My lab has done studies showing that sex biased host responses determine disease outcome during Ebola virus, MERS-CoV, & SARS-CoV-2 infection across species. Sex is a biological variable. Failure to account for that in viral pathogenesis experiments is just bad science.

People forget the horrors of infectious disease. I am just old enough to have gotten the smallpox vaccine, and to remember measles outbreaks and quarantines. I remember classmates who caught mumps. I had friends who died from AIDS. Vaccines were the biggest human achievement of the 20th century.
