The older I get, the more I appreciate the concept of "IQ." Whenever someone seriously mentions the importance of IQ, I know I can shut my brain off because nothing they say is worth thinking about. It's so convenient!

On this list: Spokane Not on this list: Seattle

It was an honor to be invited by @markoliias.bsky.social to speak to the WA Senate Transportation Commitee about our call for a Megaproject for Safety. We need the same commitment we bring to freight & floating bridges to our busiest and most dangerous roadways

@kromandavid.bsky.social have you heard anything over the last several years about Beacon Place? Does Seattle Parks have a plan for it? I know the coffers are not overflowing, but it's not in any real sense operating as a park. And I bet the fence rental adds up! imagine.seattle.gov/parks/allpar...

We can get off the rhetorical carousel framing Seattle's future as either housing or trees by pivoting to vocal support for planting 10s of thousands of new trees on public lands in rights of way, schools, and parks. City Council could provide a greener future by leaning into public trees.

Did you know that WA's new Dem governor Bob Ferguson convened a "Budget and Government Efficiency" group during his transition, co-chaired by the head of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce and a former right-wing Dem State Senator? And that they predictably called for austerity? Well, now you know!

I just voted NO to advance Senate Republican's pro-billionaire, anti-middle class budget blueprint. They want to let Elon cut $1 trillion this year alone—those cuts are coming out of SNAP, Medicaid, VA benefits, & more. Money out of YOUR pocket so BILLIONAIRES get more tax breaks.

I saw plenty of “everyday Seattleites” at the events OPCD held about the comp plan all last year. Why are their points of view not as valuable to tbe council? Maybe CMs need to spend more time with everyday Seattleites instead of just folks who have convenient monthly meetings for Electeds

I think it’s one half block?

In Washington last year, a traffic crash killed or seriously injured someone every 2.7 hours, but I've never seen a TV news station claim that even a single horrific crash "highlights the dangers" of roadway travel.

"You can't make this stuff up," Rob Saka says of the fact that there was a shooting on a Metro bus last night, in Tukwila, ahead of this meeting. Saka has not commented on three people who have been killed while walking in Seattle so far this year, including one in his own council district.

1/ Dear everyone who just went grocery shopping and saw this, There’s a person in government who could flick his pen and investigate what the hell is going on with eggs. No, not your congressman. His name is Andrew Ferguson. He’s the new head of the @FTC. Has he done that? No

Will pedestrian gates solve this

Today's sound transit disruption was brought to you by a dangerous driver using MLK way the way Bruce Harrell intends them to be used. Dangerously fast and out of control.

Dang I wonder which presidential adviser has a business that relies on minerals

After serving as a leader on the Sound Transit Board of Directors for 15 years, Dow Constantine was revealed this week as seeking the job as the agency's CEO. Some transit advocates remain skeptical. Story: www.theurbanist.org/2025/02/15/d...

Canada's 4 Nations jerseys/sweaters are so much cooler than ours.

Great to WA's TOD bill, HB 1491, passed out of committee with a gamechanging amendment that creates a new 20-year property tax exemption for station area projects that provide 10% of homes at 60% AMI or 20% at 80% AMI. Thank you @staterepjuliareed.bsky.social! app.leg.wa.gov/committeesch...

I don't want to minimize Seattle's tree canopy loss during development, but it is a fraction of a percent of our total tree canopy. Surely we can more than offset the less than 0.25% tree canopy loss with new public trees!!!! (from the One Seattle FEIS, pg. 3.3-15)

Remember those technologists I hired using an authority designed to bring private sector tech talent to gov, legally? They were looking into big tech. Trump just fired them. All of them. consumerfinance.gov/about-us/blog/…

ChatGPT is now more than two years old. If this really is the transformative technology of our age, shouldn’t we have seen more use cases by now? The mass displacement of human workers? Or even actual profits for AI companies? sciencebusiness.net/viewpoint/ai...

Can never forget how much of what we’re going to see in the next four years was road-tested and normalized by the last four years.

Are we doing "Muskovites"? It's not nearly mean enough but it's there for the taking

Notably absent from the crowded transit security roundtable scheduled in Rob Saka's transportation committee next week is anyone from the County Council. You know, the legislative body with direct oversight of Metro.

An important tell that DOGE is more about a power grab than government efficiency is that it is rapidly dismantling the parts of the federal government that have the most technology expertise and have done the most to improve its software development and procurement. www.wired.com/story/doge-t...

Mister Harrell, tear down this wall!! For those that don’t know, the park renovations are complete but the historical commission won’t let them open it

Thought this piece by Tressie McMillan Cottom was clear and astute (🎁): www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/o...

Also, no it can’t.

The Link light rail is currently single tracking through the Rainier Valley because a driver hit the train. Unliking addressing pedestrian behavior with gates, there is no plan to even begin to think about addressing driver behavior on MLK.

Thinking for no reason about how really large protest movements have so often coincided with higher-than-usual unemployment and what that says about the utility of work in maintaining political rule
