Lab Mice Appear to Offer ‘First Aid’ Care to Their Unconscious Companions, Even Pulling on Their Tongues A new study finds that mice will sniff, lick and pull the tongue of other mice that are under anesthesia, serving to open their airways www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/l...

Among the federal workers fired were those responsible for helping to ensure food safety. You may want to consider cooking your food until well done or becoming a vegetarian for a few years. #VetMedSky #foodsafety

Love it!

Saw the pre-print and excited to see the validation data in the final paper!

Here’s some positive H5N1 news for a change: conditional approval for poultry vaccines made by Zoetis for chickens. Why didn’t we do this sooner? The answer is more complex than you might think. www.science.org/content/arti...

We typically think of food and diet when we think about the GI microbiome. Did you know your sleep cycle and circadian rhythm also play an important role in maintaining your "gut" microbiome? www.nature.com/articles/s41...

👋Good Wednesday Morning Bluesky Friends🦋 I'm not able to go to my Capitol in Lansing, Michigan today, so I'm wearing Blue and for an Exclamation Point, I will wear my Pink Pussy Hat at Noon🩷👊 Please be safe out there and let’s continue fighting the Good Fight💙✊🫶🤗

It turns out, pasteurization works - helping to keep us (and our pets) safe from diseases like H5N1 bird flu since 1862! #VetMedSky #betterdatasavespets #cats www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Aluminum adjuvants in vaccines. Finally an NYT article that doesn’t try to spin a “both sides” narrative. This is one of the most studied ingredients in vaccines, and they have a terrific safety record in all species (except cats). Great #OneHealth trivia—adjuvants were invented by a vet! 1/7

Agree! Know your lab animal model and what good information it gives you, but also what it doesn’t tell you. A common one is that mice are nocturnal while humans are diurnal, so most mice are dosed the equivalent of the middle of the night- different physiology. #chronobiology #betterdatasaveslives

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH** * Currently paused by Executive Order ** Grant reviews now all canceled www.kcur.org/news/2025-01...

Cool study from @hutlab.bsky.social showing that dog microbiomes also have strong fiber-microbiome-host interactions. This study has implications for how different diets can impact canine 🐕 health #betterdatasavespets #vetmed #dogs

Really great summary of the H5N1 (“high path” bird flu) hopping species around the globe so far!

Great thread about organizations helping #pets affected by the LA fires #vetmed #LAfires

Cannot stop thinking about how Octavia Butler wrote a book in 1993 about climate change. It opens with deadly fires in LA in 2025. In the story, a fascist President has just won office with the campaign slogan "Make America Great Again." She was a modern day Nostradamus. If only we'd listened.

Thankfully, no one tried to “cure” my left-handedness! #lefties #southpaws

Really cool paper that expands our knowledge of combinatorial antibiotic interactions. Bacteria can become resistant to multiple antibiotics at the same time, but they ALSO can become sensitive to other antibiotics (trade-offs). #Microsky #vetmed #betterdatasavespets www.nature.com/articles/s41...

My friend sent me this photo of her cat yesterday because she thought it was neat/cute. I had to let her know that when cats have differently sized pupils, it can be serious - even a veterinary emergency.... This is a condition called anisocoria. Luckily her cat seems to be okay.

So happy our paper made the list!

PSA for cat owners in the US: cats have been contracting H5N1 (bird flu). They are very susceptible to it and the fatality rate for cats is 67%. To avoid it: -keep your cats indoors. They can catch it from infected birds and mice. -do not feed them raw dairy -do not feed them raw meat

Updated PPE guidance for veterinary staff handling cats with suspected H5N1. #VetMedSky #VetSky

A longer read that really nicely covers so many angles of the H5N1 Bird Flu crisis and what is and isn't being done by industry, public health, and government to stop it... Kudos to @amymaxmen.bsky.social 🛟🧭🧪📈😷 health policy sociology lawsky

Do 👏🏻 not 👏🏻 get 👏🏻 pets 👏🏻 as 👏🏻 gifts 👏🏻 unless 👏🏻 the 👏🏻 recipient 👏🏻 wants 👏🏻 one 👏🏻 and 👏🏻 exactly 👏🏻 that 👏🏻 one 👏🏻. For the next two months animal rescue folks are going to face an onslaught of "we need to rehome our [pet] because... [avoidable excuse]." Pets are not commodities.

If you have longitudinal microbiome data (data with sparsity and compositionality), I have found this method to be really useful to better understand my data with repeated sampling. Highly recommended!

A really great thread summarizing and adding context to the ISAPP recommendation! In both human and veterinary medicine there is this perception that probiotics will fix detrimental effects of antibiotics on the microbiome, when there is no evidence to support that. (Help with symptoms potentially)

There are two fatal cases of H5N1 in cats in California. Both cats had been fed raw milk from the recalled lot in the ongoing outbreak associated with Raw Farms. The milk wasn’t tested. But an astute veterinarian tested the cats for flu based on clinical suspicion. #VetMedsky #IDsky #OneHealth

Quite a comprehensive piece of work: "Gut physiology and environment explain variations in human gut microbiome composition and metabolism." www.nature.com/articles/s41... Definitely worth checking out if you work on animal microbiomes, especially in the gut

And remember to spay and neuter.
