My credentials are that I previously did international security, AI, cyber, and those sort of things at think tanks. Exciting stuff. šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳ó æ

On Technological and Innovation Sovereignty See my take on it from responsible innovation perspective doi.org/10.1007/s115... #science4policy #STS #sciencecomm

everyone should read @cwarzel.bsky.social's piece on the emergent autocratic aesthetic of AI slop: www.theatlantic.com/technology/a... much of the risk analysis of AI content is about volume & speed of disinfo -- but imo the more significant cultural danger is the velocity of AI aesthetics

What wasnā€™t discussed at Asilomar. Fab, by my @official-uom.bsky.social colleague @matthewcobb.bsky.social #histstm www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I suspect this is a HUGELY underestimated factor in radicalization. If you look at, say, QAnon boards, itā€™s not really folks looking for scapegoats for their dire material circumstances. Itā€™s middle-class people with boring lives who want to imagine theyā€™re in The Parallax View.

NEW: updated long-run gap in voting between young men and women in Germany: Gender divide continues to widen, but contrary to what is often assumed, young men continue to vote roughly in line with the overall population, while young women have swung sharply left. www.ft.com/content/29fd...

Very excited to have received a cover for my forthcoming book States of Innovation with @brisunipress.bsky.social! The book explores innovation policies adopted by the Federal government & state governments in Maine, Michigan, California, and Texas in response to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis

Maybe Iā€™m being naive, but 1400/27 =51.852 tanks per EU nation, half as much as the current amount of tanks neutral Switzerland has. These donā€™t seem like huge numbers?

resonates.

So many of my progressive friends blithely use the same platforms. Lots of peopleā€™s identities are strongly digital, while a chunk of other people do not entirely connect private and political forms of power and spaces.

"The govtā€™s unique structure + position allow it to play a distinct role from the private sector... Focusing on near-term returns will not make public investments more efficient in the long run. It merely eliminates the govt's unique advantages to advance scientific research for the public benefit."

If you live in the West, it's not often you read about CIA/NSA cyber operations against China. But here's one: "How the NSA Allegedly Hacked Chinaā€™s Northwestern Polytechnical," a leading Chinese university specializing in aerospace & defence. www.inversecos.com/2025/02/an-i...

The other website is pretty much done

This, via @gquaggiotto.bsky.social, is a fascinating piece of reporting on the roll out of DeepSeek in Chinese local govt. www.sixthtone.com/news/1016677 Even if we assume it's not about R1, released in Jan, v3 was only v released in December so sthg doesn't quite add up timing wise

That UN only works with the United bit, otherwise itā€™s just Nations and weā€™re all back to step one!

It's out! You can now access The Cambridge Handbook of the Law, Ethics and Policy of #AI: www.cambridge.org/core/books/t... 20 #openaccess chapters covering topics on AI, ethics, philosophy, legal domains and sectoral applications. Huge thanks to all the authors who made this possible!

@anneapplebaum.bsky.socialā€™s book ā€œAutocracy, Inc.ā€ helps describe collaborations across transnational organized criminal syndicates that have seized control of nation-state political, economic, military, & police apparatus. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/725302...

We're coming up to the fortieth anniversary of the death of Carl Schmitt, and it seems his anti-liberalism may be winning, thanks first to the left and now the right. I can't help going back to this assessment of Schmittian thinking from George Orwell, though.

As Vance 'lectures' Europe on free speech, it is good to be reminded that the United States ranks 55 (!) on the World Press Freedom Index. The top 10 countries are ALL in Europe. #journalism #democracy #freepress rsf.org/en/index

European powers are in danger of getting caught in a diplomatic fork that has Trump commit to peace but leave Ukraineā€™s security guaranteed by Europeā€™s military. Europe then must decide whether to commit troops into Ukraine or abandon it. 1/ www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Data is not neutral. The entirety of the last 20 years or so of Silicon Valley social media you are the product big brother data collection has only had a veneer of acceptability because people have gained free services and it happened under a liberal US regime. This time itā€™s different.

This is nuts from Match, theyā€™ve created a red flag filter. Surely women want to figure these guys out on dating apps! If guys need AI to not be a creep, thatā€™s not going to stop them being creeps in real life and this will ultimately cause real world harm. Utterly deranged stuff @yoyoel.com

Not sure how often this link works for free, but here is my latest article, 'The Right Kind of Growth for Everyone': academic.oup.com/cjres/articl...

People in the US seem fixated on the coup narrative, from the outside it looks more like the cultural revolution.

this is the best diagnosis of the behavior I've been encountering on here lately. these people think I'm a facebook page! I'm not a page, I'm a guy!

Bureaucracy, famously not important in war

This book is going to be šŸŒŸšŸŒˆšŸ¤–šŸ“”šŸ†. I've been eagerly anticipating it for YEARS! Let's please buy out Lori's entire press run when pre-orders open next week. (And I'm keeping my šŸ¤ž that another para-academic experimental publisher takes up the project + gives it the distribution it deserves!!)

This looks so interesting! Iā€™d apply if it was UK based!

fWIW I do think WFH is changing socialising (tho so is property prices/rents/commuting) but I am sick of it being framed as a civic duty to return to offices. What about creating community near home etc? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

In a study of 100 policies & 250 policymakers, we find that a) there's no such thing as the "best" type of evidence, and b) the scale of evidence used in decisions can be a strong predictor of policy effectiveness. Freely available to all @policysciences.bsky.social

ā€œOne of the core promises of the idea of entrepreneurship, in American culture, has been to transcend the distinction between capitalist & workerā€¦Entrepreneurship is the way that capitalist society dreams of classlessness. And this dreamā€¦is a priceless managerial resource.ā€ @erikmbaker.bsky.social

I canā€™t be the only person who finds the ā€˜no one voted for Muskā€™ framing of what is going on in the US backwards. Doesnā€™t it just play into the idea that no one voted for government employees wielding power either?

"I promise, America will soon be the Cybertruck of countriesā€”uglier than you could have imagined, built for rich chuds, borderline inoperable, and on fire."

Iā€™m very excited to read @rondeibert.bsky.socialā€™s new book. Ron and his team at the Citizen Lab have revolutionized the world of cybersecurity. Itā€™s fair to say that my career would not be the same without Citizen Lab, which I have covered for more than ten years now.
