Migrants in Germany are overrepresented in vital job sectors including food production, construction, care work and others. #Destatis via @zdfde.bsky.social #Migration. The German economy would collapse in many sectors without migration. Some political parties struggle to accept that reality.

A research project I am involved in is organizing a conference on the integration and naturalization of refugees and migrants and has just published the Call for Papers. The conference will take place on 13–14 November 2025 in Berlin. Looking forward to seeing you in Berlin! #migcitsky

www.socialevraagstukken.nl/nee-tegen-do... Stuk van de Winter-Koçak en Yassine vat voor een groot deel de ongemak samen die ik ook voel. Het afschaffen van de doorstroomtoets is géén oplossing voor gelijke kansen, zoals ik elders las.

Tuesday was a very special day for me. I successfully defended my PhD on socio-economic disparities and peer dynamics in school choice (cum laude 🎉) 1/2

By calling firefighters* heroes, do we flatten their humanity and substitute cultural valorization for pay that would support class mobility? Read Matthew Desmond's 2008 "The Lie of Heroism" journals.sagepub.com/doi/epdf/10.... *More complex WRT incarcerated firefighters 😬 📸Kevin Lendio #sociology

A bit late, but just came across this fascinating episode of the Inequality Podcast with @janetgornick.bsky.social. An exhaustive chat on inequality research and some of the features of 'American exceptionalism', some of which - I'd argue - also apply to Chile. open.spotify.com/episode/4Jdz...

Obtaining a green card through marriage requires two things: (1) lawful entry and (2) marriage to a US citizen. Once you have entered and stayed unlawfully for more than 6 months, you are barred from reentering lawfully for up to 10 years. Thus, married Dreamers seldom can get green cards. 1/

A reminder to submit your abstract to our workshop in May in Amsterdam! Please reskeet/spread the word.

(1/7) 📢 New research alert! Even when people are shown clear evidence of #discrimination, it doesn‘t change their support for anti-discrimination policies. Read @kkrakows.bsky.social, @asmusletholsen.bsky.social, and my article in @ajpseditor.bsky.social to find out why: doi.org/10.1111/ajps...

Economists love using linear regression to estimate treatment effects — it turns out that there are perils to this method, but also amazing perks Come with me in this 🧵 if you want to learn about our now-published paper "Contamination Bias in Linear Regressions!" 1/ (Twitter rerun!)

Still stunned by this Dutchman, whom I've never met before, who, because I don't know the word "verwennen" (to spoil) in Dutch, ends up telling me that "when we live somewhere, we should learn the language 😳 ⬇️

There’s a debate to be had about reforming the academic peer review system. At #ESR, I see real improvements in article quality thanks to reviewers' feedback. But the process places a heavy burden on editors, reviewers and authors. And I agree, perhaps we do submit and publish too much. #peerreview

Good morning, it’s protest day! Against the budget cuts to higher education in the Netherlands, against those that stand against innovation or fair working conditions, against those that would undermine giving folks the tools for critical thinking and make education less accessible. 🟥 #WOinActie

👀 This is such a great read by @mauavenda.bsky.social @usociety.bsky.social on the often surprising and unintended effects of policy changes on people's health, the nuances of how these vary across different people + highlights the important role of longitudinal analysis in evaluating policies.

Impressive research showing the persistent overrepresentation of high-income groups in U.S. elite colleges over a century 🇺🇸 This echoes my work on French elite colleges (Grandes Écoles), where admission rates for children of alumni first dropped but have then remained ~80x higher for 80 years 🇫🇷
