Happy Tapir Day from some baby tapirs. Who is your favorite? #kidlit #tapir

Our local history museum has this painting of "Tinkle" in their collection but I have NEVER seen it on display. Always in storage. They open for the season May 9th and we're very anxious to see if it's out this year. Unknown artist, 1883. shelburnemuseum.org/online-exhib...

The Naval Academy cancelled a freakin' Ken Burns documentary showing, not because of the content, but because Burns had been critical of Trump www.nytimes.com/2025/04/24/u...

To quiet her mind before trying to go to sleep, my 10-year-old has been drawing a pile of cats--adding one new cat every night. ❤️🐈‍⬛️🐈

I found an extensive band history of the Replacements that was translated from Italian, and it's an invigorating read if only because the author and/or the translator use novel words and phrases I haven't seen before in this well-trod sub-sub-subgenre.

We decided to watch “School of Rock” last night because it has “Minecraft Steve in it” (I know…It is what it is) and I decided to google a bit and, yall, the little singer girl just got married to the big security guard boy /in real life/. She’s a OBGYN sonographer and he’s a music industry lawyer.

Has anyone ever said "My rights are a distraction?" It's always someone else's rights, right?

One of the most shocking things I have read for a while: t.co/lg46ijHLDF

Largely due to an upcoming podcast in which I participated, I've been thinking a lot over the last couple weeks about rhymes--and the lack thereof--in song lyrics. I'm wondering if folks have favorite examples, either for good or ill, of songwriters approaching the matter of when and how to rhyme.

When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles. Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.

My PhD student's NSF grant was terminated today. Her dissertation investigates why air pollution monitoring, metrics, and regulations don't properly capture the harms experienced by marginalized communities--esp in the most polluted Detroit neighborhoods. She and I are happy to talk with press etc.

It is difficult for me to convey how profoundly unsurprised I was reading this article, which is about the world's richest and most famous entrepreneur threatening to deport his employees for pointing out a potentially fatal safety issue with his car company's brakes futurism.com/tesla-engine...

Editor creates an AI executive who is "an expert at building and scaling digital media companies." Decides within minutes that the AI is "one of the most knowledgeable and energetic colleagues" he's ever had. Asks the AI to create a headshot of itself. It does. He sexually harasses it immediately.

Actually. How the US benefitted from outsourcing its research interests to experts in universities.

The vet said 〝He's not overweight at all, but he has a round and big head.‘’

Is Kilmar Abrego Garcia alive? Because the amount of resistance to addressing his being trafficked gives the distinct impression that either he is dead or what they have done to him is so unspeakable that they cannot afford for him to be freed, seen, or spoken with.

The Moms for Liberty campaign of hate started with a lie. It was echoed in right wing media and financed by right-wing national groups. Then Deerfield fought back. www.assignedmedia.org/breaking-new...

I can't emphasize enough that the most important thing journalists can do right now is publish exactly this kind of article

Didn’t get a chance to post this earlier, but there was a huge turnout in support of Kilmar Abrego Garcia at the federal courthouse. From my seat in the jury room, I heard the supporters outside chanting throughout the hearing.

On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked, "If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?" Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

Someone once said NextDoor is the social network for dogs if they could type. It’s always “what’s that noise?” and “who’s that stranger?” which is exactly what I imagine my dogs would text other neighborhood dogs.

I will keep posting about this because I want people to know it continues, and it is a lot more than the individual cases we see in the news. >1000 students at 170+ universities across 43 states now. Thank you @insidehighered.com and @amowreader.com www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

LE MONDE asked me to write an article about American literature in the age of Trump, but then decided it didn't like what I wrote. Oh well. Here it is in LitHub: "Most American literature is the literature of empire."

Again: it is supposed to be commonly accepted non partisan morality that “id rather let a hundred guilty men go free than imprison one who was innocent” but this administration and its party are gleefully inverting that premise and then some

“Trump administration overrode Social Security staff to list immigrants as dead” A senior exec who objected was “marched out of his office” and put on leave. @WashingtonPost.com scoops wapo.st/3RKSQQt

Some personal news: the Department of Homeland Security has given me, an immigration lawyer born in Newton, Massachusetts, seven days to leave the U.S. Does anyone know if you can get Italian citizenship through great-grandparents?

This is chilling. It is how you destroy America, but also how you destroy respect for religion in America. The wall separating church and state is designed to protect both, after all. www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

Two of my favorite Chicago institutions (@chirpradio.org and @musicboxtheatre.bsky.social) have joined together for this year's CHIRP Music Film Festival. Check out the line up and buy tickets here: musicboxtheatre.com/series-and-f...

Welp, got an answer to this question: Apparently the answer is no tariffs are being collected. Trump broke the system www.cnbc.com/2025/04/11/c...

The NEH Digital Humanities office housed people doing amazing work and connecting and supporting DH ecosystems in ways many of will never be able to chart or fully appreciate. Is there a way we can honor them at the ASA or MLA or AHA or. . .

I just saw a rabbit on the lawn in front of Cambridge city hall. I was like, aww, a rabbit. And then I saw a second rabbit and was like oh wow, another rabbit. Then I saw a third one and started to get a little nervous. Then, I kid you not, I saw a fourth rabbit and I got the hell out of there.

“We need to get better at treating this like a business,” Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said, explaining he wants to see a deportation process “like (Amazon) Prime, but with human beings.”

JFC! There aren’t enough 🤯 emoji in the world for this 💩. The POTUS thinks those kindly Nazi death camp guards were on hand to be helpful & feed the hungry. Always service with a smile, right? The comments were from his presser with Netanyahu. #DemVoice1

I happen to know that some powerful media orgs were unhappy that AP filed suit; they thought the conflict with the White House would blow over on its own and that AP risked making bad law. The AP's leadership deserves a lot of credit for having proceeded as it did. apnews.com/article/trum...

We’ll be marching to the ICE field office in downtown LA on Saturday to demand the return of our students’ visas at 3pm, following the AOC/Bernie rally. I’ll be tabling at the rally, in case you want to say hi. All extremely welcome, including students and member of the public.

being a game dev is knowing sometimes 10/10 is too much but 11/10 is just right

Big yawn energy to get through Monday! 💤 Our growing tapir calf, Ume, is now 103 pounds. She will remain behind the scenes, bonding with her mom, Yuna, until later this spring. 🌸
