I don't give a damn what anyone says. "West End Girls" is a banger and I will crank it with the windows down. "Call the police, there's a madman around" indeed! 😜 If you're in the UK (or planning a vacay), @petshopboys.co.uk on tour this summer! youtu.be/p3j2NYZ8FKs?...

1/A quick point about #AI generated music as a way to keep a band's legacy alive. Humans have 2 things AI will never have: consciousness and free will. Generative AI can examine a band's catalog and crank out infinite permutations based on it. But it will never *BE* them. Here's an example...

How antisocial! Where *would* one procure such a contraption? Asking for a friend. 😜

The Pulitzer and Substack by Ted Gioia - open.substack.com/pub/tedgioia.... My sentiments exactly.

Who knew the "Again" in MAGA was that magical period in the 19th century b4 the discovery of germ theory when the local doctor was also the mortician bc it was just way more convenient?

Exhibit 1,256,427 that we're still sitting at Humans: 0, Father Time: 7 bil., give or take. Please nobody tell my wife that my energy drink vice isn't ACTUALLY increasing my life span. 😜

The only thing that surprises me is that it took this long - open.substack.com/pub/garymarc...

Huh. open.substack.com/pub/garymarc...

I'm extremely saddened by this - www.cnn.com/world/live-n.... It's not enough to screw up our own country, now we're punching the world like an angry bully. Shame on our impotent and less than worthless Congress for allowing this with no oversight.

1/Last evening, we had a wonderful time hanging out with one of our "new" neighbors we'd yet to meet, in quotes bc if you'd asked me yesterday how long they'd been in the neighborhood, my honest answer would have been "a few months". They moved here in March *2024*! God, getting old sucks. Anyhow...

Good morning to my #Deadhead brethren (and sistern?)! It's old hat at this point, but I still marvel at the ability of Grateful Dead music to be adapted into so many forms. Bobby and the Philharmonic (the "Royal Phil"?) and Jerry's "China Cat" solo adapted for flute? Tapers - hook a brother up! πŸ“ΌπŸŽ»βš‘β€οΈ

Saturday portrait: "Beefcake In Repose"

Started on Leah Sottile's "Blazing Eye Sees All: Love Has Won, False Prophets, and the Fever Dream of the American New Age" (bookshop.org/p/books/blaz...) and it's shaping up to be a great read! More to come later πŸ’™πŸ“š

1/One more about PE and music catalogs, this link about the biggest deals so far: info.xposuremusic.com/article/the-.... What gets me about this list aren't the eye-watering sums, but the magnitude of the artists on the list. Obviously they're free to do what they want with their music, BUT...

1/Expanding on my "canary in the coal mine" reference, watch the court cases surrounding generative #AI and intellectual property, and most importantly, who's bankrolling them. One big ol' stinky example? Advance Local Media v. Cohere - www.bakerlaw.com/advance-loca.... (cont.)

1/On a related note, I have a theory about what's behind the massive rise in private equity purchases of music catalogs (www.loeb.com/en/insights/...) that has to do with #AI and boy, I hope I'm wrong. The canary in the coal mine? The outcome of AI and intellectual property in the courts - cui bono.
