Saw my first juvenile Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) of the year yesterday. Not sure if it would be a hatch year bird. To be fledging in early June. the parents would have had to be sitting on the eggs in late February or very early March.. a bit too early #BirdingHungary #storks #waders #BigBirds

The cruise missile known as a Common Pochard (Aythya ferina). Man... they are fast in flight! ✈️ 😀 #BirdingHungary #birds #ducks #pochards #JustDucky

One more 4 #TernTuesday Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida). In the late 18th century, Pallas thought it was a hybrid Common X White-winged Tern... hence the strange specific epithet. The priority principle means 225 years later, the name sticks 🤪 #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #terns #birds

I didn't know there was such a thing as #TernTuesday but apparently there is. I'm not one to miss out on an alliterative hashtag 😄 so here's my contribution.... Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) Just couldn't get this sucker on a clean background. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #terns #birds

The heart-shaped pattern on a Shelduck's butt. Let's face it... ducks are built for love ❤️ 😄 #BirdingHungary #ducks #waterfowl #shelducks #amore

A nice Common Shelduck (Tadorna tadorna). More like a small goose than a duck. A bit unusual nesting habits for a duck.... it nests in underground burrows near the water's edge. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #ducks #waterfowl #shelducks

Another one for #BlueMonday and one that perfectly matches the #Bluesky logo! 😀👍 A Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus) #WildHungary #butterflies #MondayBlues

A big, bad blue bird for #BlueMonday . European Roller (Coracias garrulus) living up to its Latin name and being very garrulus. Although not related to #corvids , its raspy, guttural call reminds me of the rolling call of a crow or rook #BirdingHungary #MondayBlues #rollers #birds #BlueBirds

Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides) flypast from this afternoon. This tiny heron is primarily an African species, but extends its range to the extreme SE corner of Europe during the summer. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #herons #waders #birds

Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) just starting its dive... showing off that slate gray breast it gets during breeding season. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #terns

Another image of today's Black-headed Bunting (Emberiza melanocephala). #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #buntings #BuntingHunting #birds

Here's a good one for #SundayYellow .. male Black-headed Bunting (Emberiza melanocephala). Rare in Hungary but a few show up every summer in the extreme south of the country. Hungary is the extreme NW limit of its range. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #buntings #BuntingHunting #birds

A White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) catching some shut-eye on the nest. She will need it because once those kids hatch, there will be no rest for months! 😀 #BirdingHungary #birds #storks #waders

Something to brighten your day.. a huge field of Red Poppies (Papaver rhoeas). Like something out of the Wizard of Oz. 😄 #WildHungary #wildflowers #WildflowerPower

A plain Jane of the flycatcher world.. Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata) #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #flycatcher #FlycatcherFriday #birds

Another portrait of the Little Owl (Athene noctua) from last weekend. This is Hungary's commonest owl on the plains and farmland. In the forests, it's the Tawny Owl. #BirdingHungary #birds #owls #BirdsofPrey

🎵 Take me home, country roads... One of my fav #birding roads, south of the town of Bugyi. This is where I had the Corn Crake Saturday night. I could have been sleeping, or at a night club .. but no! I was freezing my butt off in 4 celsius (39 F) temps looking for night #birds 😄 #BirdingHungary

Speaking of European Bee-eaters, I caught this distant pair in the act of mating. #BirdingHungary #birds #bee-eaters

A cooperative Bee-eater (Merops apiaster) from yesterday. They are not bothered by traffic zipping by, but as soon as you stop and point a camera at them, they fly away. 😄 They just don't like that attention from humans. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #bee-eaters #birds

Another flight shot of European Roller (Coracias garrulus). Putting on the air brakes! 😄 #BirdingHungary #birds #rollers

One of my favorite summertime #birds .. Lesser Gray Shrike (Lanius minor). It has one of the longest migrations of any shrike, travelling from Eastern Europe and Western Asia to South Africa and back every year. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #shrikes

The endangered European Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) aka Souslik. Much smaller than North American ground squirrels, it's about the size of a rat. Population has declined about 30% in the last decade due to habitat loss and fragmentation. #WildHungary #squirrels #rodents

Incoming European Roller (Coracias garrulus). A big, powerful predatory songbird of the open plains. It's primarily insectivorous but will also take mice, lizards, frogs, snakes and nestlings of other birds. #BirdingHungary #birds #rollers #RoxyRoller

The only species of roller found in Europe.. the European Roller (Coracias garrulus). This is also the most migratory of the 14 roller species. Satellite telemetry has revealed that many of Hungarian rollers winter in Botswana. #BirdingHungary #rollers #BirdsSeenin2024 #birds

It also happens to be #WaderWednesday Here's my contribution to that illustrious day of the week 😀 ... a Common Redshank (Tringa totanus) in flight. #BirdingHungary #waders #shorebirds #sandpipers

Another #WoodpeckerWednesday is upon us. Here is a male Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius). It's the European version of NA's Pileated Woodpecker. Both species are in the same genus. #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #woodpeckers #birds

Here's a Cream Spot Tiger Moth (Arctia villica) from my recent visit to Italy. #WildItaly #moths #lepidoptera #TigerMoths

A White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) wandering through the poppies. #BirdingHungary #storks #waders #BigBirds

Speaking of #kestrels here is one from the weekend. Female Eurasian Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). Huge range. Found from Portugal to Siberia and Japan, South Asia and Africa too. Like the #BeachBoys song, they get around. 😄 #BirdingHungary #BirdsSeenin2025 #BirdsofPrey #raptors #falcons

Another portrait of a ♂️ Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus) from the weekend. A summer visitor to Central Europe, they are primarily insectivorous. Like most #raptors they are opportunistic, but I see them take far fewer small rodents than #kestrels #BirdingHungary #BirdsofPrey #falcons #birds
