When you went to the Iowa Writers Workshop but ended up in journalism

must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away

Don't tell Trump, but the best revenge on Elon would be to fully restore all the NIH and NSF funding that DOGE cut. Ultimate spite move

I would think that the president of the US and a person "running" something like five different companies would be too busy to have a flame war on social media, but here we are....

When everything is "normal", writing and administering an NIH T32 program is crazy. Despite being an immense amount of work (probably the single most effort-demanding grant one can direct), it comes with no salary for the PI...

Several new studies have shown how #astrocytes help regulate the activity of #neurons and #synapses--critical junctions where neurons meet and signal to one another. www.labroots.com/trending/cel...

So we’re doing travel bans again? WTF.

Just a reminder that republicans in congress are giving tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires while cutting health care and food assistance. All at a time of historic wealth inequality in the US. This is a choice we do not have to make.

One of the things that drives me nuts when they complain about how little other countries import from us is the lack of context on the relative size of the economies. Based on GDP, we are ~240x the size of Vietnam. Of course they are going to import less!

The defining feature of “modern conservatism” is a complete lack of curiosity about the world around them. Instead of asking an expert “why is this important?” they just ridicule anything they don’t understand.

Easy solution: we get rid of all the government subsidies to his companies and raise taxes on millionaires/billionaires.

Reviewing NIH grant proposals and am struck (and inspired) by all the brilliant, creative science going on right now. Set against the current political landscape and proposed funding cuts to scientific research, it is clear that we are really screwing ourselves over.

Do these guys even smell their own bullshit? I mean, come on. I’m still not entirely convinced that Yarvin isn’t doing an Andy Kaufman-esque bit that has just gone too deep for too long.

And as a grant reviewer, we are EXPLICITLY FORBIDDEN from using AI because the grants contain confidential information. Yet DOGE just goes and does it.

Elon out here living his dream of going to mars. Without ever leaving the White House.

#NeuroArt Friday: New research by @ohsunews.bsky.social scientists reveals an important role in #brain function involving an abundant, but often-ignored, star-shaped type of glial cell known as #astrocytes. news.ohsu.edu/2025/05/15/o...

I would go beyond the "governing class" and include a large proportion of their supporters.

Would love someone to do a reported piece on what it means to have a governing class stuffed with guys on Barry-Bonds-in-2001 levels of gear.

What a bunch of incompetent dipshits. Guessing they used AI to write the report, which makes sense considering they don't have any expertise or relevant background.

IMHO one reason being a professor is stressful (and professors are constantly late and absent-minded) is that it's not just one job, it's three or four jobs in a trenchcoat. Plowed away the past few days catching up on research stuff and now I'm even more behind on email and admin 😢 It never ends

Quite the day in trumpland: 1: Trump learns about the TACO acronym re: his “deals” (trump always chickens out); 2: court rules the majority of his tariffs are illegal; 3: musk departs the administration, taking Stephen Miller’s wife along the way 😬😂

Looking forward to Jake Tapper’s book on trumps cognitive decline slated for release in 2030

Weird, considering that he lives in Florida. But then again, he’s dumber than a box of rocks.

Trump corruption story so bad it gets the rare straightforward NYT headline www.nytimes.com/2025/05/27/u...

More first amendment violations. This will escalate I assume until there is a total shutdown of immigration. His last remaining leverage. www.politico.com/news/2025/05...

Scott Pelley—American author and reporter for CBS News for more than 31 years, did not hold back

John Williams stood alone, watching himself in the mirror. “I’m tall.” “I’m Dave.” “I’m tall.” “I’m Dave.” He tried to focus on his mannerisms, on the intonation of his voice. By all appearances, he was now an enthusiastic right-wing militia member.

Yeesh. That is like the longest run on sentence I’ve even seen. Over 100 words.

Well played, wordle. Seems to be the word of the year.

This could explain his lack of basic understanding of economics 🤔
