I did not enjoy learning this!

We’re announcing new legislation — the No Secret Police Act (SB 627) — to ban local/state/federal law enforcement, w/ some exceptions, from covering their faces when interacting w/ the public & require them to wear identifying info. The secret police behavior we’re seeing destroys trust & must end🧵

This is both a compliment and a criticism. It is amazing how many really good academics there are in the UK given how badly they pay.

It will illuminate something, that's for sure

There is something very deeply weird about British science fiction.

Uh, you could probably model this decision formally, might be fun. The preference profile of "Ali" would be fun to work out

Update: It appears "I enjoy pie" is indeed a complete and coherent biographical statement, I am for one heartened by that

Does it still count if I already won this on Twitter?

Thankfully it's only temporary, I guess

I am currently chairing a network very close to my heart, namely the Eastern European Network for Philosophy of Science. It finally has an account here @eenphilsci.bsky.social. To start here's a moving piece by a Bulgarian philosopher and a founding member Lilia Gurova on how it all began.

Looking for philosophers to follow on Bluesky? Here are over 2,000 of them on my #philosophy (bsky.app/profile/did:...) and philosophy organisations (bsky.app/profile/did:...) lists! #PhilSky

For non-scientists: the funding rate is somewhere between 7% to ~25% (rare) for NIH or NSF grants, depending on where you are applying. Grants are reviewed by a panel of peers who read the grants, score them, then debate the ratings for 1-2 days to rank them. It is INCREDIBLY competitive already.

That is 54, 5-year NIH biomedical research grants. Or 270 years worth of biomedical research.

One thing social media has taught me (though I have definitely experienced it in other media too): a lot of people, even quite smart people, are worryingly bad at reading comprehension. For instance: many have trouble distinguishing between someone *describing* a thing and *advocating* that thing.

macro theorists describing the rest of the model:

Economics is mostly about choosing whether something is "marginal", "in equilibrium", or "rational"

Philosophy is mostly about choosing whether something is

I feel like writing a post with a question and turning off replies is a little rude. If you don't want answers, don't ask a question, right?

Okay so now that I'm not trying to cross a border, I've got some tips on how to make sure protests stay safe and peaceful.

the energy with which I’m approaching the day

This is what they took from us
