Did y'all hear about Elon Musk new $2 BILLION FAA contract? Conflict of interest . . .👀 Instead of Republicans taking jobs and programs away, they need to be investigating this—but OH RIGHT—they report to King Musk. www.cnn.com/2025/02/25/b...

I continue to note that the thing that really made the Romanian authorities go after the Tate brothers was that they held an American woman against her will. I cannot imagine how that poor woman must be feeling, that her own country's administration is preferring her torturers rights to her own.

News tonight that 5 of the 8 regional commissioners of the Social Security Administration resigned. RCs were part of the Tuesday meeting that, we reported, asked for workforce cuts of roughly 50%. (GovExec also has a source saying total cuts would be closer to 15%) www.govexec.com/transition/2...

Watching true crime docs in an effort to prevent doom scrolling. Police responding to a murder refer to the victim as a non-breather. While accurate... wow that is dehumanizing!

It’s hard to communicate the crisis that’s unfolding and the dangers ahead because a lot of superficial things won’t change. The Netflix will still turn on. Your sports teams will play. You’ll see movies. But the things that make liberal democratic life uniquely stable, secure, & vibrant will decay.

I’m somehow on a Heritage Foundation mailing list (😂) and they sent a survey to see what we think of DOGE. Who wants to offer some m-fing feedback?!? secured.heritage.org/the-heritage... Please share with a friend or a thousand :)

A father was taken by ICE this morning while dropping his kids off at school here in Chicago.

Crockett: Mr. President, guess what? Russia invaded Ukraine. Can we at least agree on that one? Facts matter. Is there anybody in here that has enough courage to say Russia invaded Ukraine? …. Crockett: This is the problem

This story has brought our community together to support this lovely family from Turkey who owns a local restaurant. They offer food to the homeless and those w/little $. They are kind and generous. Yesterday ICE detained them…and people are PISSED. share.inquirer.com/gKqFM7

Pedro Pascal responding to transphobia on social media: “I can’t think of anything more vile and small and pathetic than terrorizing the smallest, most vulnerable community of people who want nothing from you, except the right to exist.” (via @charliejane.bsky.social) [capitalfm.com]

we are well beyond anti-trans bigotry and fully into the crime against humanity of persecution. anyone who fails to stand up, say this, and resist it is complicit.

Not only could Medicaid cuts affect me, but my therapist, whose practice is primarily made up of Medicaid patients, has told me she wouldn't be able to continue providing services. The cascade will be large and deep.

Every opinion piece in the Washington Post must now follow Bezos' new rightwing guidelines. Writers can say that they would have written the same thing anyway, but the fact remains: Their piece was only published because it met his new rightwing guidelines. Support independent, pro-democracy media.

I'm really struggling today. Businesses I frequent are selling out and, as a low income person, it's hard to find economical replacements. That's not even the worst of it. Everything I rely on (e.g. housing, SS, Medicaid, etc...) is under threat. Mental health is a struggle under normal conditions.

Connecticut lawmaker Josh Elliott was “horrified” to learn that a local company supplied chemicals for federal executions. His office was flooded with calls urging action, and he started pushing to ban execution drug sales for good. boltsmag.org/connect...

By and large, corporate Democrats seem content to let this rampage on the middle-class federal workforce proceed apace.

Y'all, I know that people want the freedom to not get vaccinated. I don't get it, but I know people want that freedom. Fine. I want the freedom to protect myself and my family from these potentially deadly illnesses and this is taking away my freedom to do that. And it makes me furious

I wrote about a new @rightsduff.bsky.social piece at Foreign Policy, talking about how for all of the Silicon Valley VC crowd insisting Trump is great for AI, killing USAID actually will do real harm to the AI industry in the US, while helping China. www.techdirt.com/2025/02/26/m...

Utterly destroying any capacity of the state to help people so that it can be reduced to a military and and border cops to guard the wealth of oligarchs

Hmm, USDA's Brooke Rollins says the Biden administration didn't do anything on avian flu, then it announces... continuing a program that Biden did? www.wsj.com/opinion/agri...

"We are becoming less free and our government more corrupt and abusive. But these changes are rarely perceptible from the vantage point of daily life. At least at the start, before some become too entrenched, too consolidated, too invasive to ignore." How it happens, via @aselrod.bsky.social:

WHAT STAGE OF CAPITALISM IS THIS? “As the federal government reduces prosecutionof white-collar crime, states are now courting businesses by competing to further shield corporate executives from legal actions that hold them accountable for wrongdoing.”

Breaking: FDA's March meeting to select flu shot strains for 2025-2026 season has been canceled per email sent to committee members, a VRBPAC member told me. drug companies need about 6 months leeway to make shots in time for fall vax campaigns. #healthpolicy

NEWS: The Trump administration has funneled Elon Musk's company $86 million out of NASA coffers since the inauguration - all while NASA now slashes 5 percent of its entire workforce.

Three decades after legislation pushed for the return of Native American remains to Indigenous communities, many of the nation’s top museums and universities still have thousands of human remains in their collections. Check on institutions near you with our database (just updated):

Elon Musk said DOGE made a mistake by cutting USAID’s Ebola prevention but it had been “restored.” That’s not true, current and former officials told me and @johnphudson.bsky.social. “There have been no efforts to ‘turn on’” Ebola prevention, said Nidhi Bouri, who oversaw team until January.

DOGE has announced a total of 45 Social Security field office closures--so far. SSA has 1,200 field offices where people can receive in-person help getting benefits, updating records, enrolling in Medicare & more. They served 30M applicants & beneficiaries in 2023 — nearly 120K *per day*.

Just an FYI: Medicaid fraud is rarely perpetrated by beneficiaries. The fraudsters are almost always the doctors and CEO's that administer Medicaid. For example: when a doctor charges the government $600 for an $8 breast pump and pockets the cash and the third party administrator takes a cut.
