This is perfect, and the replies are fun. Well done. Just what I needed.

When I was in middle school we had a baking contest. I baked my favorite cake but left it in the oven a little too long and the corners got just a little dry. The judge did not cut a slice, but only took a bite of one corner. No prize for me. Your first page may be the only bite a reader takes.

I am falling asleep but I finally remembered I wanted to share that I think about WB Yeats’ poem “The Second Coming” about once a day poets.org/poem/second-...

Remembered that I wrote about how awful Woodrow Wilson's historic segregationist purge of Black workers from federal government jobs was last year.... www.thedailybeast.com/woodrow-wils...

This is absolutely true. It's incredible to read about the Wilson Era's Progressive Democracy, bc of how much it sold its soul just for racism. Leading champions of labor reform were southern Democrats, but the South abandoned it to stay racist believing the white rich would protect the white poor.

One last thing I’ll say about this is that judging by people’s messages, the audio version has some stuff not in the edited online transcript, including a discussion of the false tension around empathy in journalism, and a bit about paying attention to sparrows.

chat is it good for a dictionary to be mad at you

Dear humans: if you’re calling someone about their very elderly relative, the first thing you need to say is “everything is fine.” And THEN you can tell me that her TV is broken. Don’t lead with “I work in your mother’s building. I’m here with her now…”

Did you eat and take your meds? Did you drink water? Did you scratch the vet tech when they tried to take your temperature?

We don't talk enough about sound in cooking. Browning off meat for a braise. It's boring and I'm typing here while waiting -- then bingo! I can hear the sound change. Time to flip it over.

You will never be wrong if you vomit on the shoes of anyone who unironically talks about "high IQ people."

On #birds, #nature, and so much more....

We need to dust off these songs that we were raised on for such a time as this. A Civil Rights Era classic... www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdKE...

I had a surrealist dream this morning. One of the elements was a helicopter scooping up part of a landscape -- trees, grass, underbrush, soil -- and dropping it into a lake. I asked why but got no answer.

Firing all of the JAGs (Judge Advocates General)—the top lawyers in each service branch—is just as bad as, if not worse than, firing (most of) the Joint Chiefs.

I spent my evening watching pressure washing videos on YouTube. Multiple pressure washing videos.

If you work at Goddard, or Space Telescope Science Institute or similar — and work on anything related to space — I want to talk. As The Baltimore Banner continues to cover changes to the fed. workforce, I'm interested in what it means for the future of astronomy. 🛰️ 🔭

My kid's rental was billed for 4600 kWh of electricity last month. The utility won't answer their phones so that she can have someone check the meter for malfunction. If anyone out there knows how common or uncommon meter malfunctions are, I'm interested in some data. Google has been no help.

Guys?!? The Hanif Kurieshi interview in the Paris Review is a delight.

Tomorrow is Friday and as such it is Finish It Friday and I will be trying to finish old art projects. Perhaps you also have something that brings you joy that you have bsck burnered? Maybe you could join me tomorrow.

Most people probably aren’t tracking this but Senate Republicans just started an all-night voting marathon that will allow them to gut Medicaid and increase child hunger while giving handouts to billionaires like Elon Musk.

I just updated the website! matsuzawaurushi.stores.jp

I would pay real money for a punk cover of “No More Kings” - and even more for new songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. Especially NOAA. I need that.

I've been writing a series of essays for PBS on men whose style I admire. The latest is about James Baldwin, a man who knew how to sing through clothes. www.pbs.org/wnet/america...

www.splinter.com/destructive-... From Feb 10th - I only just saw this - "Laid off administrative staff, post-docs, and faculty means delayed science. Delayed science means delayed drug discovery, among other things. Delayed drug discovery means dead people."

ICYMI: I’m leading a constitutional amendment to undo Citizens United. After an election where a billionaire bought a seat as Shadow President, we must ensure our democracy is truly of, by, and for the people — not corporations and billionaire donors. truthout.org/articles/jay...
