The National Institutes of Health had to stop considering new grant applications, delaying funding for research into diseases ranging from heart disease and cancer to Alzheimer's and allergies.

To: [email protected] Re: Five activities this week As a regional OSHA lead, this week I inspected a local Chocolate Factory and found: 1. Slave labor 2. An open chocolate river with no guardrails 3. Improper waste disposal 4. Experimental products lacking FDA approval 5. Unsafe elevator for employees

Goosebump producing news this week out of Oregon Health and Science University in the diagnosis of pancreatic CA. They developed a groundbreaking blood test, called PAC-MANN. This new test can find pancreatic cancer in just 45 minutes, even in its earliest stages.

What a shock!

Looks like F99s are gone again. 🤬

So excited for this PTEN sensor! A really important first-in-class sensor that lets us explore cell signalling in vivo.

How much is Congress cutting from their $6.5 billion/year budget? Don’t you think congress can operate on say, maybe, $5 Billion? And each congressman has 18 staff, they could operate on say, 14? What about the White House?

I could see why they would be confused and not know that, because the name is the “National Nuclear Security Administration”

I'm struggling to understand why Trump and Musk are conducting an all-out siege on American medical research. I understand the corrupt and/or ideological reasons for a lot of the other things they're doing, but the systematic assault on NIH et al feels like destruction purely for destruction's sake.

Its pretty clear that the indiscriminate firing of 1000s of probationary positions (fewer legal protections, can be fired without cause) across many departments isn't to achieve any type of policy objective or even political outcomes. It is purely a power play by doge/trump. Just absolute stupidity.

writing up the progress report for one of my grants and wondering if there is even going to be anyone at the NIH to read it...

Breaking out the good scotch that is normally reserved for good grant scores/NOAs. But at this point, just submitting a grant is achievement enough. And who knows if it will even get reviewed...

Just a reminder that Germany was the center of scientific progress until the Nazis suppressed, drove away, or killed all the non-Nazi scientists.

Worth spelling out that Sassoon is a member of the Federalist Society and clerked for Scalia. And she rightly call our the blatant quid-pro-quo and corruption in the decision to drop the charges against Adams. Wish there were some republicans in congress had even half the backbone she does.

Good old Mitch McConnell. Sometimes doing the right thing, but only when it doesn’t matter.

There is literally HIV being transmitted from mom to baby because of the illegal shutdown of US AID and now Trump’s State Department wants to spend 400 million dollars on Tesla cyber trucks. This is not about efficiency. It’s a smash and grab.

I looked at the two grants from my institution that were in this “woke DEI” database. One was on vocal learning in songbirds and the other had something to do with 3D printed biomaterials for gene delivery. Woke? DEI? Give me a fucking break

Brianna Keilar: Do you think that calling Elon Musk a dick is effective messaging? Congressman Robert Garcia: Well, he is a dick.

This database of 'woke' grants compiled by Ted Cruz is spectacularly dumb. www.commerce.senate.gov/2025/2/cruz-....

I keep seeing people saying Trump is just doing what he was elected to do. But I don’t remember hearing campaign promises to massively increase unemployment.

We really have some of the dumbest MFers alive in Congress

If you want to understand what is happening with the Musk Administration's changes to NIH Facilities and Administration rates (F&A), it would be hard to do better than to read this filing. It's an outstanding summary.

NIH Updates Good news: It appears that at least of the submitted F31 diversity supplements for which the study section had disappeared from eRA commons are reappearing with the original study section. Still uncertain future, but it's a step. 1/2

Petition to Reverse the NIH Indirect Cost Cap initiated by Tom Maniatis. Please amplify Sign the Petition: chng.it/kK2HMP5pGk "Share with Leadership & Faculty. Reach out to professional societies, biotech and pharma leaders, and philanthropic organizations to raise awareness and mobilize support."

If you are a NIH funded researcher and your state is not on this list, you need to be calling your AG office

I’ll bet Collins falls for “Nigerian prince” email scams at least once a month.

This is as good a summary as any of Trump's approach to government: it's awful and I don't know anything about it

The new Children of Dune movie looks amazing
