Guidance from HHS has finally arrived, and we are pleased that someone, somewhere, possessed a spine. TL;DR - HHS employees do not have to respond to the "What did you do last week email", and if they choose to anyways, "assume that what you write will be read by MALIGN FOREIGN ACTORS".

At least three people linked to Elon Musk’s DOGE task force have access to NIH systems that control budgets, procurement, and more, according to records and internal documents viewed by WIRED.

We imagine a world where everyone can thrive in good health. Our work focuses on improving the organizations, systems, and tools designed to prepare, prevent, and respond to disease outbreaks and other public health crises.

If they are really cancelling NSF REUs, then we need to change graduate admissions to exclude or minimize the importance of past research experience. There's just no way to compete unless you are well connected or monied otherwise.

This was supposed to be a post about my lab's first funding of the year, a diversity supplement to fund our amazing research technician. The award never arrived. Now it's a post about the value of diversity and trying to persevere in these dark times. devinenilab.org/news/diversi...

Lotta question yesterday why Elon included his firing threat in the tweet but not the email. Pretty sure this is why. OPM's own lawyers say it's false. And putting it in writing in a government email is one of those major legal liability things. no lawyers sign off etc.

Everyone who ever got funding through NIAID should be aware of this bill and start sending messages to their US legislators. The bill intends to dissolve NIAID. This is Project 2025 www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...

“The terminated federal workers included veterans who became disabled during their military service. For many of them, federal work was another way to continue serving the public after a career in the military, said one veteran who has PTSD from their service.” How low can they go?😡

Here are some data documenting the funding "pause" pulled from NIH Reporter. Current results (FY25) (Red) are compared with results from FY21 (first year of Biden Administration) and FY24. Note that data from Reporter lag behind release of NoAs by ~1 week. I will be tracking this going forward.

Absolutely this. Promotion and tenure procedures and evaluations must adapt to account for this. Doing the job now is fundamentally different than doing the job 5 years ago, which was fundamentally different than doing the job 5 years before that.

I unknowingly rented Dr. Plummer’s former cottage last time I was in Woods Hole. Discovered a room full of honors and then saw a plaque on the wall of MBL! I was so happy!

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

One of the many, many “pauses” and cancellations devastating our next generation of researchers. “The NIH Intramural Program has paused the recruitment of IRTAs, CRTAs, and Visiting Fellows in all training programs pending guidance from Health and Human Services. Check back daily for updates.”

Special shout out this AM to NIH 🧪 grant mgmt specialists, POs, and SROs during this chaotic time - THANK YOU for caring for our grants and uploading scores/summary statements despite the unprecedented challenges you may be facing. You are science warriors and we APPRECIATE & SUPPORT YOU 🫶

It's me. The biomedical librarian is me. I wasn't sure whether to stay anonymous or not but I don't think it matters anymore, maybe. Thank you @usha.bsky.social and others at @statnews.com for talking about what is happening in the U.S. right now. www.statnews.com/2025/02/17/t...

I’m deeply disturbed by the widespread reports of layoffs across the federal government and I am fighting back. If you’re an impacted federal worker in Virginia, I want to hear from you. Please take a moment to share what’s going on here: www.warner.senate.gov/public/index...

ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE) If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread. There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.
