AI industry

I'm about half way through the book and it is somewhat shockingly compelling. I need sleep more than I need to read just one more chapter of a memoir about weight lifting, and yet...

I liked a lot of this. But the glorification of sleepless nights and the attitude there's some nobility in suffering is a bit much.

I subscribe to the @newyorker.com, I was part of ACT UP, I knew Larry Kramer well and know Tony Fauci too. Daniel Immerwahr's piece on RFKJr, features this and other passages that need a reponse. 1/

tl;dr — this EO co-opts the language of open science to implement a system of political control wherein presidential appointees are given broad latitude to designate any number of reasonable scientific activities and inferences as scientific misconduct, and to penalize those involved accordingly.

I've written (though not published) a ~5000 word blog post making basically this point - title something like "Why emptiness causes problems in politics" But it's very hard to articulate insights about the failure of words in a written document!

I appreciate the offers from other scientists to help Harvard (students, labs, etc) through this attack, but what would be most helpful is for you to use your position to contact your elected representatives and make it clear this fight isn't just Harvard, it will affect you, and their districts too

If you have tenure and you’re carrying on as normal: you are a part of the problem. The leopard doesn’t discriminate between faces. These are extraordinary times and we need you in the fight. It’s not comfortable, there is risk, and it will add more to your plate. But without you, science dies.

It certainly would be unfortunate if thousands of people sent vaguely believable requests for funding each of which would waste a nontrivial amount of time being vetted.

Not sure what you mean - I'm sure these people do their own car repairs, their own plumbing and electrical work, fly their own planes, etc

Press release from Senator Welch about the event... www.welch.senate.gov/hear-from-th...

I mean, that's a better outcome than publishing a bullshit "analysis" that comes to an insane conclusion.

@chrysothemisbrown.bsky.social would you or the first author like to talk about this paper on Audiommunity? audiommunity.org
