Beyond honored and proud to put the CUFA 2025 CFP together alongside the brilliant @drtmp.bsky.social, @kellyreneeallen.bsky.social, and @jjcarterford.bsky.social. Please share widely! Lets make the world together! ✊🏼

We’re creating a list of deals and special offers for District residents impacted by the recent federal layoffs — from discounted drinks to free headshots and career coaching. Help us build this community resource by adding to the list, here: airtable.com/appl7lWf605d...

If you're in the DC area, stop by @peoplesbooktakoma.com. It's a bright, cheerful store w/ an amazing selection of (especially non-fiction!) books (and zines!) & incredibly kind, helpful folks. I stopped by post haircut today and found this book on Lefebvre's theories of social space & the urban. 🙌🏼

In all seriousness, I just keep waiting for them to threaten to deny federal student loans to anyone attending a school/program that teaches “DEI.”

this that grey poupon that evian that ted talk

Check this out y’all! I got to witness @k-till.bsky.social present some of this work over the summer and it was 🔥

Such a treat to attend @curlyprofessor.bsky.social’s talk on her new book “Carceral Apartheid” at Politics and Prose this afternoon. I appreciate her ending on an “invitation to awakening.” Anyone interested in prisons and PIC abolition should absolutely check it out.

I read this in June 2023 when I was feeling pretty despondent. Smoke from wildfires in Canada had reached DC, air quality was dangerous, & everyone seemed to react like “welp that’s just how it’s gonna be now.” It absolutely invigorated & re-focused me on radical hope & resistance ✊🏻 10/10 recommend.

"Maybe this terrible thing that has befallen this country, this descent into fascism and oligarchy invites us to a more honest confrontation with the truth about the state of our democracy. Dr. King warned us. He feared that Black Americans were seeking to 'integrate into a burning house.'"

“Liberation is not selective, and justice does not stop at the border…. together we protect each other and build safety and solidarity.” ✊🏻#PeoplesMarch

Grateful that @davidkaib.bsky.social picked @city.bsky.social & Leonardo Vilchis book Abolish Rent for the next book club. Learning from LA tenant organizers & housing justice feels especially relevant and necessary in the context of the wildfires. Looking forward to discussing! #BusReads on the G2.

Something I wish I was seeing some more coverage/awareness of: these maps show the density of Black owner-occupied households in LA. In the first one Altadena is in the upper right. The second map overlays the Eaton Fire perimeter, showing how it devastated much of this historic community.

Hundreds of incarcerated firefighters are fighting the wildfires raging across southern California for $5.80-$10.24 per day When responding to disasters, they may earn $26.90 over a 24-hour shift

You're not imagining it - the politics behind school choice advocacy really have changed. The bipartisan, civil rights sales pitch is out. A *hyperpartisan* red state strategy that takes aim at GOP hold-outs is in. I wrote about it for my (free) newsletter open.substack.com/pub/educatio...

Snow day syllabus prep 🙌🏻 feat. @victorialaw.bsky.social @mfkantor.bsky.social @prisonculture.bsky.social @dreanyc123.bsky.social @mfkantor.bsky.social @mayaschenwar.bsky.social @ruha9.bsky.social and more!!

One of the greatest joys of parenting has been watching my son fall in love w/ reading. Today, we got lunch & read books together at a new coffee shop (La Coop in DC): @jeffkinney.bsky.social’s Wrecking Ball Wimpy Kids for him, Reiko Hillyer’s “A Wall is Just a Wall” @dukepress.bsky.social for me 🥰

SO pumped to teach a new class this spring called “Carceral logics, education, and abolition: Disrupting the school to prison nexus.” Reading up as I plan out my syllabus- considering some chapters from @elizabethkai.bsky.social’s book to offer key historical context/framing 🙌🏻

We raised $1,230 already! Thank you all! New goal: $2,000 Cashap: $RemoraHouseDC One time & recurring donations: givebutter.com/remorahouse Recurring donations really help us plan & expand! Help us keep unhoused folks a bit warmer in Washington DC this winter!

Around this time every year, I share a list of ways to support Native people. From supporting Indigenous people seeking abortion care to defending Native voting rights and keeping Native families together, here are some causes worth supporting. 🧵

400+ years after the "First Thanksgiving" most Americans have no idea that the Wampanoag people are still here. My tribe, the Aquinnah Wampanoag, is on Martha's Vineyard and we're still fighting for our land and rights. We’re also doing some cool stuff. 🧵👇 if you’d like to learn more & support us

NOT GREAT BOB

Anyone else on here headed to Boston for #CUFA2024? Looking forward to a (likely, hopefully 😂) invigorating, inspiring few days, especially Kellie Carter Jackson’s keynote.

As usual, Republicans do not object to "language policing," they object to terminology that represents greater societal acceptance of marginalized groups.

Bluesky academics, let’s get to know each other! Quote & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren’t working on but keep thinking about. 1. Youth resisting & influencing local edu policy decisions in DC 2. How abolitionist white parents talk to their kids abt police

Just started an interdisciplinary #QuantCrit starter pack for scholars advancing #CriticalRace #BlackFeminist #DuBoisian and other race centric Quantitative Methodologies Please reply if you or someone you know is missing from the list. #AcademicSky #Edusky #Econsky

Screams in DC resident 😱

I saw this just before Shabbat came in, and I've been thinking about it all day, because I think that while the event itself is lurid and enraging, *this* is the part we should pay close attention to. Oklahoma teachers are showing us that noncompliance works.

I've been reminding loved ones who are despondent that these rightwingers are NOT all powerful. It's OK to be scared but important not to allow that fear to distort reality. There are TENS OF MILLIONS of people who are not in support of what these people are planning to do. That’s BUILT IN.

Thanks to @grodriguezlemus.bsky.social for putting together these Education Scholars starter packs! go.bsky.app/BaXvoap

Can’t wait to read this!

Does anyone else pack wayyyyyy to many books for a weekend trip? My haul as I head to Chicago for a Hyrox race: Celeste Winston’s “How to Lose the Hounds,” @renee.bsky.social & Regina Mahone’s “Liberating Abortion,” and Sarah Lewis’s “The Unseen Truth.”

I would honestly be in alarm-raising mode about what we're going to be up against, but I think more immediately, people need to get right with where they're at psychologically. Bc if we don't do that, people aren't going to be ready for what the coming months/years will demand of us. From last week:
