Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Issuing a press release that claims to have found "an ocean that is teeming with life" should require much stronger evidence than this spectrum. Even if the detection is correct, that doesn't tell you how the molecules formed. 🔭🧪

It’s not life. It’s not a biosignature. I’m so tired.

This is an excellent thread explaining the multiple (and magnitude) of the uncertainties in the paper, and accompanying press reports - probably also part of the reason the author of the paper was unnecessarily rude about him on the Today Programme this morning, playing the man instead of the ball.

This is why I'm on socials less often. My bird site feed is currently people, including Journalists, smarmily saying we can't import meat from the EU to the UK now because of Brexit. Then you click through and read that it's a temporary measure because of a Foot and Mouth outbreak in Germany.

gonna start referring to the bathroom as a "dead end" and refusing to go there because it's a "waste of doors"

Apropos of nothing, there is a distinction between being an astronaut, and being a tourist in space, and it's to do with being part of a crew trained to operate the craft that one is in. I am not a pilot just because I flew across the Atlantic last week.

Seems a bit harsh on Katy Perry.

Now we know the Earth isn’t in danger, I’m very excited by the 3-4% chance asteroid #2024YR4 might hit the Moon.

It’s becoming a weekly thing now

Clear skies over the British Isles. Wildfire smoke can be seen in Northern Ireland, Wales, and southern Scotland, while Saharan dust drifts high over western Ireland.

I would love to go and see this if it wasn't 8 million pounds a ticket.

I wonder if they’re hoping for a DScilation in the tariff war?

The UK and Ireland nearly cloud free on April 2nd. Amazing colours over land and sea. Thanks to Sentinel satellites.

Remember that little asteroid a few months ago we thought might hit us? Here are new #JWST images of it (taken with its two IR instruments). We now know asteroid 2024 YR4 won't hit Earth, is about 60 m across, and is covered in first-size rocks. It might hit the Moon though and that would be COOL

I'm seeing folks dunking on this for how easy these questions were But uh ARE they that easy? Games are mainstream now, but not so mainstream that non-enthusiasts can answer questions about the biggest games in a genre that fizzled out years before they were born

Someone in the question team is clearly a Gamer™️

This morning's partial solar eclipse over Oxfordshire. Time-lapse, 1 frame every 30 seconds.

Some good UK news: Airbus UK to engineer the landing platform for Europe’s first Mars rover. The Rosalind Franklin rover, which was built entirely in Stevenage, is scheduled to launch in 2028. news.uk.cityam.com/story/231883...

Against all odds, I was able to catch a glimpse of the partial solar eclipse in the cloudy Dublin sky shortly after its peak in the recent hour.

This era is going to produce the most underwhelming espionage stories, like why is anyone going to Operation Mincemeat these people when you can just text them "Bro I lost my war plans can u resend" from "[email protected]"

I remember a few years ago now @jimalkhalili.bsky.social explained that there had been a structural change at the BBC which would directly impact science programming. As this post says, there's almost none now

It wasn't a video game crash, but rather a crash of the "American video game home console market". During this period computer games and arcade machines actually continued to be developed, sold and played without hinder.

"We lost our frisbee in the substation. We sent Jimmy in to retrieve it."

People of a certain vintage might scoff at this, but it’s a bit like quizzing people who grew up with these games about a specific genre of 1960s TV show.

It's great to see University Challenge give video games the same weight as other media. After years being stumped at classical music questions, it's nice to get some right!

Some deep video game cuts for the university challenge quarter finals. I only managed to get one of these right.

einstein sent this to curie in 1911 when she was being harassed by tabloids. it contains everything you’d want in such a letter: (1) your haters are trash (2) you’re a baller, a true queen (3) i have determined the statistical law of motion of the diatomic molecule in planck’s radiation field 🧪⚛️

Wonderful view of yesterday's Ariane 6 launch courtesy of the French air force. Not much outruns a fighter jet...but a rocket does just that!

Wow. Blue Ghost has taken is first images, and one of them was this: sunrise on the Moon. That's our Sun, as a star. From the Moon. Beautiful.

Lighter evenings incoming… ☀️ In just four weeks, the sun will be setting after 7pm, giving us more time for birdsong, golden skies, and peaceful walks... What have you spotted in nature this weekend? Share below! 👇
