What's the worst state to drive in and why is it Massachusetts

I mean. We're like way past impeachment territory right?

Lots of bad but this rose cardamom latte is bringing some good. 🌹

1. After getting some further insight into changes at NSF (thanks to those who reached out), I deleted a previous post where I tried to make sense of Cheatham's memo as reported in the Science story below.

The EPA is halting funding for its main science division, and forcing its 1,500 staff to re-apply for their jobs or leave. Insane www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I know you all know this, but apparently it needs to be said that basic science is a NECESSARY PRECURSOR to translational science

On NSF Grant Terminations- even if your termination letter says that you cannot appeal, there is a legal basis for you to appeal within 30 days in PPAPG www.nsf.gov/policies/pap... and in Uniform Guidance 200.340 www.ecfr.gov/current/titl.... Appeal and send a message!

Am I reading this right? New divisions of the agency will exclude ecology and evolution?

12 highly motivated undergraduate STEM scholars had been offered funding (20 hrs/wk) this summer from the @NSF LSAMP program at Missouri State University. As far as we know, they no longer have summer funding or any funding going forward. This was the next generation of NSF scientists.

somebody hold me back from entangling myself in this clownish post on my town's facebook about how libraries are unnecessary and an "ancient relic"

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey mayor is arrested at ICE detention center where he was protesting its opening, acting US attorney says.

🎓 graduation weekend 🎓 a perfect time to remind parents what NSF means for them and their kids #saveNSF #withoutNSF

The U of MN reports it has lost 70 federal grants, totalling more than $22,000,000 grants that are primarily located in the biomedical, environmental, and energy and natural resources work.

Today is a day for action, scientist friends. Don't just go back to whatever paper you're editing or experiment you're running. Talking points: bsky.app/profile/davi... Other advice: ecoevoevoeco.blogspot.com/2025/05/tale...

More scientists need to start using the word that describes this sort of thing: the people doing this are, objectively, segregationists

For some reason I thought bringing half a baked potato for my lunch was a good idea.

This seems like a good day to re-up this advice.

nothing good has ever come from presenting disabled and sick people as a literal threat to the nation

🧪 Data update on NSF grant terminations Including last Friday's terminations, STEM education grants now account for... 54% of terminated NSF grants (751 of 1381) 75% of terminated NSF funding ($590M of $783M) The next generation of scientists is being targeted. #WithoutNSF #SaveNSF

LISTEN TO ME. *NOW* IS THE TIME TO CALL YOUR REP AND SENATORS. NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU DO, OR WHERE IN THE US YOU LIVE. I'M HERE BEGGING YOU. #SaveNSF Here are your talking points: democrats-science.house.gov/imo/media/do...

“NSF awards had once been considered prestigious. Now with this post hoc politicization of the merit review process they are merely a stamp indicating that a funded proposal has passed a secretive political test administered by an Administration that is unparalleled in its hostility to U.S. science”

I honestly have no idea whether it's even worth the time and effort to write and submit a NSF grant.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty senate voted this week in support of joining the Big 10 Mutual Defense Compact. www.wpr.org/news/uw-madi...

🚨 Breaking: NSF faces radical shake-up as officials abolish its 37 divisions 1️⃣ Removes/demotes division director leaders 2️⃣ Forced layoff notices to NSF staff going out tonight 3️⃣ More grant terminations expected tomorrow One glimmer of hope: the 8 directorates appear to be staying

What IRB is overseeing this again

In 2017, I did an REU at the Chicago Botanic Garden with @seedystudies.bsky.social and @kayrihavens.bsky.social and we wrote a paper based on the work and it's finally published! Read it here: journals.publishing.umich.edu/glbot/articl...

Please share. 🙏 I'm searching for an RA to join my group this fall. 1-year fixed term, with the possibility for extension depending on funding. Suitable to a post-bacc or masters interested in plant genomes, epigenetics, or reproductive biology. DM, email, or comment with questions.

Great news - we will be searching for a tree physiologist (tenure track) to join the Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences, UBC Forestry, later this year. Stay tuned! (Please share.)

Here is brand-new data about the role of pyrenoids, CCM, and lipid droplets in hornworts: Our results show that underwater conditions trigger notable functional (protein-level) reconfigurations with significant inner-plastidial rearrangements Feedback welcome!

This is a lot of cancelled grants worth of fighter jets.

Casar: "I've knocked on 1000s of doors and not a single time has someone said, 'Thank God you're here. I want to ask about trans people fencing'..what the hell are we doing? We are here bc MTG thinks if she picks on trans folks, she can avoid having a discussion about allegations of insider trading"

I know this is such a long shot rn, but if any botanical friends are looking for a super talented postbac (tech, etc) please let me know! I have an excellent candidate who is skilled in informatics, plant phys, general lab skills etc. 🌾🧪

just so we’re all clear: the reason they keep using dolls as their example is because they’re trying to frame caring about material stuff as feminine and thus inherently shameful

Whoever posted the kapusta recipe in an elevator on campus, I'd like you to know my Polish mom has decided to try out your recipe and will report back.

I got this quote for a pretty basic microscope today. What a fun time to be setting up a new lab.

We still have a few spots left for the GRC Ecological & Evolutionary Genomics meeting in Tuscany this summer (July 13-18). Lots of great speakers already lined up, and we'd love to hear from you! www.grc.org/ecological-a...

The University of Washington has stopped processing all NSF grants on or after May 5th due to the uncertainty of the new 15% indirect rate. This is devastating, especially for junior faculty and early-career researchers. How many other universities will follow suite?

Illumina adding 5% surcharge on consumables in the US due to tariffs. 🫠🧪
