From Forest to fields and back to Forest: a bit of woodland in South Kerry. Inspired by and dedicated to Eoghan Daltun who’s done so much to raise awareness of the importance of woodland in Ireland.

This episode of Untold Earth on PBS Terra explores the seeming impossibilities behind our planet’s strangest, most unique natural wonders. This is not a forest but a single tree.

The wonder of trees. A mystical invocation of a tropical island on a February birch stem.

🧵 1/2 The fishing Wren - who knew? I'm playing in slomo so it's easier to see what's going on. In fact the Wren is catching amphipods (happy to be corrected on species). This shows the value of a weedy pond & providing access to it by placing branches over the surface. @bto-gbw.bsky.social

King Scallops Pecten, maximus numbers increased by 353% between 2010 & 2022 in the Lamlash No Take Zone. The recovering complexity of the seabed now gives ideal habitat to Juvenile Cod, Gadus morhua

An Imbolg gift yesterday: I placed my hand on a dead birch stem which fell apart to reveal this gorgeous grub. Dead wood can be good wood.

And the timber from the Leylandii travelled all of five metres to become the cladding for the rebuilt extension. And a kitchen table.

One of the first things we did was to cut down a few trees. A row of Leylandii planted beside the house. Lovely timber and fine trees in their way, they had no place there. They also provided timber for our rebuild of the farmhouse extension.

We fell into this place five years ago and this is one of the first pictures we took. Then, as now, we were intoxicated with the abundance of it all.
