Friends, many of you know Dr. Yecid Ortega. He's not been seen or heard from since Feb. 14. If you have any information about Yecid's whereabouts, please get in touch with findyecid.gmail.com. Please share.

THIS is how you steam fish. All the ginger 😋 #homecooking

Back in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 to present at the HKIS Literacy Institute! Grateful for the opportunity to work with teachers on issues related to multilingualism, biliteracy, and identity in education.

Stop saying yes to things. Stop saying yes to things. Stop saying yes to things.

This was US$12.

I tried using ChatGPT to help me elaborate on a few talking points for a presentation, and while some of the points are valid and add to the presentation, I find myself SPIRALING w/ thoughts that I *have* to mention these points to be thorough. *Delete conversation* No time for that. You do you.

Don’t mind me treating 🦋 like Instagram. On 長洲, my absolute favorite island of Hong Kong. 🇭🇰

Happy to be back 🫶🏽😋

Oh, to be back in Hong Kong where a crowded escalator at rush hour has everyone standing on the right so folks can walk up and down on the left. 🥹 It’s nice to be in a society of mutual respect and understanding.

Off the plane, a quick shower at home, and then off to a school where my dear friend is the principal to experience the daily ins & outs of leading a school for Hong Kong’s ethnic minorities. Loved hanging out w/ the kids, chatting w/ the teachers/social worker, and learning about their curriculum.

Not to hate, but why are double spaces after a period still a thing? #amediting

And boarding the plane, the flight attendant hesitated and said “really?” when they stated my name, Mr. Wong, and looked at my face. Tho these microaggressions occur everywhere and all the time, I forget how explicit they can be in Asia. Still, it’ll be good to be back. Here we go! 🇭🇰 #mixed

I am absolutely giddy thinking about this 14 hour night flight to Asia by myself, sans children. Sleep. Music. Maybe a movie. Perhaps work. All interrupted. The possibilities are endless.

I just found out that a child I taught in fourth grade is now a kindergarten teacher and this makes my heart so happy 🫶🏽

Bilingualism is more than just speaking two languages—it cultivates resilience, adaptability, and a deep sense of connection. Here are some thoughts, inspired from my multilingual daughter, on the hidden strengths of language learning. www.linkedin.com/pulse/hidden...

Rest easy, our beloved Aunt Carol <3 www.cliffordshoemaker.com/obituaries/c... Links at the bottom for those interested in honoring her life w/ contributions to research for individuals living w/ intellectual & developmental disabilities, or to the hospice care home where she spent her final months.

I am so deeply moved by the many proposals we've received. There are so many ways that our collective work, perspectives, experiences & talents are bringing voice & legitimacy to the notion of "beyond perfect" multilingualism. Please allow us the honor of working w/ you in this edited volume. ⏰:2/28

Daughter hums in the backyard as I review proposals on the couch. Singing resonates deep in the soul (and in our family history), so this warms the heart on a Sunday afternoon.

Vietnamese food ftw

I forget how big an event Valentine’s Day is in American schools. Lol.

Prepping teacher workshops and feeling imposter syndrome because I do not know the EXACT context of each teacher (which I know is unrealistic), but I'm pushing through. I was a teacher. I now teach teachers. I know research. I break it down all the time for teachers. I can do this. #selftalk

Got thrown under the bus by a student I invested heavily in and batted for multiple times last semester. Cool cool cool.

I'm so excited to share this special issue of the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. A great set of articles (all free!) on helping adolescents develop the foundational literacy skills they need to pursue their goals in and out of school. ila.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/19362706...

Our beloved (great) aunt passed away. The family followed 5 yo’s lead to paint rocks to and about her for our garden. 🪴 John 14:3-4

Does raising a multilingual child require strict language boundaries, or is there room for flexibility? The One Parent, One Language model promises clear structure, but what happens when the assigned language feels out of place? Perhaps its time to break the rules. www.linkedin.com/pulse/one-pa...

My 5yo daughter has her first 聽寫 (dictation) next week so I was testing her on 左右 (left, right). Her question to me was, “Is 左 the one with an ‘I’ or a ‘box’?” And I just love her fluid translingual sense making. 🫶🏽 #PhDad #translanguaging

How has nobody reinvented the bubble wand so that it absolutely will not spill when in the hands of children? #milliondollaridea

It's taken a month of unwinding in my relatively chill semester, and wow, I am grateful. I get to teach teachers. I get to give PDs in bilingual schools. I get to edit a journal that amplifies teacher voices. I get to do/share research that centers teacher perspectives. And finally back in the gym.

Steaming breakfast for the kiddos.

Happy 100 Days of School 🫶🏽

So I decided to write a short piece about it. bsky.app/profile/kevi...

Too often, multilinguals hold themselves to impossible standards, but what if we let go of the shame and embraced the way our voices carry our identities, experiences, and the many worlds we navigate? www.linkedin.com/pulse/speaki...

As a multilingual person, you almost always feel like some aspect of your language(s) isn’t enough. As a monolingual person, that’s less often the case. Now isn’t that interesting? 🧐

Good riddance, January. Hello, Feb!

Inbox zero. (Yes, there are folders and to-do items, but the incoming inbox is zero and that is what I'm celebrating)

Red lanterns, lion dancers & the laughter of children—Lunar New Year at our bilingual school is more than just a celebration; it’s a living, breathing connection to generations of tradition. Click to read my short bilingual reflection below. www.linkedin.com/pulse/%E9%AB...

I just applied for my substitute teaching license (even though I already have an elementary school teaching credential). Excited for the opportunities ahead. I miss being in schools.

At a French coffee shop near daughter’s elementary school working before popping in to volunteer/read aloud at the library. #workingparent

Happiness is…

Something I've been learning (in academia and, yes, also in life) is that if I say yes to something or pursue an opportunity, it can be an end in itself. It does not have to be something that opens doors for future opportunities to open doors to open doors to open doors. #academia
