Students in Hyderabad have been trying to save a beloved, beleaguered forest against great odds, including industrial and government greed and bulldozers. m.economictimes.com/opinion/et-c...

Magdalena lived under an authoritarian dictatorship, so she knows.

Justin Robinson and I recorded “John Henry” because every time he and I and Dom Flemons played with Joe Thompson he would start by asking what we wanted to play – which was a rhetorical question because he would start with ‘John Henry’ every single time!

There’s an Icelandic way of saying of “I’m gonna kick your arse” that translates to “I will take you to the bakery.” A Hungarian version is “you’re prying open the lid of the slap-crate.” And the most colourful threat I’ve come across in Urdu… “my foot is in your butt’s destiny”

The student paper at the college at which I teach reports a "tsunami of takedown requests" from international students terrified of being targeted for innocuous, legitimate op-eds & opinions.. Many ask in person--leave no trace in writing. Reminds me of my father's account of studying in the USSR.

At the Assoc. for Asian American Studies conference in Boston, pls stop by the Nichi Bei Foundation table to talk about how you can connect "The Literature of Japanese American Incarceration" from @penguinclassicsusa.bsky.social with how the government is repeating that history in this moment.

Make sense of this mess: We’re shunning skilled immigrants —while dumbing down schools by banning books & defunding education. And the grand plan for the workplace is a bro-club of white men hoarding power. So when does “greatness” kick in? Because all I’m seeing is regression wrapped in a flag.

In person work meeting with cookies & apples for snacks. I appreciated the fact that the apples were Cosmic Crisps. People in the PNW have standards when it comes to apples. 😆

If Microsoft & Amazon executives didn’t want to pay a wealth tax in WA State maybe they shouldn’t have supported a kakistocracy destroying government support of critically-important programs like education, research & healthcare. Just sayin’

Spouse & I went to the Mary Rose Museum before the British Museum on a 2001 trip to England. The Mary Rose had fantastic displays with lots of cultural context & explanations. The British Museum had *brief* labels. We spent most of the British Museum visit wishing we were back at the Mary Rose.

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen is demanding a meeting with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele over the detention of Kilmar Abrego Garcia and says he’ll go to El Salvador himself if the Marylander isn’t returned.

Tix for the reading are only $15 "No-No Boy tells the story of Ichiro Yamada as he returns to Seattle after two years in a Japanese American internment camp and two years in prison for refusing conscription into the U.S. Army during World War II."

In Shropshire it was the tradition for farmers to leave off work as soon as they heard the first cuckoo of spring. This sometimes fell around 14th of April. The day involved merrymaking and drinking, especially 'Cuckoo Ale' It was a great day for the community. #Shropshire #Spring #Folklore

Oh crap. I’m going to book events every night this week & just remembered light rail is basically not serving any of the downtown stations for a week & a half starting tomorrow.

I just remembered KEXP is doing their Six Degrees of Separation week where every song is somehow related to the one before it from 7 pm Fri. Apr 11 - 7:00 pm Fri. Apr 18

It’s been rainy on and off but the days when the sun has been out have been glorious!

There's a reason ICE agents wear masks in the street. From Kristi Noem's war-crime propaganda to the airport officers harassing innocent tourists, the MAGA deportation regime is not just immoral but increasingly criminal Someday, there must be justice. They have some pretty cool illusions at World of Illusions in #Dublin. This one’s a black and white photo with a coloured grid superimposed. You perceive the image in colour. (Zoom in to see the details.)

If this hamster was in Iraq his name would not be translated as Mister Saddlebags or Father of Tote (or even Pouch Papa). He would instead be known as “Bag Dad”

#PalmSunday • Sul y Blodau 🌸 In Wales, villages trimmed and adorned the graves of their dead relatives on Palm Sunday. The sides of the graves were raised up with fresh turf, and fresh earth was placed on the surface; the stones were whitewashed, and women planted rosemary and rue🌷 #Wales

It seems like the goal is to get rid of all knowledge in this country, so let's deal in this valuable commodity. I'll share this: Today I learned that Debussy's Le Mer symphony was inspired by Hokusai's Great Wave Off Kanagawa, which he had hanging in his house. open.spotify.com/album/0Zby80...

Started reading Laurie Halse Andersen’s YA novel, Fever 1793. I think if I taught middle school this would be a good book for students to read for catharsis over COVID. My experience with young adults is that they’re still pretty ruffled by COVID (worse if they lost someone).

I’ve reached an age where I’m learning that grief has different flavors when different loved ones are gone.

I couldn’t get the jasmine tea from the tea tasting at @fridaytea.com a few weeks ago out of my mind, so I’m back for more.

Kid is experimenting with recipes to recreate the H-Mart seasoned cucumbers at home & I'm happy to let him experiment on me.
