been playing around with how valuable NHL players are in terms of how much time they can safely chew off the clock, which i've defined as shifts where they break even or win the xG battle. let's express that as a % of 5v5 TOI (about 48 mins per game) and call it the Safe Shift %.

Thought it might be interesting to reproduce Michael Schuckers and Brian Macdonald's paper on rink effects (arxiv.org/pdf/1412.103...) to see if anything had changed in the last 10 (!) years. Turns out, not really, until last season when the range of rink effects suddenly converge quite a bit
