Every time someone writes a smug poorly-argued AI article like this, they’re simply demonstrating how swiftly AI has already transformed said writer’s critical thinking into a rotten log on the forest floor, studded with grubs and slime mold, gently disintegrating into humus even as we watch.

No one hates Trump’s voters more than Trump himself.

🚨 There’s a lot of horrific news out of Washington right now—but you might have missed this: Senate Republicans just introduced a plan to sell off 120 million acres of our public lands. Let me break down what’s in the bill and why it’s a full-scale land grab. 🧵

I got a great Eurasian Lynx sighting while visiting Sweden this year. I am so excited about it. 🦊🧪📷

We're so excited to host Jess Walter and Chad Smith with SO FAR GONE this Friday at 6pm. This event is free for The Lynx's First Editions Club members. Non-members can purchase tickets here: thelynxbooks.com/events/25505...

…he had the revelation, nearly religious, that the colossal scale of evil could only be matched or countered by some solitary flicker of intense and private humanity. THE TRANSIT OF VENUS, Shirley Hazzard

[Exit King.]

No kings. Fuck ICE. Thank you for taking your voice out to the streets today, if that’s what you’re doing. I’m in France but there with you in spirit. Stay safe.

Seems bad.

Librarians, teachers, and bookstore owners are having a day of action tomorrow, 6/7! Support the teaching of history and the freedom to read. Learn more below; find an event near you here: www.zinnedproject.org/news/teach-t...

According to Olivier Cohen (one of the most interesting people out there & the founder of my French publishing house), I discovered today that Cormac McCarthy had A la recherche de temps perdu in mind when he wrote his Border Crossing trilogy (!!! and ???).

In one of my favorite places with one of my top-three humans.

This whole AI scam is really just billionaires holding the rest of us hostage to their sunk-cost fallacy panic.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Somebody Should Do Something About All The Problems

Forrest Gump paved the way for Donald Trump. Their names even rhyme.

It’s weird to live in a time when basic principles like cruelty is wrong, cheating is empty & the idea that curiosity, generosity, originality, the satisfaction of earned accomplishments & loving intimacy are the center of a good life feel like countercultural concepts

Happy Mother's Day! One day, I hope that every mother will be a willing mother, and every child will be a wanted child. That's why I donate to abortion funds. Find your local fund here: abortionfunds.org/find-a-fund/

The cost of the 4 F-18 planes lost in the Red Sea ($240 million) is now greater than the 2025 NEH Budget ($200 million)

1) USPS did not lose $3.3b. It provided a service that cost $3.3b. *The Pentagon* loses you money, however, every time it accidentally yeets a fighter jet off the deck of a carrier

I’m not even Catholic, but I cried when I heard that the new pope said this: “a bishop is not supposed to be a little prince sitting in his kingdom, but rather called authentically to be humble, to be close to the people he serves, to walk with them and to suffer with them.”

If I knew my sons used AI to plagiarize even one essay, every time they’d look at me, they’d be seeing my disappointment in their broken moral code for YEARS.

The devastating, shortsighted attack on literature continues. List from Magic City Books. Who'd they miss? Note: the small publishers selected here for financial attack include (among other very worthy and important presses) @transitbooks.bsky.social, publisher of 2023 Nobel laureate Jon Fosse.

I don't 'refuse to use' AI, I just don't use AI; in the same way that I don't shoplift, or plagiarise other people's books - it requires no effort of will, it's just not something I would think of doing

It's Independent Bookstore Day! 4/26 come celebrate our Independent Bookstore! 4/27 The Lynx's 1st birthday! Yoga, music by Collin Whitlock & The Wirebirds, speech at 2:15 @legroff.bsky.social plus cupcakes, karaoke. & find limited-edition tees benefiting @abfefreeexpression.bsky.social

I will never understand people who come in swinging to defend the indefensible actions of large corporations. They don’t care about you. Anyway, Happy Independent Bookstore day! Show your local indie some love—or find one to love on @bookshop.org or @libro.fm Mine is @thelynxbooks.bsky.social

Fellow authors, I love you, and I know it feels like we don’t have a choice, but B&N and Am*zon both scheduled sales this week to preempt Independent Bookstore Day, a hugely vital source of income for indie bookstores. Please don’t promote their sales; please promote your local indie this week.

Y’all, Amazon is bad for writers, bad for publishers, bad for customers, bad for workers. bad for democracy. Would be wonderful if we could break its stranglehold.

I’m proud, as always, to be an Amherst College alumna.
