No one gets to pretend that anti-trans rhetoric doesn't lead directly to this

You see a Pasifika person put a carton of eggs into their shoulder bag as they walk down a supermarket aisle. Are they committing the Crimes Act offence of attempted theft, allowing you to arrest them and tie them up until the Police arrive? Answer quickly.

You see someone grabbing a co-worker by the upper arm. Is this (i) a Crimes Act assault allowing you to arrest them and tie them up until the Police arrive; or (ii) a Summary Offences Act assault, in which case you cannot. Answer quickly!

And already, this. Perhaps the government could experiment with occasionally thinking it through.

Whanau, it is really, really important that sometimes we lift our heads up from the dire issues we are facing in our research system to see that we are not alone. Not only not alone, but we must stand together to fight the massive crisis threatening higher education and research globally.

I read that quote in Scar's voice from the Lion King.

I think, substantively, the protest law reforms proposed by the IPCA are poor ideas that aren't justified by its own reasoning. And procedurally, I'm not convinced they have the authority to make this recommendation. Any Wellington barristers with some free time want to push the ultra vires angle?

Call it what it is. #nzpol

Golly gosh. This report came out of the blue — with legislative reform proposals that would radically change protest settings here and that appear, on first blush, to be deeply concerning. 😳 www.ipca.govt.nz/Site/publica...

I finally made it to RNZ! 🤓

#NZ “Overall, online harm endangers representative democracy and breaches #WomensRights to participate in politics.” #OnlineViolence #Misogyny & #WomenInLeadership www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

Even I was surprised by this. ACT can’t even be bothered to show up and listen to TPB submissions. Thanks to @duncanwebbmp.bsky.social for bringing this forward.

Social media companies will continue to post any content with impunity until legally compelled to do otherwise. #nzpol

Relying on voluntary commitments to reduce online harm puts New Zealand out of step with other countries with legally enforceable rules to protect social media users’ safety.

Please 🙏

🚨 Pleased to share my latest opinion piece! Here I unpack what’s going on with Aotearoa New Zealand’s online safety Code and why the Human Rights Commission was right, the Code is not fit for purpose – particularly when it comes to gender-based violence. theconversation.com/online-viole...

I have been so deeply disillusioned by this since it's happened and am kind of glad the story has been published now. It's bloody grim. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

Online safety agencies should be more concerned with the escalation of online harm than getting upset at the HRC for pointing out, rightly, that their Code is not fit for purpose.

To be clear, I'm not in the 'never repeat disinfo, even to point it out' camp, but this is incredibly poor form from The Herald. They shouldn't have gone to Brian Tamaki for comment in the first place, let alone block quote his provably false rhetoric that defames an individual and harms others.

Today marks 2 years since my book came out, had a look at my city's library and six (out of 17) copies are currently checked out. Given the nature of the book, it's a blessing and a curse that it's still topical

Just because the photo is taken in public doesn't mean that posting it like this isn't image based abuse. This is continued online violence against a woman who is no longer a public figure. Gross. Ugh - and nzherald shouldn't be using it either! www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/image-lea...

Oh the poor babies, I too hate it when my chickens come home to roost and subsequently shit everywhere

⚠️ It's the final day to submit on the anti stalking bill. ICYMI here's my own submission in case it's helpful for you to write your own 👇

📢 Submissions on the Crimes Legislation (Stalking and Harassment) Amendment Bill close 11.59pm this Thursday (Tomorrow!) The proposal to criminalise stalking is welcome. However, there are some notable shortcomings to the Bill. Here's my own submission, in case it is helpful! (Full text on Linkedin)

Doing the kind of research I do means I know the kind of online abuse MPs get on a daily basis. I know the likely costs of that long term. On them. Their family. Democracy. Therefore, it would be terribly hypocritical for me to cyberbully an MP. So, Simeon Brown ... I say nothing. You're welcome.

What’s this? Wonderful news?!? In MY doomscroll feed?!? This is glorious! ❤️❤️❤️

Stamping out racism and xenophobia requires us to emphatically and unequivocally condemn it whenever we see it. For as long as Ministers do not clearly condemn yesterday’s obvious racism and xenophobia from two of their fellow government Ministers, they enable this behaviour to take further root. 1/

The big thing about research in NZ I struggle to get across to people is how scarce jobs in *any* sector are. Between 2013 and 2023 we added 17000 PhD-holders to the population (including me!) and a net 200 FTE of jobs in R&D (all sectors) held by PhDs. Yikes!

Grim reading, but I especially like (and agree with) this part: "Governments need to recognise these platforms are not immutable forces of nature, but human-created systems that can be challenged, reformed or dismantled." theconversation.com/as-the-digit...

Paywall now lifted: The Government has forced more legislation all the way through Parliament under urgency in its first 400 days than any since at least 1987. newsroom.co.nz/2025/01/28/g...

The US and QLD, Australia are rolling back trans healthcare. These conversations are also happening here. This is awful awful awful www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01...

I appreciate all the people recommending the Shock Doctrine. I've been thinking about what makes Trump's use of these tactics a little different. In recent decades, shock tactics were used mainly to rapidly impose neoliberal economic policies. But what Trump is doing goes way beyond that. a 🧵

Well, there it is ... expected it, but wow, this is monstrous. CW: transphobia and dehumanisation. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

Privatisation is such a scam. It’s just asset stripping. When NZ Rail was privatised the new owners made it ‘profitable’ by closing down lines and literally ripping up the steel rails and selling them offshore. Once they realised profits from asset stripping they sold the company back to Govt.

This is exactly what I feared would happen and is completely outrageous. The govt wants to set up a brand-new PRO focusing on areas many researchers at Callaghan are experts in but won't offer them jobs. Researchers are not replaceable widgets, we can't just order 200 new ones when we need them!
