A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argue—poorly—against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond. I hope you’ll read and share the piece. stanforddaily.com/2025/04/22/w...

“The pretexts that the administration is using [to attack universities] have to do with D.E.I. and antisemitism. The real reasons, I think, are anti-intellectualism and greed, and the fact that Trump is building a mafia state.” www.nytimes.com/2025/04/21/o...

After exhaustive testing, the 3yo and I have concluded that giraffes are not well suited to life on submarines.

“Never have we so hurt and mistreated our common home as we have in the last two hundred years. Reducing greenhouse gases requires honesty, courage and responsibility. Those who will have to suffer the consequences will not forget this failure of conscience and responsibility.” — Pope Francis

As the Nordics top the charts in global happiness, you will notice that the key factors are gender equality, parental support, housing support, healthcare, access to nature, and work/life balance. A just and caring society built on trust is what makes us happy. bbc.com/travel/artic...

This is very discouraging. Science Centers and @sciencecenters.bsky.social should be particularly interested in this.

No one should be above the law, most especially the President. Ignoring a Supreme Court ruling to facilitate Kilmar Abrego Garcia's return isn't just cruel; it's unconstitutional. They're saying the quiet part aloud — if they get away with it now, they'll do it to anyone.

Donald Trump took one step closer today to openly defying a Supreme Court order—effectively daring the justices to defend the law or pack up and go home, @dgraham.bsky.social writes in The Atlantic Daily.

To arrest someone under the guise of a citizenship interview that they have waited 10 years for is beyond cruel. This is a further attack on free speech — and it won't stop on our college campuses. theintercept.com/2025/04/14/i...

In a functional democracy this would end in impeachment and prison terms for those involved. "Trump Administration Live Updates: El Salvador’s President Says He Won’t Return Man Who Was Mistakenly Deported" www.nytimes.com/live/2025/04...

The fear among academics and lawyers now talking on the record on just about any topic that involves the federal government or the White House is really extraordinary and worrisome, and getting worse, it seems to me, every week. Dissent by an establishment figures becoming verboten in the US

Let's do our jobs. Speak clearly what we know well. Help each other understand our world. Tenure is made for moments like this, to boost your security & courage. Truth & solidarity is the only path. Silence won't save you.

The most corrupt administration in American history wants you to look the other way from this. We can't. We need answers.

President Trump is using the Abrego Garcia case to establish a truly chilling proposition: that no one can stop him from imprisoning anyone he wants anywhere else in the world never to be seen or heard from again. His dream is to preside over a police state. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/o...

World's best cities list. Fun that I've been to all but 3 in the top 30. Nice to see Seattle in there at #19, but it deserves higher. www.worldsbestcities.com/rankings/wor...

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

How can America claim to be ruled by law any longer? If due process is no longer valid, anyone can be disappeared. bbc.com/news/article...

A GOP-controlled state appeals court ruled last week that over 65,000 lawful votes cast in North Carolina's Supreme Court race can be thrown out — potentially handing the race to the Republican candidate. This is what stealing an election actually looks like.

Demonstrations took place across the country, uniting a myriad of criticisms of the Trump administration under one message: "Hands off."

You cannot have a democracy if unelected (and elected) billionaires are granted total permission to break the law, in ways that are apparent to all observers
