Starmer is playing the board as he sees it. A game of strengths and weaknesses, wins and losses. And he's playing it well.

All in all, Starmer’s first Trump White House visit looks like it couldn’t have gone much better. No 10 will be delighted and relieved, his enemies bitterly disappointed.

For someone who “doesn’t do performative politics” that was a very good show. There’s still a lot more to be done rather than just said, but Keir Starmer - and the team who prepared him can be pleased with that. Where was Elon Musk btw?

There’s going to be a lot of hat-eating tonight. Critics will find a way to do the PM down, of course. Say he gave too much or too little. Was too fawning or not enough. They'd have done it better. Nothing will come of it. But in their black shrivelled heart they'll know Starmer played a blinder.

This week's column asks a question that should be in everyone's minds, as Trump reshapes the world's alliances: How, given that our defence and security capacities are completely infiltrated by the US state, do we defend ourselves if the US becomes our opponent? www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Just an hour after Elon retweeted claims Slim had ties to drug cartels, the Mexican billionaire announced the transfer of all of his projects with Starlink for the next 5 years – worth $22Bn – to companies in China & Europe. The genius co-president just lost his main partner in 25 countries.

On his own social media platform, and without providing any evidence to back up his claims, Elon Musk indicates the skies over America are deeply dangerous for air travelers. And, of course, that his company - quite by chance, you understand - will be filling the breach.

Ultimately, growth means little if people cannot feel the benefits or see positive change. Our goal is to deliver economic growth in every corner of our city that helps to raise living standards, puts more money in people's pockets & enables us to invest in our public services.

President Trump’s order abolishing the “X” gender marker and recognizing only birth sex has caused confusion and anxiety for trans, intersex and gender-nonconforming American travelers who are applying for or renewing passports. Here's what to know about the policy.

"The Trump administration is saying: 'These guys are going against the woke agenda. Let's help them out'." Why did The White House help the Tate Brothers?

EXCL: Keir Starmer’s decision to cut foreign aid budget to pay for increased defence is a “strategic mistake” that will add to burden on Britain’s armed forces, former army chief tells ⁦‪@alethaadu www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Andrew Tate has been accused of rape and human trafficking in the UK. An attempt by the Trump administration to stand in the way of Britain's justice system would be deeply wrong. The Tate brothers must face justice here in the UK.

Trump administration ends funding for UN program fighting HIV/Aids

Every news channel has been saying all day the Tate brothers' history is one of misogyny, their return is shady, and the effect on victims traumatic. AND YET... all of them are standing by to livecast any remark the Tates care to make after landing, live and in full. You are part of the problem.

It is about separating and creating an enemy within and what's sad is that Suella Braverman is doing this to herself. Suella Braverman claims despite her British birth, education, and decade as an MP, she is not English.

The sickest patients are supposed to get priority for lifesaving transplants. But nearly 20% of the time, the American organ transplant system is skipping over hundreds or even thousands of people when it distributes kidneys, livers, lungs and hearts, a New York Times investigation found.

Air traffic controllers are required by law to retire at 56. It is a high-stress, high-intensity job that requires intense focus. The retirement rules are there to keep us all safe. This fucking guy has no clue what's he's doing.

Andrew Tate has left Romania for US by private jet, reports say

There are reports that Andrew Tate and his brother have left Romania for the USA via private jet. Despite facing charges including human trafficking and sexual misconduct, it would appear the Trump administration has helped him to go home. Tate is a vocal supporter of Donald Trump.

I imagine Suella Braverman who says the point is to defend Judeao-Christian heritage has not even noticed she is saying 99% of British Jews can't be English, including the third and fourth generation who have identified as English since they were in primary school

The White House limited newswires in a takeover of the press pool. The AP, Reuters and Bloomberg News released a statement objecting to the decision

Elon Musk: "We will make mistakes. We won't be perfect ... so for example, with USAID, one of the things we accidentally canceled very briefly was ebola prevention."

The editors of Reuters, the AP and Bloomberg, the three permanent wires in the White House press pool, have issued a joint statement warning that moves to exclude the AP threaten the public access to information about government that is "essential in a democracy" reutersagency.com/resources/st...

The effects of the House’s proposed “Medicaid cuts to pay for tax cuts” in one graph: a 3.9% boost in income for the top 1% of households and a 7.4% reduction in income for the bottom fifth of households. In two words: class warfare. www.epi.org/blog/the-hou...

Charge women who miscarry with murder, but allow parents to slowly kill their child with vaccine preventable diseases. Fuck Jenny McCarthy and RFK and everyone in between.

Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of Bezos' move, the WashPo was a liberal paper and its readers identified as such. It's always a bold move to sack your readers. Ordinarily I'd assume Bezos worked off the data but this feels different

Caring has shaped my life, from looking after my mum and my nanna, to caring for my wonderful son, John. In May, I'm releasing my new book Why I Care. It’s my story, but it’s also the story of millions of carers who give everything for those they love.

Democracy dies in deference

So for example with USAID, one of the things we accidentally canceled briefly was Ebola prevention, which was nice.

If the stakes weren’t so high, the contortions & humiliations of all the people who cheered this in & sneered about ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ etc would be absolutely hilarious.

Complete batshit lunacy on the president's Truth Social account. Yes, he really posted this.

These are dark days. But for Starmer, the collapse of the old order is a moment of political promise. He can use it to remake his premiership and the continent: new political space has unfolded before him in every direction. Will he seize it? New writing from me. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

Let's hope this means there is a good chance of criminal proceedings and not something more troubling. www.bbc.co.uk/news/a...

We must get serious. Now excuse me while I wang on about pronouns in a speech about defence

Still makes me SO FKN ANGRY that Johnson ‘purged’ the Conservative Party of decent, thoughtful people like Burt, Gauke or Grieve, to replace them with Gullises, Bentons and Andersons. This idiotisation of the Tories led DIRECTLY to Truss/Badenoch - and a golden chance for Farage’s latest grift.
