Well, at least we’re still doing better than the children in Gaza. None of our kids have to worry about being bombed, injured, or watching their parents get killed… news.sky.com/story/amp/is...

Even more reporting on how scientists who applied for fellowships now branded "DEIA" are getting fully excluded from fellowship review pools, rather than being moved to the general pool. It was never truly about merit to this administration. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/s...

The National Institutes of Health had to stop considering new grant applications, delaying funding for research into diseases ranging from heart disease and cancer to Alzheimer's and allergies.

Check out the scientific journey behind the newest FDA-approved pain medication! 💊 Learn how NIH-funded research played a crucial role—both directly and indirectly—in bringing this breakthrough to life. 🧪

Tyler Nelson (who we are actively collaborating with at UF in @khannalabuf.bsky.social lab) and Robert Gregg (who used to be at UTD, and whose work I deeply admire) were very brave to speak up for this new article in NY Times: www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/s...

At least two suits are in the works from the teams that brought the earlier pause cases: A collection of State Attorney Generals and DemocracyForward. The courts can't act until somebody asks them to, and the legal teams need to get their ducks in a row (and they are busy doing this).

“What this does is discriminate against people who are underrepresented,” The reviewer added that evaluation for the general and diversity pools are the same. “I can’t stress enough that an undeserving grant “is not going to get funded, whether it’s diversity or not” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/s...

Grad school dreams are shrinking. Universities like Penn, Pitt & Vanderbilt are slashing admissions, NIH funding cuts loom, & hiring freezes stall careers. Aspiring scientists face closed doors, lost opportunities, and a broken pipeline. This isn’t just a pause—it’s a crisis. #SaveScience #HigherEd

Hello Bluesky! Let’s try a first post…here’s my latest story for @naturebiotech.bsky.social on @vertexpharma.bsky.social non-opioid pain killer and next-gen NaV1.8 inhibitors in the pipeline rdcu.be/ealj0

100%. Our colleagues at NIH are real heroes looking out for our well being and the future of science in our nation.

Thanks, Rob, for leading the charge with unwavering dedication! Critical for pain leaders like you to spread this message of positivity and hope for the next generation of pain scientist and also discoveries for pain management for patients in #chronicpain.

Yale School of Medicine has just issued policy guidance for faculty bridge funding in cases of sudden termination of awarded federal grants, with the goal of enabling "reimagining/pivoting" their program. click.message.yale.edu?qs=315b0d3eb...

Excellent thread!

This breaks my heart đź’” Some of my most incredible trainees were Pitt PhDs, and I helped run the neuro grad program (CNUP) for a few years - one of the best and largest in the country I know this is the fiscally responsible thing to do but still, it is infuriating

In a new editorial from Editor-in-Chief of PAIN @karenddavis.bsky.social reaffirms the journal’s commitment to considering #diversity, #DEI, and #GenderIdentity in pain research and management. bit.ly/3D5WgJO

I chatted with a program director at NIH for a half hour just now It's clear that the people who make American science happen are doing everything they can to keep making it happen in a very difficult environment They deserve our respect and gratitude

Register for USASP 2025! From April 29 – May 2, pain experts from across disciplines will gather in Chicago & online to advance pain research & treatment at this hybrid event. Don't miss this chance to engage, learn, and innovate. bit.ly/3QgPYtR #PainScience #PainResearch

NIH research saves lives and powers the economy. In California, it supports ~56K jobs and $13.55B in economic activity. Cuts to NIH funding puts lives and livelihoods in jeopardy. Congress must act—tell your lawmakers to save medical research funding now! ucdav.is/4i4zFfB #SaveNIHresearch

The court ordered that NIH grant funding be unfrozen, so The Regime found a way around it. For NIH grants to be funded, a review panel must rank them. In order for a review panel to meet, they must post it on the Federal Register. Submissions to the Federal Register are now on hold “indefinitely”.

Interesting study supports the idea that tissue trauma triggers pronociceptive antibodies in chronic musculoskeletal pain. Using MIA-treated mice & OA patient samples, Wade et al. found that B-cell dependent antibodies contribute to cartilage injury-induced pain. journals.lww.com/pain/abstrac...

PSA: When a journal writes to you with a deadline to check the proofs ("PLEASE RETURN YOUR PROOFS IN 16 MINUTES!"), do not panic. If you miss the deadline, what happens? Nothing. You are paying them! Do it when you are ready. It is worth taking time to check your paper. #AcademicSky

Very important to get this word out!

A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter. By @avaskham.bsky.social bit.ly/3X8ngz8

Please don’t stop sharing and posting your science because of the current attack on it, it is still valuable and reminds us what the fight is for

DOGE says they are saving 4 billion, but... ➡️ Every dollar in NIH research grants generates $2.46 in economic activity ($93 billion in 2023!) ➡️ The $1.7 trillion US biotech industry depends on public-funded science ➡️ Both of those fund a $57 billion US market for scientific tools and equipment
