These two buildings express the values of their place. The remarkable restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and the creation of The Bullitt Center in Seattle. Two very different but honest cultural expressions, both utterly inspirational.

Unlike the ephemeral world of digital creation, physical architecture cannot sustain illusions. Buildings don't lie - they can't afford to. The implications of this contrast are staggering. In a world of increasingly frictionless digital creation, architecture stands stubbornly, proudly physical.

It took me years of learning and teaching architecture to grasp its most powerful secret: buildings can't lie. The victors might write the histories, but architecture owes its existence to an inescapable truth-teller: cost. When real money is at stake, pretense falls away.
