Utterly woeful stats on #housing #productivity for Australia. 50% more productive 30years ago. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

How delightful amongst the misery posts of the day to find an article extolling the virtues of #ecycling #ebike riding. Thanks @australia.theguardian.com - www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle... Wonderful machines for human-scale #adventure.

I know academics who use AI regularly, for work and play, and I'd really like them, and universities, to tell me how they contend with AI's bottomless appetites for power and water. Is asking ChatGPT to interpret a Xmas song or making it write your syllabus worth this to you?

Great reminder for anyone feeling triggered and being caught in a rising red mist at Xmas. Can be a tricky time for many families.

“If I had to pick one word to describe a healthy relationship I’d pick “safe”. We feel safe when we’re in a healthy relationship. We don’t feel like we’re about to be invalidated, put down, or betrayed. That’s what a healthy relationship is.” ~ Dr Ramani Durvasula

“This thing of ‘purity’? I’m over it…I’m three-quarters Aboriginal; are you saying I’m not Aboriginal? It’s that colonial mindset that just keeps surfacing…We’ve got to start looking outside the box and seeing the value of these animals within the landscape.” www.smh.com.au/national/for...

Love to see #ruralliving stories that get covered by ABC and @australia.theguardian.com - this ones a cracker, letting folks know that #droving is still a viable job choice: www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

Excellent article.... Not paywalled😎 doi.org/10.1038/s442...

Always enjoy TheRegister takes on tech, in this case turning the lens onto #BlueSky and some #scaling challenges: www.theregister.com/2024/12/02/b... - kudos to the team behind the scenes battling the spotfires. Scaling this fast is impressive, regardless.

Good to see some #architecture that pushes back on Australian obsession with home size: www.abc.net.au/news/2024-12... - this sounds worthy of a visit.

I'm eternally grateful for the #disability workforce who help inject a dose of reality into spurious tech claims of healthcare utility. Thanks @asherwolf.bsky.social for keeping it real. #healthcare Value this work!

Repair shop. My @smh @theage cartoon.

#IndigenousFuturism Important work being done within #AIethics on the colonialism of LLM - training sets are built on knowledge representations that exclude many ways of knowing, being, connecting. theconversation.com/ai-affects-e... Hard to balance this one against #AI #energyfootprint

Interesting, by @airspothealth.bsky.social on Twitter: "Use of portable air cleaners to reduce aerosol transmission [...] With 2 small domestic air cleaners in a single patient room of a hospital ward, 99% of aerosols could be cleared within 5.5 minutes." airspothealth.com/a/blog/use-o...

Posting this for colleagues still finding themselves #flying between continents. Makes me want to double down on creating #remotework inclusion possibilities as a threat mitigator.

🥳 Our Destructive Polarisation article hit 1,550 views on @icsjournal.bsky.social in 2 months! We conceptualise 5 symptoms of destructive polarisation through a digital media & communication lens. Posting👇🏼on the release of “Online Misinformation in Australia” report focusing on media literacy to combat mis/disinformation among adults. Being released now. #medialiteracy

Good to see focus on #MTBI in the #VeteranRC as part of future focus for veteran wellbeing. #VeteranHealth Tuning into livestream and formal DVA response. www.dva.gov.au/about/our-wo...

Good to see ongoing focus on #barkindji country and its catchments, communities. Had formative years living at #BourkeNSW - cannot recommend highly enough that people visit, explore, understand this massive arterial river system + advocate for its health. #MurrayDarling

Some good call-outs evident in posts from @histoftech.bsky.social of stress testing, probing attacks by what look like #ChatGPT insult bots on @bsky.app - am sure @safety.bsky.app are likely on it, but good trigger for #InfoSec call for "Avengers, assemble". #PlatformGrowingPains

In my tech work, I explore intersections of #AI #LLM + #GenerativeAI - building on earlier PhD work, where I was investigating #MedicalAI In each of these contexts, there are unspoken, unknown actors, voiceless in training data. Precious spaces without voice. #BeTheLorax

Grateful to have contributed to this fascinating study led by Dr. Liye Zou on how short exercise breaks during sitting can sharpen cognitive function and enhance brain and microvascular health. Here's the breakdown 🧵 👇

Interesting to have what we all knew confirmed. There are several papers by Finnish research, Samuli Laato, on both Pokemon Go and its predecessor, Ingress, as location data gathering schemes. The whole project was originally overseen by CIA-funded, Niantic... www.networkworld.com/article/9536...

Surveillance as a service is going to be a booming business until our nations have affirmative, actionable data privacy laws. Also, as I discuss at great length in my new book... once these location data have been collected, they'll inevitably be hacked, leaked, and/or sold to the worst people.

"Office buildings have become like web browsers – they're full of tracking technology" @theregister.com on my new study that examines behavioral monitoring in the workplace, including how Cisco turns its Wi-Fi access points into indoor location tracking systems: www.theregister.com/2024/11/27/w...

NEW RESEARCH to be presented at RSNA conference from Univ of Iowa shows: Causative relationship between brain & lung dysfunction Small study shows ⏬ rates of pulmonary gas exchange lead to impaired cognitive function & diminished white & grey brain matter🧠 17.6% of 🇺🇲 have had #LongCovid & ...1/3

What happens when no one has guns? You can send your kids to school, go to concerts, cinemas, nightclubs, work, parties, supermarkets without fear.

Those experiencing #homelessness die younger and at higher rates than people who are housed, we have been saying this for years and the research has been clear for decades. Thanks for the new report, we really need #housing #affordablehousing #publichousing and #permanentsupportivehousing

"Federal Labor’s promises on the environment, it seems, come with an asterisk that they will only be implemented with the permission of the fossil fuel lobby." Nicely summarised @keanebernard.bsky.social

I reviewed @randomwalker.bsky.social @sayash.bsky.social ‘s AI Snake Oil for our office blog; the title is not me being cheeky- it’s from a sociologist of science 😅 www.lcfi.ac.uk/news-events/...

Good to see this from Andrew Wilkie, willing to reflect, reconsider from the POV of impacted youth/kids. There are ample touchpoints for #socialmedia platforms to engage with for #onlinesafety - but regulatory guardrails are needed. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Better to farm solar for energy than to farm crops to use for biofuels Far better 1 hectare annual yield: 2t soy bean ➡️ 800 litres biodiesel ➡️ 8.29 MWh 70t sugar cane ➡️ 7000 litres ethanol ➡️ 57.5 MWh 600 kW solar ➡️ ➡️ 900 MWh (low estimate)
