Rest in Peace to one of the greatest of all time -- Gene Hackman -- a genius who could do it all. There will never be another.

Happy 92nd Birthday to the great Kim Novak 💗

Preston Sturges’ uproariously funny comedy SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS (1941), screens in 35mm this Saturday & Sunday, February 15th & 16th, at 2:00pm.

Huge JACKIE BROWN fan. As well as the Elmore Leonard source novel, RUM PUNCH. But this is the first time I’m seeing it on the big screen, in 35mm no less, from Tarantino’s own print, at the @newbeverly.bsky.social!

New From Us: Fifty Years Ago - Antonioni's The Passenger: midcenturycinema.org/2025/02/10/5... [NB - Jack Nicholson was so pleased with his work in this one that he personally secured the rights to it.]

A Frank Capra double bill in 35mm! BROADWAY BILL (1934) & PLATINUM BLONDE (1931) screen next Tuesday & Wednesday, February 4th & 5th.

I'd like to talk about my deep love for Marianne Faithfull the artist. I bought her Greatest Hits in 1990, and it’s incredible. Her voice in the 1960s was honeyed and pure, right through “Sister Morphine” which closes the album and IMO outdoes the Stones (and I’m a big Stones fan).

Rest in Peace, Marianne Faithfull

FRANKENSTEIN, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro. Starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz. November 2025. #NextOnNetflix

I sometimes thinking about this Canon ad with Godzilla at a copy machine when I’m feeling sad

February is a feast of film in glorious 35mm at the New Bev! Frank Capra rarities, Jean Arthur screwball comedies, films by Peter Bogdanovich, ‘80s creature features, the LA premiere of The Dead Thing, rare I.B. Technicolor prints, & more! Let us know what you’re most excited to see!

Stoked to see PW hit The Golden Hour (“a potent blend of personal history and cultural critique”) with the ✨starred review this morning. 🍾🙏🏻 www.publishersweekly.com/9780063008335

RIP Jules Feiffer. Satirist, comics historian, cartoonist, writer, editor. Loved his Popeye screenplay and his book “The Great Comic Book Heroes”, both of which were seminal for me growing up.

Rest well, Garth www.thestar.com/entertainmen...

Very happy to have my article, "Starring Ida Lupino," featured in the Criterion Current Spotlight. Here's a very sparkly young Ida photographed by Eugene Robert Richee in 1934. www.criterion.com/current/post...

NICKEL BOYS is now out in NY/LA. In my opinion, it’s the best film of the year and a total masterpiece. My review via @ebertvoices.bsky.social

Recommend this underrated Arthur Penn neo-noir. It has a notorious line from Gene Hackman’s PI Harry Moseby: “I saw a Rohmer film once. It was kinda like watching paint dry." Hackman is superb & it has a post-Watergate despairing tone. The final shot perfectly encapsulates the ambiguity.
