Protein organ clocks, as assessed in over 6,000 people (~4,000 plasma proteins, 8 organs) with 20-year follow-up are predictive for over 30 age-related diseases www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Culture File Presents: The Comfort Zone Mulholland Drive: Anna Kornbluh ("Immediacy") joins Luke Clancy to wave Colm Tóibín off on a journey out of his comfort zone, and into David Lynch's mysterious, melancholic drift into Hollywood's dream machine/mincer.

"[Sitka plantations are] the reason people in our county were without power for 19 days." The Irish county most infested by alien monoculture deadzones - Leitrim - has had enough. Time to ditch this disastrous forestry model. www.rte.ie/news/regiona...

"I am just telling you the f&%king truth." At some point a professor who has otherwise made a respectable impression when invited to these popular news shows will completely lose his cool and shout "We are so f&%ked!" That person may end up being me. CNN? MSNBC? Fox? youtu.be/L99-t5OvSbk?...

This ancient, wild oak in my place is about 12m from the edge of a road. It has stood there for 100s of years, supporting a whole web of life, bothering nobody. Now they're talking about removing it and countless others, because in Ireland (1% native forest left), nature ALWAYS has to pay.

Super great that one of the major funding bodies that supports my physics research is now officially in opposition to me being the one to do it.

We got a message from the university to remove any use of the "DEI", "diversity", "equity", or "inclusion" from all public-facing documents. They said that even "biodiversity" is being flagged by the federal government. We live in the dumbest timeline.

Coltsfoot by the River Cam at Hauxton near #Cambridge only just starting to flower. #WildFlowerHour

Whenever you hear someone sneer about scientific research that seems useless to them — “they’re studying the spit of lizards?!” — remind them that’s exactly how we got Ozempic. globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

I think this is my favourite report cover of all time. Any others?

The cooling impact of La Nina is having no effect Instead of cooling this year as scientists predicted - the heat is ratching up This shows a dramatic shift in our climate is already happening now You should be very worried - I am Earth will be unrecognizable in a matter of years

Common Field Speedwell, Veronica persica - #wildflowerhour A neophyte, only present in Britain for c200 years but now very common & continuing to spread. Its ability to thrive on intensively managed land, & to flower year-round are no doubt key factors. plantatlas2020.org/atlas/2cd4p9...

A female Hazel flower for #WildFlowerHour tonight. I'll be back onto #TheWinter10 next week 😂

Hello February. A lovely sunrise here in the sunny Southeast at Wexford as that cloud moves East temperatures range from 1c in East to 11c in West. Some patchy drizzle today but dryer further East.

One year ago today, Israel killed Hind—firing 355 bullets at her. First, they murdered her family. Then, they executed her. Then, they bombed the ambulance and killed the paramedics who tried to save her. She was only 6 years old. And yet, Israel faces no accountability.

It’s important to know that a lot of productive activity is happening in person and offline, too. Not all of it can be broadcast online, but we’ve had hundreds of people showing up to our trainings, mobilizations, and more. Keep going. Tyranny is eroded by a sea of small acts. Everything matters.

Here are the updated "daily color stripes" with data through from January 1, 1940 to January 28, 2025. For anyone paying attention, the current 30-day global surface temperature anomaly is 1.76°C above the pre-industrial baseline.

For more dire facts about Ireland’s forests (and lack thereof) I recommend “Island of Woods” by Paul McMahon

I sent emails to Government Minister’s two years ago and again last year about lack of planning for extreme weather and no flood warnings. Today I sent the below email, hopefully we will finally see some more planning, resourcing and real adaptation.

All in a day’s work — tasting 12 different marmalades made by Tom and Laura Sinnot at Wexford Home Preserves for an Irish Times Food story. Great marmalades and really nice folks.

Thanks to @pocketwildingie.bsky.social for promoting the fabulous Basal Project: basalproject.org.uk It's a great resource for anyone looking to identify wild plants from their juvenile leaves/ basal rosettes. The site was set up by @richardmabbutt.bsky.social, one of our amazing #BSBImembers.

This is an interesting idea that is taking place in #Wexford later this year #ClimateEmergency

This cover is a fossil crustacean! 🦑🧪 The paper shows that Antarctic deep sea ecology changes quickly in response to changes in temperature and nutrients

That high resolution AROME model out to 9am shows gusts I’ve never seen this model show before for Ireland and this model is one of the best there is for Ireland. Anyone saying this is just another storm is in for a rude awakening. This will be an historic storm. #StormÉowyn

Brilliant satirical cover from Private Eye, mocking spineless media organisations and journalists who submit and cower in the face of power 👏

Human rights activist Khalida Jarrar is amongst the Palestinian hostages freed by the so-called state of Israel. She has suffered significant medical problems made only worse by occupation forces refusing to allow her treatment. Haaretz called her trials "a Kafkaesque perversion of military law."

This is Zeina, a 19-year-old university student from Jerusalem. Israel kidnapped her, caged her, and held her hostage—without charges, without reason. She was freed today, but her story won’t make headlines. Because the world has decided Palestinian suffering isn’t newsworthy.

Having been looking for the past two weeks around every Hazel tree and hedge…. Hurray Hazel Flowers #WildFlowerHour

A hulking great old alder by a river in Uragh Woods, Beara. Ancient trees like this are so special and rare. But just imagine how once, they were almost everywhere. 🌏
