Happy #InternationalWomensDay to all the amazing and powerful women in my life. Langford has 4 women on council and an amazing staff team of women including equal representation in senior director positions. There is also an excellent & supportive group of women politicians in the CRD. 1of2

Seedy Saturday coming up this weekend! reimagineus.ca/events/

This week I uploaded 4 city budget documents into AI and generated a deep dive podcast on Langford’s 5-year financial plan. As with everything AI there are inaccuracies however it is surprisingly engaging and it has me thinking about the future of this tool for civic engagement.

I have to give the Ford government credit for knowing when to call an election. With a lack of dialogue around healthcare, housing and education, this is a government formed as a response to Trump.

9 yo, “It’s pink shirt day, are you wearing your shirt today Dad?” Dad, “You bet! Get lost bullies!” 9 yo … sighs and then proceeds to lecture on how it is inconsiderate, unkind and more importantly ineffective to bully a bully. The kids are doing ok I think. We should probably all take notes.

While learning about, lifting and celebrating black voices is an important focus for how we celebrate Black History Month, it is also important to hold space for lived experiences like these so we can grow and do better as a community.

So far the 2025 growing season is off to a good start with a 97% success rate for germination. Outside we have figs, blueberries, peaches, apples, herbs and fresh eggs from our chickens. These baby tomatoes and lettuce will add to our exploration in family food security.

Langford team for the Coldest Night of the Year “Let’s change the tune for people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness... because it’s cold out there.” CNOY 2025 cnoy.org/location/vic... Thank you PCFSA and Our Place for the meaningful work you do in the west shore

I dropped by the Repair Café put on by ReImagine West Shore and it was busy! My favourite part was the ringing of the cowbell with every successful repair. There was a gap with skills for woodworking repairs so I have offered my Red Seal be put to use for the next event in September. reimagineus.ca

It’s Family Day in BC and since my family loves board games, I thought I would do a short thread on board games related to growing cities. All of these come recommended by family and friends for spending time and being playful with the important people in your life. Have fun and happy Family Day!

West Shore Parks and Recreation is planning for the future of recreation in the west shore. Public engagement for this important planning document has just begun and there are several options for participation. Find out how you can have your say at, emc.mysocialpinpoint.ca/westshoremas...

Fredericton is cold and beautiful and cold. Low temperatures aren’t really my jam, that’s why we moved to the island. Visiting is pretty nice though. I love the east coast colourful houses here too.

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out. Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation. Say equity, which a just society should pursue. Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

“And the politics of real or imagined grievances can tear at the fabric of a community” Fear is being leveraged and used over reality, and it is persisting in our democracy. As a result, our society is becoming more divisive and we are losing sight of what makes us beautiful & resilient: diversity.

Reminder to provide your input on the 2025 budget survey! The survey closes end of day tomorrow, February 9th. Your input is one of several important considerations Council will use to guide their decisions for the 2025 budget and beyond. How to provide your feedback: LetsChatLangford.ca/Budget

Langford to Victoria is a 40-60min ride. My partner makes the trip daily and I ride it about once a week. A big factor in our decision is secure storage. Because of this our parking footprint is much smaller, our family costs are lower and we can free up more parking and road space for other users.

I’m 43 years old and yesterday was the first time I made maple syrup candy in fresh snow. Somehow I missed out on this Canadian childhood experience. It was a super fun activity with the kids… a little hard on my teeth though.

I was recently gifted a previously loved Kindle and my partner and I have been discussing the economics of ebook vs paper books purchasing. I’ll be interested to see if this becomes an option in Canada and if we can start supporting local BC bookstores for ebook purchases.

I have deep gratitude for our partners at the Salvation Army for facilitating a warming centre as our community experiences our first cold weather event of the year.

This was approved by Langford Council last night!

Transit Equity Day is honoured because it is Rosa Parks’ birthday. 🚌 It is a day on which we call for equitable and sustainable public transportation for all. To learn more about municipal transit equity initiatives, check out our transportation handbook: https://buff.ly/3zITWXw

Today we had snow play and a piano recital. Tomorrow is lots of coffee and preparing for meetings in the week ahead. There is so much happening right now at a nation scale, I’m glad to be working and doing what I can to make lives better at the community level.

First snowfall of the season in Langford today. My kiddo’s fleeting childhood always keeps me grounded in the moment when the world news is overwhelming.

Cllr. Szpak and I have a Notice of Motion coming forward to the Feb. 3rd council meeting to advocate to the Province of B.C. for free pelvic floor physiotherapy as part of standard postpartum care under BC MSP. If supported by council, it would be considered by AVICC in April.

Wherever you stand on the SLO program, this is a sad day for democracy. Where we see deep unease about knowing the future of democracy in the world today, it is very disappointing to see a removal of a democratically elected board.
