A rare moment of good in this week's news. When gov works with the people instead of against them, great things can be done. Thank you all for your support. Together is how we get through this. 🫶

BREAKING: DOD issued its new military policy today banning transgender military service, implementing President Trump's anti-trans military executive order The policy was filed tonight on the docket in the case challenging the EO: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Well now we’ll see how seriously corporate CEOs take their “fiduciary” responsibility to their shareholders.

"...the direction of travel is clear: there is a desire to downgrade, if not eliminate, independent, science-based evidence and expert advice; there is also a rank disregard for international agreements."

Breaking The D.C. Circuit REJECTS the Trump DOJ's bid to stop a judge's order for the government to pay certain foreign aid contracts by 11:59 p.m. tonight. Trump's DOJ has a pending appeal before SCOTUS. Doc https://buff.ly/43g9luS

Reminder: You can make a meaningful difference in the lives of Trans people by supporting their relocation efforts. They don’t just need housing & bus tickets. They need mental healthcare for help with readjustment, money for clothes, Ubers to jobs. You can support these efforts. We do.

DHS quietly eliminates ban on surveillance based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Policy texts, before and after included below. www.advocate.com/politics/dhs...

“Glitch”? 🤣

WE JUST GOT DOGE’D no funding for this year. We have to cancel the program and email 450 applicants there will be no REU program in physics at MSU. First time in 20+ years. I’m fucking livid, y’all.

Just a little light reading. Auschwitz didn't just fall from the sky.

Arizona AG Kris Mayes, New Mexico AG Raul Torrez, and Oregon AG Dan Rayfield will begin holding Community Impact Hearings — a national series of townhalls "to hear from the public about the impact of federal firings and DOGE funding freezes across the country." The first will be in Phoenix March 5.

The reporting on the trans travel visa ban is criminal. It does NOT only affect transgender athletes. The cables CLEARLY say it affects all trans people. They can reject visas on point 6 of anyone who is requesting a visa that does not match their assigned sex at birth.

It is so fascinating how no university wants to get out ahead of others on this so they try to play it cool as long as they can then they start screaming and panicking all at once.

NIH funding is frozen. @annikabarber.bsky.social is keeping score: 50%+ of study sections planned for this year (77/148) have been cancelled. I talked to Dr. Barber about why these delays are disastrous, and why scientists should be pooling info and speaking up: www.chronicle.com/article/nih-...

Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

I’m a scientist working on dark matter and neutron stars and I wouldn’t be who I am today without Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington, Haile Germima, Toni Morrison, Jane Austen, A.A. Milne, Errol Morris, Star Trek, Herman Melville, Lorna Simpson, Edward Lear, Tina Turner, and so many others.

Hey, artists, in case you were wondering, I am a scientist working on protein design and I would not be where I am today without William Butler Yeats, Mary Oliver, Pablo Neruda, Claude Debussy, Tracy Chapman, Judy Collins, the Indigo Girls, the Marx brothers, and many more.

I gave a campus talk last night on Trump's first 100 days for the WUD Society & Politics group. A student asked me if I thought that, at some point, we might start to describe the US as a competitive authoritarian regime. I said that we were already there, it's just that most folks haven't noticed:

How I feel every morning telling people about the fascist coup currently underway but no one wants to talk about it because they don't want to hear about news or politics right now.

Just want to keep sharing this because this is the courage, integrity, and composure that every single American in a position of leadership needs to be channeling.

This so called “Elon” character is really starting to lose it. Very strange behavior. Are we sure he’s not a bot?

JUST IN: DOJ asks Judge Ali to stay his order from today — which was to enforce a TRO in place since Feb. 13 — because, DOJ says, "the Court’s order requires Defendants to disburse nearly $2 billion dollars by 11:59 PM tomorrow." THEY HAD TO DO SO SINCE FEB. 13, THOUGH!! That's the whole point!

The GOP passed a budget resolution tonight that will gut Medicaid, SNAP, and other vital programs — as 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Why? To finance more tax cuts for the top 1%. We have socialism in this country for the rich, harsh capitalism for everyone else.

If I lived in Representative Pettersen’s or Representative Mullins’ district I’d be contacting friends & neighbors to organize a group of constituents to go to their district office to say thank you for making a sacrifice for all of us. [I’d also be alerting the press to get coverage]

I’m not usually one to say “I told you so,” but this is just so infuriating. WE FUCKING TOLD YOU IT WASN’T ABOUT SPORTS. 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾😢😡🤬

THEY'RE GOING TO ISSUE PERMANENT VISA BANS TO TRANS VISITORS TO THE US. This isn't just for athletes. The directive as stated applies to all visa applications made by trans folks and declare it material fraud to use a different gender marker on applications. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

The AP was banned from the event but the French press corps conspired to get a US AP reporter inside and insisted she be allowed to ask her question.

Musk's tech-bros have "refused to identify themselves, asked questions about political loyalty, attempted to pit colleagues against each other, and demonstrated limited technical ability. This process created significant security risks.” -- Civil servants who quit today apnews.com/article/doge...

My feed is such that I thought these were brain MRI images 🤣

DEI policies have never once infringed on my academic freedom in the classroom. But anti-DEI policies would very much have prevented someone like me from becoming the teacher and researcher I am today.

"DEI on campus ... was starting to act like many faculty members' direct supervisor and telling them how and what to teach" I'm sorry, what? I've never experienced this myself and I've never heard another faculty member anywhere ever complain about anything remotely like this.

May Institute on Computation and Statistics for Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics @KhouryCollege @Northeastern in Boston MA is happening in person on April 28-May 11, 2025 and is accepting applications! You will not regret attending computationalproteomics.khoury.northeastern.edu

Impeachment is a privileged motion that any member of the House can get a vote on, and Scott Bessent has committed offenses that have been struck down by courts. Our friends at @revolvingdoordc.bsky.social think it's time to make a spectacle. prospect.org/politics/202...

This to me is one of the central stories about current US politics. The tech barons who decisively threw their support behind Trump wanted commercial benefits, of course; but even more, they wanted to discipline their own employees. That’s the real content of all the anti-DEI stuff.

New in PN: How Trump's lawyers are trying to make him a king "In practical terms, if Trump gets SCOTUS to agree he has unfettered power to remove members of independent regulatory agencies, their independence is over. No more will they issue decisions that don’t reflect his policy preferences."

After playing a fictional member of the Resistance a long time ago, I never could have imagined it ever happening in real life, but here we are.

This looks like the battle is joined. Republicans are on course to shut down the govt because of their extremist wing. They're asking Dems for help. Dems are saying bill has to have agreement that Prez can't unconstitutionally "impound" appropriated money - i.e., allow Elon's crime spree.

The Trump Justice Department is declining to prosecute a sitting Republican Congressman who was referred to them by the DC police for beating a woman.

I'm looking to see if the cuts & chaos at CDC and NIH have affected any clinical trials or research for drugs for the treatment of cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or other serious diseases. If you know anything, please contact me at DavidCorn.99 at Signal. Or if you have any other good stories.

“…the foundations of our republic are being jackhammered away… …every government interaction becomes a potential loyalty test. Disagree with the president? Maybe your passport application gets “lost.” Donate to the wrong candidate? Perhaps your tax return faces extra scrutiny”
