From Brandon Flanery's Stumbling: A Sassy Memoir about Coming Out of Evangelicalism

Super strong essay from Lake Drive author @laurencibene.bsky.social on how we might find in libraries the ever elusive sense of community in today’s world. Highly recommended. Food for thought. open.substack.com/pub/laurenci...

What if we asked ourselves "what if" more often and intentionally sat with the productive, enlivening discomfort of divergent thinking? What if we committed to try to create—an often hard path, yes, but ultimately a more joyful and sustainable one? -Julia Rocchi www.juliarocchi.com/2025/02/what...

In a significant move to reshape the digital reading landscape, @bookshop-org.bsky.social has unveiled its new platform for selling ebooks, directly supporting independent bookstores. www.lakedrivebooks.com/2025/02/24/b... @bettiespages.bsky.social

This.

This was a great conversation. It’s always amazing to sit down with people you can laugh and rage with and everything in between. @marlataviano.bsky.social and I have yet to meet in person, but it feels like we’ve known each other since college. ✨ open.spotify.com/episode/1gs8...

Preorder availability coming soon! And follow at @laurencibene Tiger in a Lifeboat is an intimate, immersive, and unflinchingly honest testament to the power of travel, self-trust in a world that takes it from you, and the slow but ultimately beautiful journey back to oneself.

So glad for this.

From Wittenburg Door senior contributing editor Becky Garrison comes Jesus Died for THIS? First published in 2010 as a pilgrimage in search of the risen Christ, ironically this work captured that period in time when to paraphrase Don MacLean, “The day the (Institutional) Church Died.”

So many of you have questions about religion, faith, Christianity, church, and God. So many are deconstructing faith. We've got books by authors that help you put this into words. www.lakedrivebooks.com/books/asian-...

Hey #booksky. We know there’s a lot of frustration with evangelicals these days. This book will help you get it off your chest. The author says it makes the time Christianity as we knew it in the US died for many of us. www.lakedrivebooks.com/books/jesus-...

And congratulations, BookSkyers, for reaching another milestone of 23,000 accounts following #BookSky! Every time we read, debate, and promote books we are doing our tiny, little bit to tell governments they can’t limit what and how we think. Keep making and appreciating subversive art! 📚💙

Sometimes, people ask me if I “believe the Bible.” And I LOVE the Bible. But that’s sort of an odd question if you understand what the Bible is.

"Christians may claim to love this humble carpenter from Nazareth, but we don’t act Christlike a lot of the time." This week, we’re thrilled to re-release Jesus Died for This? A Satirist’s Search for the Risen Christ, by Becky Garrison. lakedrivebooks.substack.com/p/is-jesus-t...

Authors, get past any cynicism and overwhelm and instead assign great value to your wonderful online community. Major book publishers are already relying on your online community, and not nearly as much on their ability to land media for you. You have more power than they do to find your audience.

"I’ve seen enough faith fads to know one thing: when spirituality becomes a trend, it eventually gets sold at a discount." -Becky Garrison, Jesus Died for This?

"I will not take offense to being viewed as a “progressive” . . . But please understand: in a time that demands re-creation, I am a revolutionary." Love this guest post from @pastortrey05.com on @zachwlambert.bsky.social's "Public Theology" Substack. zachwlambert.substack.com/p/times-like...

The more you do this, the harder we will work. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

Donald and gang, you’re just going to make us work harder at getting books like this read by more people. Read Intersexion and we’ve got Nia Chiaramonte publishing in July. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

"The paradox of affection & exploitation is one of the most prevalent confusions related to sexual abuse, one that leaves children bewildered & tormented. Abusers don't just threaten & scare children; they often provide affection, promise security, and make the child feel special." - Galit Atlas

"My publisher, LakeDriveBooks, has been incredibly supportive throughout this entire process, helping to establish timelines, wrangle priorities, and facilitate clear communication between lots of different parties." @laurencibene.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/laurenci...

In the last week, I've had a friend get gender affirming surgery and another friend get their birth certificate updated. All, this is still resistance. And this is still worth joy and celebration.

Once upon a time I said apartheid was too reductive an explanation for Musk’s awfulness, that fascism isn’t a genetic condition, something you “have” because you were born into it. Guess in his case I was wrong.

Shhhh! It’s a secret! People are still tryna figure out what to do with denominationally promiscuous, Anablacktivist, Bapticostal, Mennonites like me 🤫

This really is fascinating news for the book world, especially indie stores! You might be "locked in" to your Kindle, but maybe now is a good time to make a switch. Watch for a special discount coming soon for Lake Drive ebooks on bookshop.org. www.wired.com/story/booksh...

Powerful forces don’t want you to read widely. It’s too democratic. But reading is resisting where you find new knowledge that centers you and brings you strength. Good reading at linkinbio or at lakedrivebooks.com.

“Every good educator should reach out to students to find connection, but I had to overcome a lot of racist baggage to make this happen. Students often expressed surprise that I didn’t have an accent. You’re not hearing an accent now, right? Right?” Asian American Apostate, @rsokamoto.bsky.social

Thanks to Claire for including me on this amazing list. My book, Asian American Apostate also talks about what I saw as the rise of MAGA in the early 2000's at an evangelical "university."

Easily the most harrowing first week of a presidential administration in my lifetime. I’m not caught off guard. All of this was telegraphed ahead of time while most of the people now doing the things played coy. Pray for mercy. Then work in it.

“So, the apparent message is that millions of people don’t really consider sexual abuse to be a big deal – at least not big enough to matter more than the cost of eggs.”

You don’t have to be intersex to have a coming out experience. The one thing all of us—gay, straight, male, female, conservative, liberal, and on the continuum between absolutes—have in common is the fear ... of what we’ll lose if we are “known.” -Cynthia Vacca Davis, Intersexion

"The greatest lessons I have been learning in my post-evangelical life have not been how to defend my new concepts of belief or how to reinterpret the Bible through a new lens. 1/

For those interested in the book business, this video is nicely revealing about how distrubution has changed. Main takeaway is that a community bookstore and brand mindset is what’s working. Also, that stat that Amazon is only 50% of the market isnt true for new authors youtu.be/Z9kOIcNUMnQ?...

Favor to ask! Would you consider following Becky Garrison on Substack?? If you've got a BS Detector for spiritual grifters, Becky is your Substack writer. And psst, she's got a book on the topic from Lake Drive in 2026. You'll want to follow! open.substack.com/pub/beckygar...
