Last decade of Japanese National Railways (1975-1987) amazingly in a rapidly urbanising country with oodles of investment, they managed to lose passengers with poor service. And the private railways had more riders too!

Olaf Scholz mocked British railways over “broken tracks and bad trains”, claiming that "nothing works any more” in the UK. Turns out: Germany rail problems have become so bad that Deutsche Bahn long-distance service is less punctual than even the worst operator in Britain. www.ft.com/content/d3b6...

One marker of the modernization of rail is the evolution of station design. Although most stations have existed since the 19th century, their layout and functionality have evolved through discrete improvements. This diagram shows an idealized evolution of a minor Italian station along a trunk line.
