What in the actual... That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works. www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/...

Join us in welcoming our newest partner, the EBR Library Alliance! Give them a follow on social media, and if you live in #BatonRouge, look for their links on actions you can take to save your #library!! www.facebook.com/ebrlibraryal...

This is what #Lafayette #library advocates have been dealing with for years. They are tired, they are frustrated, and they are fed up. Enough is enough. #buildthelibrary www.theadvertiser.com/story/news/l...

Happy to see justice done for one of #lafayettela's #library advocates, though it's ridiculous he's had to live under the shadow of this unlawful arrest for three years. And yes, Robert Judge remains on the board. www.theadvocate.com/acadiana/new...

This *will be* the testing grounds of implementing such sweeping bans across public schools nationwide.

In #BatonRouge, the mayor is proposing a raid on the public #library using the same playbook we've seen before: in #Lafayette, in #Livingston, & in #StTammany. Here's the truth, and what you can do about it: www.la-cac.org/br-proposal-...

Thank you to @slj.com for covering @thelibrariansfilm.bsky.social! It was powerful to get to share our stories and get such positive response to the work of librarians. @librarianjones.com @sassylibrarian.bsky.social @freadomfighters.bsky.social www.schoollibraryjournal.com/story/School...

The problem is not the library in our community. @la-cac.org

“A chilling new documentary at the Sundance film festival examines the phenomenon of book banning in US schools, which flourished in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the ordinary heroes who fight them on the local level.” @thelibrariansfilm.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/film/2025/ja...

Consider donating to Louisiana Citizens Against Censorship (@la-cac.org ) so they have the resources to launch a resistance all over the state. Outside of rallying folks to show up at meetings, there was also a successful email writing campaign that killed bad bills www.zeffy.com/en-US/donati...

In all seriousness, this letter betrays a truth about anti-library activists: they fear education; they fear children who learn empathy and love for their fellow human beings. Because education & love defeat racism, & homophobia, & hate. This is the beauty of #libraries, Greg. Not their weakness.

Greg Ardoin, a fixture at Lafayette Public Library BoC meetings, thinks libraries need to stop "doing" things - like "promoting reading, entertaining children, and informing and educating the public." Gosh, why would libraries ever want to do such horrible things? www.nola.com/opinions/let...

Kim Snyder’s The Librarians is a shocking look at the organized wave of book bannings sweeping the US. Snyder joined EPs Sarah Jessica Parker & Alison Benson, & librarians Carolyn Foote & Suzette Baker to discuss this extraordinary assault on free speech. www.indiewire.com/news/festiva... #notahoax

Free speech orgs denounce Ed. Dept's calling book bans a ‘hoax' Such language is "dismissive of the students, educators, librarians, and authors who have firsthand experiences of censorship... (in) school libraries and classrooms,” said PEN America's Kasey Meehan www.nbcdfw.com/news/nationa...

Local far-right take an L in Louisiana, after the entirety of a extremist-led library board was fired! The parish council was tired of the controversy, so canned ‘em. There wouldn’t be a “controversy” if local folks weren’t showing up and raising hell over their book ban attempts! (Short 🧵 )

Moving forward, it will be more important than ever to speak out against #censorship and up for #libraries and #librarians. As a society, we need to protect the things which are important to us. We cannot take them for granted, or they will be lost.

Anti-family choice, anti-literacy, anti-education book banners have been throwing a temper tantrum since the Livingston Parish Council voted to protect their library from attempts to defund literacy & reading programs. This tells you all you need to know about their motives.

Once again, the Lafayette BoC ignores the First Amendment rights of the public. How long will our Parish Council allow them to continue to break the law?? LA R.S. 42:14 (D): each public body...shall allow a public comment period...prior to action on an agenda item upon which a vote is to be taken.

"Instead of destroying such precious community resources, we should be protecting them with legislation that ensures the freedom to read for all." Thanks to The Advocate for publishing my letter! www.nola.com/letters-loui...

56 small tasks to be proactive against book censorship in 2025. Choose one per week to help ensure that public goods like schools & libraries remain viable democratic institutions & to protect our most vulnerable populations. Book censorship is about more than books. bookriot.com/56-small-tas...

“Lynette Mejía, executive director of @la-cac.org, says one of the benefits of building a coalition is that when there is a fight, everyone is aligned.” @slj.com www.slj.com/story/Librar...

I’m blessed with so many incredible friends, one of whom sent this in to The Advocate. Thank you, Kristen, for being so supportive and for being such a fierce library advocate in your own parish.

Lies, lies, lies. Unfortunately for the defendants, the Internet keeps the score. THIS is the truth about who these people are and what they do. Nothing but schoolyard bullies who never grew up, getting their kicks by attacking #librarians. Pathetic.

If the truth is a defense, then the defendants in this case have nothing. They have lied and continue to lie - but the truth is, they DID do these awful things and there is hard evidence to prove it.

From Annabelle Jenkins's graduation book ban protest to breaking down the common myths about book censorship, here were the censorship stories you were most interested in in 2024. That, plus this week's book censorship news: bookriot.com/this-years-m...

The LA Supreme Court has ruled in Amanda Jones' favor! Her defamation case can now be heard by the 1st Circuit Court - a major victory in her fight to hold the men who defamed her to account, and a great victory for #freadom in #Louisiana. #librarians #protectourlibrarians #saveourlibraries #winning

A federal judge has struck down key parts of an Arkansas law that would have allowed criminal charges against librarians and booksellers for providing so-called “harmful” materials to minors

These laws are unjust, undemocratic, and unconstitutional. The First Amendment is the foundation of our Republic, and it will always rise above politics. We look forward to seeing more of these rulings come down.

Not a drag queen, not a librarian, and certainly not books. We should be focused on locking up the actual predators who groom children.

Congratulations to Avoyelles Parish for funding their library for another 10 years! Time and again, #Louisiana voters choose to fund our #libraries because we understand the IMMENSE value these public assets bring to every community.

The "provision" referred to here was an amendment added in the last moments of the #lalege session. Citizens made their case against this bill & it failed in committee. Dirty tricks after it was too late for the people to have a say got it passed. #ifyoucantwinfairlyjustcheat

After failing to persuade #Louisiana citizens that our public #libraries are full of pornography & #librarians are groomers, the book banners have moved on to a new tactic - defunding. Systems across the state are facing enormous cuts to resources and programming. We must defeat these efforts!

📚✨ *Stand with Louisiana Libraries!* ✨📚 #Librarians & #libraries across our state are facing unprecedented threats from book bans & #censorship. We must protect their right to offer #diversebooks & ideas for all. 🛑 This #GivingTuesday, help us safeguard the freedom to read in #Louisiana!

Libraries are under attack all across our state. Support our mission to #ProtectOurLibraries and ensure they remain places of learning, safety, and open dialogue for everyone in Louisiana! 📖💪 #SupportLibraries #SaveLibrarians #LouisianaLibraries #LibraryAdvocacy #FreedomToRead

St. Martin Parish residents - are you aware there is a proposition on the Dec 7 ballot to renew the library millage, but also to rededicate 70% of that income to constructing and operating a new jail? If anyone from St Martin is interesting in fighting against this, please let us know. We can help!

#givingtuesday will be here soon. Help us continue our mission of protecting #libraries and #librarians in #Louisiana. www.zeffy.com/donation-for...

When rumors of banning LGBTQ+ books hit the library board in a small Louisiana town, @librarianjones.com took action, facing death threats. For her, silence was never an option. “Hell hath no fury like a librarian scorned,” she writes. Join us at 11aET for the latest #VelshiBannedBookClub. #Velshi

How to explain book bans to those who *actually* want to understand what's going on. From top like "why should I care about book bans" to debunking common myths perpetuated by good-hearted but short-sighted book lovers, this guide covers a LOT. bookriot.com/ways-to-expl...

Listen to the people on the ground fighting these battles day in and day out. Ask them what is needed - and what builds the freedom to read across "party lines"

Where does it begin? Journalists, universities, activists are targeted - people who are unafraid to speak out for decency & kindness. Think about what this means, where it's going, and how it could end.

We're gonna repost this from every angle possible, because it's just too good.

Just deserts. It's time these people felt a tiny fraction of the pain they've inflicted upon others.
