It's no coincidence that Musk's companies are soaring in value as the regulatory agencies that were investigating or suing them are being gutted. The DOGE agenda isn't about "efficiency" — it's about Musk freeing himself from any accountability so he can line his pockets.

If we want democracy to win, we have to run the authoritarian playbook in reverse. That means building up power in all the competing places that authoritarians see as obstacles to conquer or neutralize. Here's how:

“The costs of dismantling agencies, dramatically politicizing state capacity, and demeaning the idea of public service will still be counted long after Trump has departed the scene,” Donald Moynihan writes:

Musk’s cost-cutting team is eliminating jobs at the vehicle safety agency that oversees Tesla and has launched investigations into deadly crashes involving his company’s cars. apnews.com/article/musk...

Merz is stating the obvious. We need to conduct the discussions on how to defend Germany without US security guarantees without any Denkverbote and the usual „Das geht nicht“ spirit.

New: Trump’s investigation into the criminal cases brought against him and others during the Biden admin will be overseen by a group of “weaponization group” lawyers at DOJ who are beset by a tangle of possible conflicts @theguardian.com www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

DOGE’s accounting of its “savings” is riddled with sloppy mistakes. The five largest cuts that it listed on its website earlier this week were all incorrect — making the savings look far larger than they were in reality.

How it started. How it’s going

President Donald Trump on Thursday again raised the prospect of serving an unconstitutional third term, asking a crowd at a White House event whether he should run again. The Constitution’s 22nd Amendment limits presidents from holding the office more than twice.

It’s amazing to me that people still question whether or not Trump is a stooge for Putin.

With all due respect, Congressman, he’s not trying to distract from anything here. He’s a grandiose pathological narcissist. A narcissistic sociopath. A malignant narcissist. A psychopath. A megalomaniac. This is what he thinks of himself. And what he wants others to think of him.

We are steadily dismantling our defenses against foreign influence operations, to the clear detriment to America’s national security. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/b...

"It would behoove Democrats to wake up every day trying to think how to make Donald Trump less popular." That's @brianbeutler.bsky.social on today's pod. Check out our exchange on this. I think Trump is in some key ways in a weaker position than Bush in 2005. newrepublic.com/article/1917...

Pathetic apnews.com/article/nyc-...

“the United States is not a startup. The federal government exists to do all of the things that are definitionally not profitable, that serve the public good rather than protect investor profits. (The vast majority of startups also fail, something the United States cannot afford to do.)”

This is not about efficiency. Giving federal employees purchase cards saves money - it reduces layers of paperwork and red tape. Imagine running a business where you stopped employees from purchasing anything. The goal is to shut down government by other means.

They arrived at the United States border from around the world, hoping to seek asylum. Instead, they were detained, shackled and flown by the U.S. military to a faraway country, Panama. Our exclusive look at a new front in Pres. Trump’s immigration crackdown:

So everything is bad and it’s not a competition over what’s more bad, but this will be all kinds of bad, whether you want the Pentagon budget to go down, up, or stay the same. Add in civil-mil dynamics and…very bad. www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

Pathetic

Good men & women in EUCOM are—as they've done every month since Feb 2022—actively helping track & repel this aerial assault. Meanwhile their commander-in-chief at home is actively attacking Ukraine's president, while handing concession after concession to the state firing the missiles.

Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Joni Ernst, etc: You’ve seen Hegseth, RFK Jr, and others give worthless assurances. You’re now seeing the US appease Putin, and DOJ guardrails crumble. Are you going to let Kash Patel use the FBI against his enemies list and further destroy the rule of law?

American Peronism

Congrats, America. We're now on Putin's side.

“Politicization erodes both state capacity and performance. For example, a cross-national review of 52 countries found that non-politicized, merit-based hiring and tenure protections were associated with higher performance and lower corruption.”

Trump, the most thin-skinned man in politics, goes full on for Zelenskyy.

Martin says he's investigating a "threat" from Schumer that's iconic in RW circles. Schumer got over his skis at a 2020 rally and said conservative SCOTUS justices "won’t know what hit you" if they dismantle abortion rights. He apologized for the bad line. But Rs insist it was a violent threat.

Congrats to all the pundits who repeatedly vomited on TV about how "Trump *believes* the investigations are hoaxes" when he obviously understood them as the downstream consequences of his premeditated criminality. Trump: He who saves his Country does not violate any Law www.cnn.com/2025/02/16/p...
