What do Medgar Evers, J.D. Salinger, Yogi Berra, James Doohan, and David Niven have in common? www.biography.com/military-fig...

Superb piece by @gregsargent.bsky.social pointing out that both Trump and Musk "agree that the U.S. state should dramatically roll back its commitment to providing minimal social and economic resources for lower-income Americans, including the working poor."

As Trump’s relationship with Elon Musk implodes, the president apparently realizes that *many* former members of his team now hold him in contempt. He's not sure why. Perhaps I can help. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

If you strip away the egos and shitposting, the Trump-Musk feud is really an argument over how comprehensively to screw over poor and working people—over how best to make our society a meaner, crueler, less equal, more savage place. New piece from me: newrepublic.com/article/1962...

it does seem that the further this goes the harder it is to walk back

Not the most important thing, but are we sure Trump actually *paid* for the Tesla he allegedly bought? Did he pay by cash, credit, crypto or a wink and a nod? Did Musk issue a receipt?

I bought a sandwich on this gorgeous day in DC and thought I might eat it in Dupont Circle. But I can’t because it’s barricaded against Gay Pride marchers. I hate what my country is becoming.

Trump: No money for your Mom’s Medicaid, but $200 million for ads to promote himself. And that’s totally who Trump is and always has been.

Musk has let it be known that he plans to sit at his regular cafeteria spot & has passed a note to Donald's friends saying Trump can join him there after fourth period ends. But sources report that Trump ostentatiously tore the note up into little pieces and plans to sit at the jocks' lunch table.

NYT needs a name like Brangelina for their National Enquirer style coverage. Trusk, Mump.

As Trump attacks Harvard/higher ed, it is worth remembering that in 1819 the US Supreme Court ruled that in the United States citizens could form private corporations to promote public goods and ideas without fearing direct retribution by the state. That's part of freedom. #civilsociety

Behold, the home page of our newspaper of record on June 6, 2025.

Live with Michael Graetz, author of The Power to Destroy: How the Antitax Movement Hijacked America open.substack.com/pub/julianze... I was really honored to have Michael Graetz, one of my favorite scholars on The Long View to discuss his outstanding new book on the anti-tax movement.

Given composition and commitments of the Supreme Court, I'm somewhat relieved by this reassurance from Garber: "Harvard’s Schools continue to make plans to ensure that our international students and scholars will be able to pursue their academic work fully." TBD, if that work will be accredited.

I encourage you to be reminded what a real American President sounds like. Thank God the Meat Puppet President we have now was not in power then. 🇺🇸

What are they, high school teens who broke up? 🙄😂😅 www.nytimes.com/live/2025/06...

A few Democrats are urging the party to make amends with Elon Musk and using a bad take on history to make their case. New post at CAMPAIGN TRAILS on how wrong they are: campaign-trails.ghost.io/welcoming-th...

Trump’s administration is marshaling vast public resources and more than $1 billion worth of taxpayer money to flatter the president www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

“Racial arrogance” is such a good way of putting it. Don’t make it about the looked down upon. It’s a personal flaw.

Luce: "Musk accused Trump of ingratitude for failing to reward him for the nearly $300mn in election help he provided. But Musk’s companies have won $38bn in federal subsidies and contracts over the years. He repaid Washington by taking a chainsaw to government. Now that’s real ingratitude."

The "D-Day Prayer" radio address that President Roosevelt gave on the night of June 6 1944 is worth reading (you can also listen to it on the FDR Library website). "They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate." www.fdrlibrary.org/d-day

Completely insane viewpoint. The insane president’s most important ally - the drug-addicted wealthiest man on earth - accused him of being a pedophile and said he should be impeached. Seems important! Seems like it tells us something about these men! Seems like it could have consequences!

One of my axioms for understanding the history of the state is to measure its strength by finding the voices of those who are subjected to its authority. I hope journalists adopt this approach for understanding Trump’s shock austerity.

Fantastic oped by Catherine Fisk and Erwin Chemerinsky about the new executive order further attempting to politicize the civil service — it’s illegal seven ways to Sunday: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/06/o...

Is there a better encapsulation of the Trump era than “the schemings of unworthy men”?

Forces loyal to the president still appear to be in control of the broadcasting stations

In 1936, FDR closed out his re-election campaign by bragging to a massive crowd at Madison Square Garden that “organized money” hated him “and I welcome their hatred.” He took 60% of the vote in a 523-8 electoral college landslide. FDR knew having the right enemies could be a useful thing.

To read a review like this is to feel repaid with interest for every hour I put into this project. I learned things about my own book and cannot thank the writer enough.

ATTACK THEM ON EVERY FUCKING THING. EVERY TIME. EVERY DAY. RUIN THEIR MISERABLE LIVES. SHAME THEIR SUPPORTERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. MAKE YOUR SUPPORTERS ASHAMED TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THEM. You don’t even mention that he’s a rapist pedophile, why the fuck not? What’s wrong with you?

Deep State: Notes on the MAGA Cockfight

Of all the judgements Trump has made during his two terms as president, this may be the only one for which he is fully qualified.

In the face of abundant evidence about the devastation DOGE has caused, the laziness with which it went about its business, the dishonesty and lack of transparency, the self-dealing, the stealing of personal information, that it still gets described this way is a failure of journalism.

It's been overtaken by the Musk-Trump feud, but this session with Merz continues Trump's streak of the most embarrassing/appalling Oval Office meetings with foreign leaders in modern U.S. history.

Now wait until you hear about Trump.
