I do programming, and languages, but I’m a bit of a sponge for random knowledge, so I know a little bit about a lot more than just those two things.

Bauerlein in the NYTimes argues that NEH should focus more on (quoting Trump) “the poetry of Walt Whitman, the stories of Mark Twain, the songs of Irving Berlin, the voice of Ella Fitzgerald." It took me 3 minutes on the NEH website to find: * 106 NEH grants supporting work about Walt Whitman +

When the government is led by Nazis and Klansmen.

“The administration intends to make significant cuts to education, grants, research and climate-related programs in NOAA, the plan says, which the administration believes “are misaligned with the … expressed will of the American people.”” www.cnn.com/2025/04/11/c...

My Slate piece on the widespread NEH grant cancellations is live. So much gratitude to everyone who took the time to talk with me these past few days while fighting fires on every side. #humanities #highered #neh slate.com/news-and-pol...

In any functioning democracy the elimination of an extant department that protects children from lead poisoning would be a game ender for the entire administration under which it occurred. I’ll expect a strong statement from Chuck Schumer and some fundraising texts.

guarantee they're going after foreign students because they're a fucking easy quota point, just like going after immigrants who have been keeping all their appointments with the government 'we're deporting criminals' was always a fucking lie

One man in CECOT "doesn’t even know that his child’s been born," his lawyer said. Another has muscular dystrophy affecting his right arm, per a court filing. The facts fit "every definition of an enforced disappearance under international law," an attorney told me. www.huffpost.com/entry/cecot-...

wtf

Scam emails contain errors so that people who are smart enough to spot the same self-select out of further contact. One is never intending to hook those people. These emails are a carpet bomb getting people on humanitarian parole to self-deport. There's no teeth behind this; all bark.

no lies detected. #civilrights

I once saw a guy get fired at a pizza place I worked at for giving a customer 8 breadsticks instead of 6, and it actually fucked up his life pretty badly. And yet these guys can just light enormous piles of money on fire and they’re still the most powerful and influential people on the planet 🥴

I spoke to another person this week—also a US-born citizen—who showed me the DHS email she received informing her that she had to leave the country. Incompetent, evil or both?

An Australian man with a US work visa was detained upon reentry, called a “retard” and told, “Trump is back in town; we’re doing things the way we should have always been doing them.” He was held with 100 people including many Canadians. Posters celebrating equity had DEI scribbled out in marker.

I spent a decade studying kids' help-seeking. So, I can tell you that if a child asks their teacher to call them something other than what's on file, it's because that child fundamentally trusts that teacher. And, I'm appalled that a teacher would be fired for inspiring that kind of trust.

Good of time as any to start this

The agency forecasts weather, manages fisheries, and researches the world's oceans, atmosphere, and climate. The proposed budget cuts would slash the climate work entirely.

“The Trump administration has ordered State Department employees to report on any instances of coworkers displaying ‘anti-Christian bias’ as part of its effort to implement a sweeping new order on supporting employees of Christian faith.”

Donald Trump is illegally sending people to a prison in El Salvador; unilaterally withdrawing visas for students, sometimes for First Amendment-related reasons; and assigning the military “missions” on the border … among many other steps. If this framing leads to another chart, I’m going to go mad.

I will surely come up with something thoughtful to say about the proposal to cut NASA's science budget in half, and especially one that reminds everyone that the cosmos is worth our curiosity and NASA explores it quite cheaply but also, FUCK FUCK FUCK, that's a major cut to climate change science 🧪

Talk about painting a target!

Update: DOJ has missed its 11:30 a.m. deadline.

Chilling

I get that you are frustrated at the Trump administration. They're doing awful shit. But I have gone through about a thousand times how pointless and harmful it is to presume they won't comply with court orders. NO! If they don't, they must be held accountable, but don't give in preemptively.

Always fun to have a bunch of viral posts about court orders so more people can tell me that court orders are meaningless, not knowing they’ve uttered the magic words.

Our NOAA probationary feds were re-fired today. Taken off administrative leave, no salary, no health care. I feel increasingly powerless.

I keep thinking about how women are most at risk of being murdered by abusive men after they've decided to leave the relationship and it's not exactly a subtle comparison to what's being done to the USA at the moment

Science does not work like this. The only way you can set a timeline is if you have rigged the results in advance.

Of all the reasons I didn't change my name when I married, I never thought it would be because I would want to use my birth certificate to vote and my name would have to match exactly.

One of the core reasons people believe autism must have 'a cause', is because autism used to be detected quite late, and even now some children are not diagnosed with autism until school age. So to the parent, the appearance of autism in a child often presents from their observation ...
