Imagine if a wealthy benefactor wanted to establish a Species Discovery Institute. For just $4k a month, you could feed a taxonomist AND give them time to describe new species…

I just had my first interview about a species I published and they asked “what’s it like to discover a new species?!” And I was like well it happens pretty much every day that I do IDs, I have about 300 of them in my refrigerator right now.

This is revolting. NSF has lost its legitimacy as an institution.

Not the most important thing here, but Omnicom and Interpublic sound like the names of the evil companies in an 80s Robocop ripoff.

People leave academic jobs to be program officers at NSF and other agencies. Many programs have trouble recruiting for these permanent positions. The damage this will do to US science will be long lasting. #academicsky
