I'd like to see more stories about people changing their opinions. This is a good moment for anti-imperialist leftists to reconsider their distaste for Ukraine and give their Cold War-era reasoning an update.

Saw an unpretentious yet wise documentary about an 84-year-old DJ in Warsaw (dedicated to "our future selves"). Watched it in Kino Krokodil, a small Berlin cinema with an Eastern European focus, no snacks, but vodka. Going to the movies alone = the best www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoQ2...

Twitter won't die easily, all the middle-aged men who made their five-digit follower count their entire personality and are addicted to one-liner quippy comment-based conversations with five other similar guys will carry it into the solar death of the universe.

Women, Nationalism, and Social Networks in the Habsburg Monarchy, 1848–1918 (Purdue University Press, 2023) edited by Marta Verginella explores how feminist nationalism thrived during the late Monarchy. Read @leahorvat.bsky.social's review here: ceureviewofbooks.com/review/netwo...

Wrote a short review of a book I thoroughly enjoyed! 🙏@anditalaber.bsky.social for a very smooth and professional editing experience, 🙏 @ceureviewofbooks.bsky.social for creating an aesthetically and conceptually fresh and appealing outlet for book reviews (and more) on Central and Eastern Europe.

Tiny treasures: to have a Kuchentransporter and a home you’re invited to on Sunday to take it out

Not very fun fact: thousands of Jewish immigrants with whose presence Germany has decorated itself, my parents included, are not voting today b/c they don’t have a path to citizenship, despite living there for two decades or more. www.juedische-allgemeine.de/gemeinden/ke...

Nervous about today! My vote goes to Die Linke, the only party consistently pushing against anti-immigrant fearmongering and for “tax the rich” + their campaign was a success (finally some viral leftists!). Not agreeing with them on everything, but the overlap is significant enough.

Not a fan of literal 1930s analogies (and much of the vocabulary that comes with that), but you know what? This is actually good and probably should be projected onto the Konrad Adenauer Haus: datajournal.org/schon-wieder/

The Pomodoro technique breadified: Work while your sourdough (potato-walnut rye in this case) is in the oven

Love how, when German cuisine goes overboard, the result is... different soup carbs? "Wedding soup" with Grießklößchen, Eierstich, and Flädle—making Eierstich for the first time today!

Friday: got useful feedback on my 1st habilitation chapter, turned 2.5 h of home office into lake office, thinking it through before revising+enjoying fresh snow. Got back refreshed & motivated. 110% recommend. Love how easily you can do a short pristine outing from Berlin by public transport.

Just read a short Zeit article on the rising mistrust of Muslims in German politics; the comments below are appalling. I get the impression that a significant portion of liberal, leftish Germans choose to see this as a non-issue and (more or less quietly) envision a society without these people.

The translation of my book on Yugoslav mass housing into Croatian is on the way (luckily, not done by me) and set to be published in 2026 🥳 German colleague: What do you mean you don’t have to pay for it?! That’s how deeply entrenched we are in this flawed academic publishing system.

Now here's an attractive CFP: Railway Aesthetics: Experiencing Locomotion across Media and Cultures. Takes place ON THE TRAIN Vienna-Bucharest-Istanbul, 10-13 September 2025. Deadline for submissions: May 2, 2025 call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu/cfp/2025/02/...

For me, one of the most striking differences when living abroad is how the perception of distance and how the radius of what feels manageable without car changed.

"telling a social movement organizing societal outcasts 'not like that' licenses the reactionary violence, while telling that reactionary violence 'hey, also not like that' will not change a goddamn thing"

Last day to apply for the new semester at IUFU, including our course "Semi-periphery and Borderlands in the European integration: Rethinking Balkans for Ukraine." Apply here: forms.gle/8V8uv5y7kuLD...

German lit critical elite try to discuss an Albanian author, but (w/ one exception) don’t bother to look up how to pronounce his name or Hoxha’s, for that matter. www.zdf.de/kultur/das-l...

An underrated weekend trip from Berlin: Visit Cottbus to appreciate a variety of Altstadtplatte—a late socialist reconciliation of modernist mass housing and historic Altbau architecture.

Spotted in „zu verschenken“ in my local Stadtbibliothek 🙃

Just sent out a first draft of the first non-introductory chapter (on waitresses!) of my habilitation to my boss. Can’t believe this day has come and that this book will eventually become a reality! But first, I’m taking a few days of vacation 🤝Schulferien with my kid before we discuss it next week.

"A movement without a leader makes it difficult for the regime to identify key organizers, therefore to intimidate or corrupt them. In addition, this preserves the movement from potential fragmentation and inner crisis. On the other hand, it encourages broader participation"

"Manchmal fühle ich mich komisch gemustert, wenn ich meine Sprache mit meinen Kindern spreche. (...) Beginne ich jetzt, paranoid zu werden? Ich wehre mich innerlich dagegen, doch das Kind in mir fängt an, sich zu erinnern." My dear friend Željana wrote about Jena & Yugoslavia taz.de/Sprache-und-...

Not-so-humble brag: Student evaluations made my day during this last week of the semester! 🥰 Always grateful to the students who take the time to fill them out and always interesting how the question of mutual respect receives special mention in German academia 🙃

I expect nothing from the CDU, but I’m thinking of an acquaintance “Hate is never the answer” in bio, outraged by current events yet unashamedly anti-muslim, leaving 1-star reviews for migrant business daring not to be dirt-cheap, using admin tricks to avoid "Brennpunktschule" my kid attends.

Is anyone interested in organizing a food- and drink-focused panel for #ASEEES25? My research centers on coffee, chicory, and the Habsburg semi/periphery, with potential extensions into Yugoslav socialism. Let me know!

Two types of online personalities: those who prefer to display/consume the neat, polished front and those who prefer the messy, unfiltered back 1/2

Back on Bluesky! I’m not entirely sure about its potential as a lively social network, but I’ve missed its informative academic side.
