Nonpartisan civil services are more efficient, more productive, more experienced, higher morale, protect taxpayers against graft, and are associated with lower sovereign-debt costs and stronger growth. Supporting them shouldn't be a partisan thing! www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Indirect cost rates are not my favorite thing to think about, but this is a great breakdown. This is short term "savings" that will harm us all in the long run.

Exclusive: President Trump's nominee as Air Force Secretary, currently a top official at the national spy satellite agency, arranged a multibillion-dollar contract solicitation in a way that favored Elon Musk's SpaceX, according to seven people familiar with the contract reut.rs/4b7MUKt

It is wasteful, not efficient, to allow tuberculosis medications sit on the shelves instead of saving lives when the meds have already been paid for with our tax dollars.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

Demanding "Patriotic Education" is dangerous. Not all American history is inspiring and ennobling. The truth is that we have failed to achieve our highest ideals many times. We can be proud of what is good while also acknowledging the truth of history. Read in full at search.app/jy56Gqourber...

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Buried in the flurry of Executive Orders last night is one that halts all funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Yes, the law that Republicans and Democrats came together to pass that fixes our roads, modernizes old bridges and makes drinking water safer.

BREAKING: Officers enforcing immigration laws will now be able to arrest migrants at sensitive locations like schools and churches after the Trump administration threw out policies limiting where those arrests could happen.

Bishop Budde's courage to challenge the new president and his administration is courage and truth telling in action. Following in the steps of Jesus by speaking truth to power and seeking mercy and compassion.

"Pete Hegseth’s former sister-in-law, in an affidavit given to senators on Tuesday, alleged that the Pentagon chief pick caused his second wife to fear for her safety... Hegseth also stated that women should not have the right to vote or work, according to the affidavit."

This scares me.

We need each other on this dangerous terrain. Indeed. The 14th century poet Hafiz is relevant today, and a reflection on this poem by current day writer Parker Palmer: onbeing.org/blog/parker-...

As expected, Trump’s first day in office brought chaos. Immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, and federal programs were all targeted in his first wave of executive orders—but not everything will stick. The Big Picture breaks it all down in this handy guide to Trump's most deplorable day one actions.

It just keeps getting crazier.

I wish I could personally apologize to Thom Hartmann @hartmannreport.com for not posting enough of his amazing writings. I’ll try to remedy that as America plunges ever more deeply into #ChristoFascism, #Kakistocracy and #Broligarchy! open.substack.com/pub/thomhart...

Here's our handy illustrated guide to all of Trump's conflicts of interest. Laid out in one place so you can follow the gameboard as it plays out starting Monday. Compared to first term, this playing board is more complicated--and to ethics lawyers--more troubling www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Visiting Chicago's beautiful Garfield Park Conservatory today. The incoming president claims the deportation of migrants will begin in Chicago on Tuesday. Refugees, immigrant families, public schools, and social service providers are preparing for different scenarios. May warmth and safety prevail.

History is important. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

When life feels stressful, my favorite thing is to arrive at yoga and take in the spaciousness of an expensive empty room. Space to breathe. And I don't have to clean or manage the space. Natural light, beautiful floors and other people joining me are all bonuses. The big empty room is so lovely.

It remains unclear whether the deal reached by Israel and Hamas will lead to a permanent ceasefire and the release of all the remaining Israeli hostages. But more than at any previous point, 15 months of harrowing bloodshed appear to be coming to an end.

ABC, NBC & CBS dedicated about 16 minutes of airtime last night to the California wildfires without once mentioning climate change. Since the news failed do it's job, here's a short summary of the role of climate change and wildfire risk: www.noaa.gov/noaa-wildfir...

Terrible things are happening in the world, and good things too. The fires in California, the escalation of destruction and lives destroyed in Gaza, the president elect talking about Greenland and the Gulf of America. Horrible and strange. But also good things are happening.

Yes there are some serious allegations against the Trump nominees that must be investigated. But let’s not lose sight of this: most of these people are scandalously unqualified.

This is the most important chart published in America this week. (By @dylanlscott.bsky.social)

Mid-November here in Chicago.
