I'm genuinely disheartened by the lack of reviews/coverage for "Eyes on the Prize III," which premieres on HBO tonight. Sigh. This is, I guess, a "me" problem. But nothing you could watch this week is better. Anyway... ICYMI, my review:

Northwestern University Libraries, a leader among its peers in the speed in which it's removing the word "diversity" from its website. 🫠 dailynorthwestern.com/2025/02/23/c... 📚

Just confirmed with the University of St. Thomas that funding to train more special education teachers was *cancelled* because of Trump’s cuts. Why? Because Republicans are vacuuming up every dollar they can for massive corporate tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. They don’t care who gets screwed.

Is anyone in the Twin Cities posting fliers like this already?

Elon Musk is calling for the CFPB's remaining account balance of $711,586,678 to be returned to the American taxpayers. That you give everyone $2-$3. But returning Elon Musk’s money to taxpayers would give everyone about $1,300 each.

We know the link to our Inclusion & Belonging page was temporarily broken. It was meant to redirect to our new inclusion and belonging page, which aligns with the ACS strategic plan 2025-2029 released on Jan. 1. This has now been corrected, and you can access it here: www.acs.org/about/inclus...

The main DEI page from @agu.org has been modified to take diversity out of the title. Glad to see it's not deleted entirely, but hey AGU, we're watching what you do and remembering the big game you once talked about supporting your diverse membership. Today vs. January

Did you know that a famous math reference – most physicists have owned a copy at some point – is the result of a New Deal project to employ scientists and mathematicians? Thread incoming.

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

My great uncle in Ypsilanti used to tell us stories about how when workers would get restless with contract negotiations at the auto plant, management would start spreading false rumors among white workers that union negotiators were demanding special pay and work conditions for black workers.

The only idea tech innovates is “what if we didn’t pay people?”

Here I am, a factory worker enjoying his lunch in the North End of Boston on January 15, 1919. I’ve survived the influenza pandemic, I’m feeling good about life, and I’ve never been more confident I will not be swallowed up by a flood of liquid sugarcane extract

I needed some good news this week

Update: every single meeting has been cancelled 🧪

Just had our data access rescinded for a projected using federal microdata to study and reduce disparate impact in housing markets.

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

In Finnish the word for aurora “revontulet” means “fox fire” because according to legend the origin of the Northern Lights are arctic foxes running so fast that their large, furry tails would brush up snowflakes into the sky - as in my #linocut #FolkloreSunday minouette.etsy.com/listing/1632...

So for those like me who weren't paying attention cause life stuff: The MN House is tied 67-67. 68 people are required to hold a session because that's quorum. The DFL'rs did not show, preventing quorum. Because quorum was not met, the session is ended. But the GOP said no, I guess.

So, as a heads up to folks - I saw a few profs complaining recently that students can no longer seem to spell in essays. Google Docs spell check is essentially broken. It now corrects to "most frequent" spellings, which are often wrong, and does NOT properly catch misspellings any longer.
