Anyone who internalizes this line of bullshit will absolutely always be outflanked by people who know how to actually do things

🌸 Ravens in bloom

In the April episode of my podcast, we interviewed science writer Heather Pringle, author of The Northwomen: Untold Stories of the Other Half of the Viking World. We talked about so many different facets of the lives of Viking women. It was a fantastic discussion! linktr.ee/womenoftheno...

I don't have a picture but the estimate is that 15,000 showed up in Tucson today. I was there and people were lined up for over a mile!

😂😭

Yes, it does, Chuck. Yes, it does.

Stop stealing the hard work of writers, Meta! I've spent years researching and writing my novels and short stories. It's not yours to take without compensation. Do the right thing and stop stealing our work to train your AI. #MetaBookThieves

One day, I want to go to Sweden and do a tour of runestones and stone circles.

Of course this database is Russian and Meta is all in. No, AI sealing our work is NOT OK. 🤬 "LibGen, a pirated book database originating in Russia that Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Whatsapp) are using to train their flagship AI model, Llama 3."

"If your book was used by Meta, you’re automatically included in the Kadrey v. Meta class action in Northern California without needing to take any immediate action."

Meta has been stealing intellectual property to train their AI. I know a lot of authors whose works were pirated. 😡 If you're an author or writer, you might want to check the list to see if you're on it.

I'm proud of my town. ✊

The thing about so-called generative artificial intelligence is, the intelligence isn't artificial. It's real. It's OURS. The techbros stole our intelligence (our data, our thoughts, our stories, our art) and used the software to regurgitate it and spackle it together into digital particleboard.

13 is unlucky for some, but I consider myself lucky to have my 13th guest on #ValhallaConversations #podcast be @vikingverse.bsky.social aka Ian Stuart Sharpe. His imagination is as wide as the Ginunngagap! 📺Watch on YouTube or 🎧Listen on Spotify youtu.be/JoJ44r_hEuo?...

Three-sided filigree-ornamented gold foil from the lid of a box brooch, human-like figure with a face and a winding body, part of a treasure find from Malmsmyr, Rone Parish, Gotland. #vikingsky #medievalsky

Thanks, Pamela for inviting us onto your blog for Women's History Month!

Anthropomorphic silver pendant from Birka, Sweden. 9th or 10th century, ca 2 cm high. #vikingsky #medievalsky #vikings

In this month's episode, my cohost and I interviewed Niina Niskanen, a Finnish artist, writer, and folklorist. We talked about Sami culture, myths, and legends. It was a fascinating discussion! linktr.ee/womenoftheno...

The Tissø Ring, a 10th c. golden ornamental ring from a potential cultic place - animal bones, fragments of drinking glasses found in the great hall, offerings of silver objects, coins, jewellery and tools found buried on the hill, place name itself (Tyr's lake) #vikings #vikinghistory #medievalsky

The modern reconstruction of the Iron and Viking age hall of Lejre (Den) #vikings #vikingage #vikingsky #medievalsky

A reminder for these times.

Over 1000 people showed up. #teslatakedown

A little cuteness break.

I had a great time discussing the Netflix show Twilight of the Gods on the Valhalla Conversations podcast!

The destruction is the point.

This video kicks ass: youtu.be/o2jzKo1RqWU?...

Some further thoughts at Ye Olde Blogge as to why you have to talk about your art, and why sharing it is not trivial:

The latest episode of my podcast is out. In this one, Johanna and I talk to Nancy Marie Brown, author of several books about Vikings, including The Far Traveler: Voyages of a Viking Woman. linktr.ee/womenoftheno...

OpenAI right now.

Now that Episode 11 featuring @joshuagillingham.bsky.social , the first of 2025 content, is out you may be wondering who is next in #ValhallaConversations #podcast. Well Episode 12 (Feb) is @profcarolyne.bsky.social @ksbarton.bsky.social & Sacha from SRG discussing #TwilightOfTheGods On #Netflix.

This month, Johanna and I have an informal chat about everything! We discuss how we are both “discovery” writers, our travels, what we’ve been working on, interesting research we’ve done. We talk about Vikings, like the Birka garrison and Vikings who traveled east. It was a lively discussion.

A very cool (pun intended) picture of Skadi! She is one of my favorites of the Norse deities.

Thor by Johan Egerkrans (Sweden)

Though modern culture often depicts the Norse goddess Freyja as simply the goddess of love, a Nordic Venus, she was also a goddess of war and witchcraft. Norse witches wore catskin gloves in her honor, and Odin was said to have learned much of his magic from Freyja. 🎨Iren Horrors #FolkloreSunday

I feel this.

Happy Festivus! Let the airing of grievances commence!

"Sorry, we can't make this technology that sucks and nobody wants and that uses enough power to blow up the moon unless we *also* steal people's shit to throw into our content woodchipper in order to produce mediocre digital particleboard out of the cumulative artbarf." futurism.com/the-byte/ope...

Yep!

Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends: 1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration; 2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you; 3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

Nothing like a Norse whalebone plaque for smoothening out historic garb or serving up some heart-warming Viking Age food. This one dates to the 800s. It was found in the grave of a wealthy woman in Lilleberge, Norway and is now in the British Museum.

“What kind of books do you like?” “Yes.”

Happy Friday the 13th to all who observe.
