1/ The phrase “ #Doyourownresearch” has become one of the most polarizing phrases in public health, exposing deep divides in how people approach health info and trust experts. YLE contributor @kmpanthagani.bsky.social breaks it down in her most recent health (mis)communication post 🧵

Stellar piece by @kmpanthagani.bsky.social exploring why non-experts "do their own research" & the epistemic pitfalls that await them. An astute observation: assuming "real" truth always opposes the consensus *creates* bias & enables misinfo. yourlocalepidemiologist.substack.com/p/how-should...

1/ There’s a growing movement quietly undermining one of the most established scientific ideas: #germtheory —the fact that viruses and bacteria cause disease. YLE contributor @kmpanthagani.bsky.social breaks it down in her most recent health (mis)communication post -- let's talk about it 🧵

Prevention >>>> treatment. That's the beauty of vaccines. An animated, reimagined version of WSJ's measles visualization:

As Francis Collins recently said, when you mix politics and science, you just get politics. If you want to understand why half the country lost trust in public health during the pandemic, this is a big part of it. 👇👇 www.youcanknowthings.com/science-poli...

An excellent article by @matthewfacciani.bsky.social on what steps we can take to start rebuilding trust in science. Quick notes: 1. Be a human (competency and warmth both matter) 2. Say "I don't know" 3. Show up irl (when possible) 4. Own mistakes when they happen substack.com/home/post/p-...

Yes, this! Great piece by @kmpanthagani.bsky.social Shaming & blaming others is an ineffective way to educate & promote good public health. Listening & offering empathy with information can work.

Kindness works better than criticism.

After 21 years at my dream job, I’m very sad to announce my early retirement from the National Institutes of Health. My life’s work has been to scientifically study how our food environment affects what we eat, and how what we eat affects our physiology.

A look back at what vaccines have done.

This is good. One really wants to believe that, by eating, sleeping, and exercising in the right way, one can fight off any infection. At least, *I* used to want to believe that. Unfortunately it's not true!

It’s been said that RFK Jr doesn’t believe in germs, but that’s not true. In his book, he lays out a more insidious form of germ theory denial that is more subtle, more popular, and more dangerous, and explains his approach to the measles outbreak. Read more here: open.substack.com/pub/youcankn...

Survey data shows that 1/3 of Americans believe COVID-19 vaccines have caused thousands of sudden deaths. However, a new study found no increase in sudden cardiac deaths in young U.S. athletes after COVID-19 or vaccines, aligning with other research. youcanknowthings.substack.com/p/1-in-3-ame...

You're likely to hear a lot about vitamin A for measles. Some key things to know: 1. For severe measles, especially for kids *deficient* in vitamin A, giving vitamin A can help them fight the infection. 2. Most US kids aren't deficient in vitamin A (though levels can fall during infection).

Missing the days where we didn't have three weeks worth of news cycles in 2 hours.

The reason I've put so much effort into clearly explaining death rates by age is that, for NZ, having a lower death rate than before covid is such powerful evidence we didn't have thousands of sudden deaths (it didn't stop antivaxers making such claims like in the US, but evidence for normal people)

One in three Americans believes COVID vaccines have caused thousands of sudden deaths in otherwise healthy people. One in three. www.youcanknowthings.com/1-in-3-ameri...
