Seeing Gabby Bernstein at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles tonight.

Loved this moment.

Why is it so hard to admit that maybe you’re not the target audience for the halftime show? Not everything is about YOUR generation or YOUR taste.

Make sure you’re buying banned books (multiple copies if you can) and keep them. History requires this.

My Republican friends have gotten real quiet this week.

If you wanted to decrease the cost of homes, one thing you wouldn’t do is put a flat tariff on your main source of timber.

Wow she was just stunning and so accomplished. Her future was bright quite possibly would have been OUR future given the path she was on. Think of what the world has lost with this tragedy. 💔

When asked if he was going to visit the crash site he said, ‘what site? The water? You want me to go swimming?’ This is one of the last pics of the young skaters who died. He’s a sociopath. Anyone who voted for this monster should be ashamed at best.

My podcast episode this week is a continued reflection of my last 15 years of working on the internet and, after working on 3 different podcasts, what I would do if I was starting a podcast in 2025. www.10thingstotellyou.com/podcast/254

I think it’s confusing when it says on a book cover “Winner of the Pulitzer Prize” but it means the author won it for something else and not that the book itself is a Pulitzer Prize Winner.

Does anyone have a peloton treadmill?

I’m catching up on email today and find myself wanting to sign off with some version of Happy New Year, even though it’s the third week of January. But if you’re in Los Angeles, you didn’t get much “beginning of the year” normalcy. Also there hasn’t been much happy. So it’s all weird.

The Senate confirmed Marco Rubio as Secretary of State by a vote of 99-0. Democrats offer an endless supply of goodwill to Republicans that will never be reciprocated.

I love this so much! At the inauguration, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wore a distinctive collar adorned with cowrie shells, which are believed to offer protection from evil in African traditions. This choice mirrors the late Justice Ginsburg’s practice of using collars to convey a message.

I really intended to stay off social media today, but that was a massive fail. I just couldn’t keep from watching people show who they are.

I’m sharing my Favorite Books of 2024! My Secret Posts email newsletter is free and has all the recommendations: open.substack.com/pub/secretst...

The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen is the first Secret Stuff Book Club pick of the year. Lots of drama around this 2001 novel that won the National Book Award and ranked #5 on the NYT Best Books of the Century. You should join us for this discussion: secretstuff.substack.com/p/secret-stu...

Before you send that text out the complete blue sky, whether it’s for condolences or congratulations, think about if YOU would like to hear from THEM if the situations were reversed. Are you sending the message for THEM or for YOU? Be honest.

The kids went back to school today in LA. It was quiet at carpool, clearly not every family is there. They don’t have to wear their uniforms this week because some students no longer have their uniforms.

Republicans: basketball players should shut up and dribble Also Republicans: next up is our chief natural disaster correspondent Mel Gibson

I was finally able to write a little bit about this week. This post is public, you don’t have to subscribe or anything. If it takes you to the subscribe page, just hit “let me read it first.” secretstuff.substack.com/p/dispatch-f... Thank you for all the love and support. LA needs it. ❤️

The Red Cross just said on @abc7.bsky.social that mostly they need financial donations right now and not clothes, water, etc.

We are safe and at home with our pets, all fine and not currently in danger of the LA Fires. We did have to evacuate earlier in the week due to the Sunset Fire, but have been home and safe since. We have so many friends and school classmates who can’t say the same.

The air purifiers we bought during the pandemic are coming in handy right now. As you can imagine, the air quality in Los Angeles is rough. Just looking for patterns in a world that otherwise doesn’t make sense.

I don't know if the LA fire department is properly funded or not but the claim that the city cut its budget last year — which is circulating widely on the right — is false. As Politico notes, the budget actually INCREASED by $50 million. A portion of the funding was approved in a separate bill.

It wasn’t always like this.

Sunset Hollywood Hills fire: The fire is 10 acres on the ridge per Incident Command. Evacuation zones: Laurel Canyon Blvd (on the west) to Mulholland Dr (on the north) to 101 Freeway (on the east) down to Hollywood Blvd (on the south).

Just wanted you to know that we’re currently safe but are watching our beautiful city burn and it is absolutely surreal.

Los Angeles received just 0.16 inches of rain since May 2024, the second-driest period on record. Wildfires are now engulfing the city in January. But some politicians still claim the climate crisis is a "hoax" as they do the bidding of Big Oil. What planet are they living on?

I’m dreading the sun going down tonight in Los Angeles.

I can hear the trash trucks outside picking up trash on this smoky LA morning and somehow this is very disconcerting to me.

For those evacuating with pets in LA: Hilton’s Homewood Suites, Home2 Suites, Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton, Tru and Canopy brands are all 100% pet friendly. Even cats! And a lot of hotels are waiving pet fees atm. Good on u Hilton! Pun intended: that’s hot.

I’m in multiple mom text threads that are keeping me sane. Everyone is scared. We all know people who have lost their homes. We’re sharing advice and news alerts and sometimes humor to cope. But this is just really, really bad. Hard to describe what Los Angeles feels like right now.

We’re okay but it was a very long night. Winds are just insane. Power is out across Los Angeles. Hours to go until these winds die down. Just devastated for all the loss and the beautiful parts of our city that have been destroyed.

11:30pm. We’re the blue dot.

If you are in the Los Angeles area, here's where to get information on the fires: - View the fire map at fire.ca.gov - Download the Watch Duty app - Sign up for NotifyLA alerts with the city at emergency.lacity.gov

Los Angeles from the air 😳💔

In addition to the fires destroying the Palisades (the west side of Los Angeles) and the rapidly moving fire in Alta Dena (NW of the city center), there is now a new fire and evacuation orders for Sylmar, in the deep valley just north of Los Angeles.

We’re still okay over here but it’s going to be a very long night. In all my 23 years in Los Angeles, I’ve never been through anything quite this apocalyptic.

My kids school just got canceled for tomorrow because of the wind and fires and power outages all over Los Angeles. We are fine right now, but this is really scary. The wind is very, very intense.

I’m in Hollywood keeping a very close watch on the Palisades Fire. The winds here are very strong. I can’t imagine fighting a fast moving fire in these conditions.
