The English have such an odd r’ship with death. Just noticed an ad on daytime TV for a cremation service for people inclined to pre-arrange. The framing is not wanting to bother their family, who can arrange a funeral when suits them, and ‘tick it off’ the list. Yikes.

When talking about Irish dialects let’s normalizing Ulster as belonging to the north of ireland, more generally. While often unintentional the tendency to conflate ulster with Donegal alone is inaccurate and exclusionary. Love always to Donegal notwithstanding, it is the best county x

We launched the Society for the Study of the Past yesterday at our Palestine event - a response to the fact that our disciplinary associations have failed us. It’s already looking like the only club I want to be in… More coming soon, but for now check it out here: societyforthestudyofthepast.com

Around 400,000 people work in universities across the UK, and more then 200,000 of them are academics. The closures and job losses we’re seeing in the sector just now are a major industrial crises affecting the key workplaces and economic drivers of hundreds of towns and cities.

whatever bespoke hypothetical thing you mean by "end social justice practices in the workplace", this version that they mean is the actual, concrete political project confronting labor and the left right now. move accordingly

I wrote a brief article on the challenge that AI presents to archaeological visualisation. Check it out here: theconversation.com/how-ai-image... Though I have done a lot of scicomm, it was the first time I'd written for The Conversation. 🏺 +

The commemorative hearings for those murdered at Omagh are deeply moving and should be shared and read by everyone. Remembering the devastation of that day and those who are no longer with us due to this senseless act of attempted sabotage of a fledgling peace.

The very fabulous research space I work at - the Radical Humanities Laboratory - is now on bluesky! I highly recommend giving @radhumslab.bsky.social a follow if you’re interested in cutting edge, -disciplinary research, including our events!

Please join us for Dónal's talk next week - everyone EXTREMELY welcome at the lab space, Wandesford Quay. (Also this is our first post, so hello!)

Someone should write a book about how this "new" global racist Anglosphere is a legacy of the racism of the British empire and its 19th Century partners #Empireworld www.thetimes.com/article/1ebd...

Really wish the public face of archaeology was not hunting for dead, famous men. First Richard III and now Patrick Sarsfield. Is there any reason to repatriate him to Limerick other than justify digging him (or someone!) up? www.rte.ie/news/munster...

Looking at some of the ppl having whataboutery debates re the role of activism and boycotting, in particular, in their form of academic i always ponder - what would these people have done during Apartheid? I’m almost certain they’d have found an intellectual argument to do nothing.

And if anyone was in any doubt that the tech bros would do whatever they can to facilitate Trump and his attempts at tyranny, they can be quickly dispelled. I was teaching 4-6 yesterday, dire reports about an incoming storm - éowyn - and managed to grab some food in m&s on the way home. Grabbing essentials just incase. Unlike pandemic panic buying there was definitely dinner party vibes in the noticeable dearth of fancy garlic breads and wine! haha!

I've created a Starter pack for Irish Libraries & Libraries. It's by no means comprehensive so please let me who I should add to it. And let's try to build a lovely little Irish Library community like we used to have on the other place. go.bsky.app/HZuHx7y

Who would have thought we’d get almost exact rehashings of ethno nationalist interpretations of monuments - as people such as David Harvey have highlighted - that were being instrumentalised to ‘other’ ppl for centuries.

Very sad news about Tony Slattery, such a talented person who lived with such a volatile condition. RIP. www.rte.ie/entertainmen...
