Next Wednesday - in-person and livestream:

Had some friends over last night, and their toddler asked if she could play with the Little Red Riding Hood soft toy - which was puzzling as we don't have one... This is what she meant:

Who would have thought that 'White House Down' and 'Olympus Has Fallen' were deeply prescient predictions of the future...?

'Republicans led by a king' is a line from an Alanis Morissette-song...

I used to love it when I could draw comparisons to current events in my teaching, but these days, I have to ask my students to actively ignore what is going on in the US since it is in so many ways unprecedented...

Your daily reminder that there's no such thing as too many maps when you're reconstructing a massacre... Happy Valentine's btw!

I keep being torn between 'We're so far through the looking glass that history is not longer useful' and 'A critical historical perspective has never been more important'...😑

This is so close to the stated justification for Indian Removal--that it would be better for the Cherokees and others Natives to be moved West of the Mississippi--although not even Andrew Jackson stooped to calling the "Trail of Tears" majestic.

As all Scandinavians know, cavities are actually the work of two little trolls called Karius and Baktus...

Artwork from an Ottoman book depicting a tooth infection. Apparently the pain comes either from demons or a guy mansplaining something. This seems fair

Actual footage of DOGE-staff trying to get access to federal payment system...

The cover of this 1967-edition of Graham Greene's 'The Quiet American' goes hard...

Deport and Cry...

This is the second in a series of threads about Jeff Fynn-Paul’s book NOT STOLEN. The first thread focused on chapter 13, “Was America Stolen?” Amazingly, F-P actually winds up answering this question with a YES. twitter.com/Jeff__Ostler...

Tbh, I welcome the honesty of the new Trumpvirate, which is openly and proudly embracing it's fascist core - the President won't even have to pretend that there are 'good people on both sides' any more. But that only makes the brazen denial of reality by craven enablers so much more galling...

Even when Musk himself confirms that it was indeed a Nazi salute, the American press is still going to be like 'meaning behind obscure gesture remains unknown'...

Godspeed, folks...

Kim Wagner’s new book, “Massacre in the Clouds,” argues that the 1906 massacre at Bud Dajo established a template for future American war crimes: gross abuse leading to a cursory investigation, a coverup, impunity, and, finally, erasure. Read Sheila Coronel’s review:

The US has always struggled coming to terms with its own imperialism and the violence that is a fundamental part of that history. I wrote a book about it: www.amazon.com/Massacre-Clo...

Why not throw in some cheap beads, mirrors and small-pox infested blankets now that you're at it?

Make Manifest Destiny Again...

Just wait till they find out it's not actually green...

Stares in historian...😑

Where are all the historians of US empire to provide some much-needed context when we really need it? 🤷‍♂️

New history teacher memes just dropped...

The Wounded Knee Massacre occurred 134 years ago (December 29, 1890), on the Pine Ridge Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. Here are five, relatively recent works of excellent scholarship on that tragic event. #BookSky 💙📚

Stares in historian... What wilfully ignorant k*ck is this?

“You’ll be visited by three spirits.” The three spirits:
