all the examples I’ve seen from this book are so funny. his publisher should have had it fact checked by anyone who has ever had a real job outside academia

Seeing AI people refer to 100% confidence intervals, we’re ngmi

“I asked chatGPT-“ ok, and I asked Tinsel, and she said you’re an uninspired, vapid dork who needs a computer to think for them.

Short thread (hopefully in plain English) on the nuclear deterrence dynamics in the India-Pakistan relationship and where this goes if escalation continues. <1>

Learn to cook, eat a good breakfast every day, and watch about for leading zeroes in string representations of numbers

Quite the payoff

The best POPS is the one by your office, where you can take a few minutes on a busy day, or grab lunch and sit in the sunshine

“The pope will be from Chicago” sounds like an 1880s Republican’s dire prediction for if we don’t stop Irish immigration

The rats have chosen a new pope.

In grad school, we were told we needed to keep our student evals above 4/5 when we were teaching (5/5 being best). Do you really think that's going to encourage "cracking down," especially in cases of ambiguity?

Oh look, a dog owner is allowed to behave irresponsibly, and we all have to bear the consequences. Not surprising, especially if you've seen the off-leash dogs in Central Park www.westsiderag.com/2025/05/08/d...

The Dem focus on "registering new voters" seems to have failed. Only in WI did first-time 2024 voters swing towards Harris, in every other case, they went *hard* for Trump. Really makes you think canvassing to register new voters wasn't the best use of resources!

We're starting to get voter file data back and Change's model indicates that the biggest contributor to Kamala losing was new voters entering the electorate breaking heavily toward Trump substack.com/home/post/p-...

There's been an uptick in non-murder crimes under Adams; I wonder how much of it is related to him putting cronies in positions of power for much of his term, leading to less effective governance? www.politico.com/news/2025/05... That said, we're still safer than every other major city in the US

"Andor" is what happens when you keep Dave Filoni away from your live-action Star Wars series

Does anyone have a fave before/after toll shot of Manhattan congestion?

Anyone who says German tanks were better than the Sherman or T-34 is huffing sauerkraut farts. The "wonder weapon" tanks were all overbuilt and underpowered, with an ethos of "why use one part when you could use four?"

When the smoke coming out of the Vatican is black and white checkerboard:

House Dem Oversight story mostly a farce now. Connolly hasn't said when he'll go so Ds defer on any Qs about replacing him. Non-AOC young Dems keep campaigning (Garcia, Crockett) but the math says Lynch wins. In meantime, the face of Dem Oversight is an old, ailing man who can't do media hits.
