Just to underline - the US voted with Russia and North Korea on a UN resolution on Ukraine. China abstained

3yrs ago, russia carpet-bombed Mariupol, forcing people to seek shelter in the drama theater--their last safe haven. Then russia dropped an aerial bomb there, killing hundreds. Today, the US pushed at the UNGA a resolution that fails to recognize russia as the aggressor.

I'm not having Fraser Nelson playing dumb on the rise of racism on the right after years spent printing Murray, Liddle, Taki and Shriver. I literally had a DM row with him years ago where I said this would happen.

I repeat: Article Five is not worth much under these people. Act accordingly. “Vance on Thursday night suggested that the Trump admin could reconsider its military presence in Germany, tying continued…defense commitments to Berlin’s stance on free speech” www.politico.eu/article/vanc...

Dog people, my friend Nick's canine son has torn his ACL. Nick is being supported by the PDSA, but he's not earning at the moment and still needs to raise a couple of hundred quid. If you could spare a fiver, that would be amazing. Thank you! www.gofundme.com/f/zbca86-bea...

Otto Krayer. The only German scientist who refused on moral grounds to succeed a Jewish colleague who had been dismissed from his professorial chair by the Nazis. Left Germany to lead the Pharmacology department at the American University in Beirut before moving to Harvard.

I was electrocuted, beaten, stabbed in the leg and starved after being captured while defending my home and family in Mariupol. We held back Putin’s invasion for several weeks while Russia slaughtered over 25,000 predominantly Russian speaking Ukrainians including women and children.

Can we also keep in mind that while Zelenskyy like Churchill 1940-45 postponed elections, Trump in peacetime tried to overturn by violence an election he lost - and has since pardoned all the co-conspirators in his attempted coup?

I don't think Trump is being blackmailed or bribed by Russia. I think he genuinely believes that a richer, bigger country should be able to do whatever it wants to smaller neighbours, and that Ukraine's defiance of Russia spits in the face of some imagined gangster-capitalist proper world order.

If you missed today's newsletter, in which I said 'look, come on, we really do need to be increasing spending back to 1966 to 1990 levels and it's mad to think you can get political consent for that without increasing spending elsewhere', don't worry: I will be saying it for most of the year I think

I simply could not tell you what McSweeney believes in. I know what he doesn’t believe. But I have literally no idea what he wants to do with the power he so accurately and purposefully sought. My response to Get In.

This is an excellent (long) read by @thomaszimmer.bsky.social on Russell Vought, one of the few people in the Trump 2.0 administration that actually matters (and is largely ignored in the media).

Hi All, just sent out my weekend update, free as always. This is arguably the most momentous week in European history since 1991 or even 1945. The US pivoted this week to be a friend of dictators who is forcing unilateral concessions on democracies. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

To the right-wing pundits crowing over Vance's speech: if you are really "less worried" about a dictator-state that's invaded its neighbour, killed tens of thousands of people, reduced cities to rubble & engaged in mass rape and child abduction, than you are about "wokery", then you are truly lost.

Labour are never going to be viewed as being as tough on immigration as Reform. Focussing on it iincreases the salience of the issue Reform want to talk about. Many Reform voters have had enough of Labour and the Tories and don't trust them. They're not sitting around waiting to be wooed back.

The point of the CPS "Here to Stay?" paper is v much about the question mark. Implicit title is "Here to Stay - or Remigration?" or "Here to Stay - or can we send them back?" In flying a remigration kite, it takes care to duck all the key questions about the proposal cps.org.uk/research/her...

In The Observer, @robfordmancs.bsky.social makes an important point that is not heard often enough in the current political debate.

If you want to win an election against far right opposition you need to bring together two groups. The activated liberals outraged by the other side and the more moderate groups who want govt to make their lives less difficult. Not by trying to win the enthusiastic supporters of the other side.

A lot of people here should really look at this site and consider what it means. boysvswomen.com#/

[Making the terrible decision to wade in on this] The Janice Turner article everyone is mad about is harmed by being behind a paywall – the actual text of the article is making the more narrow point that Democrats/liberals handed Trump an easy win by taking the position they did on women's sports.

- The three hostages released today are civilians. Abducting them and holding them was a war crime - The Israeli government did not protect them on Oct 7th, has not prioritised their release, and has put them at harm's way in its campaign of annihilation and starvation of the Gaza Strip 1/

Indeed - and an insurgent third party was polling at 50% in 1981. New governments quite often struggle in the polls, including landslide governments. New Labour's long poll leads are very much the exception, but we've come to think of them as the rule.

✍️Despite being the world's biggest oil producer, America is v reliant on Canadian oil. And getting MORE reliant, not less. So what happens when tariffs get imposed on Canada? The answers are quite unsettling, for the American people... and for everyone else edconway.substack.com/p/america-st...

This recent piece from top colleague Nils Pratley is well worth reading, on the challenges of Heathrow: "The last iteration imagined lowering the M25 for the new runway to cross, rerouting rivers and building car parks for nearly 50,000 cars." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

We never imagined that 80 years after the liberation of #Auschwitz we would see such appalling levels of antisemitism and Islamophobia, and a resurgence of the far right, in Europe. #HolocaustMemorialDay
