I'm very excited to help the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence's Survivor Justice Initiative kick off its new podcast on criminalized survivors, "Until They're Free." Listen to the first episode here: gcadv.org/sji/untilthe... #SurvivedandPunished #FreeThemAll

So. Many. Choices.

Thinking a lot today about @prisonculture.bsky.social’s “Hope is a discipline.” For me, it’s both the discipline of maintaining hope in bleak times and also the discipline of not using hope as an excuse to avoid facing what’s happening in the world.

Taking a day off from work and doomscrolling to read books, watch Sherlock, and bake cookies. Best NYT recipe comment ever:

Great way to start today: "None of this means that we don’t oppose what’s happening; that we don’t resist. It does mean that we must try to help get more lifelines to one another...", esp. to those most directly affected. inquest.org/this-is-how-... Thanks @kwhitlock.bsky.social!

The prison known as FCI Dublin, where women were sexually abused by guards, medical staff, and even the warden, was finally closed this year. But most women were transferred to facilities that also have a history of abuse by guards. boltsmag.org/federal...

What could possibly go wrong?

A survivor demanded that police and prosecutors provide information about what they had done (and not done) in her rape case. The city pursued criminal charges against her. #SurvivedandPunished #ImperfectVictims www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...

My greatest fear as a law professor-that someone I taught will say something so incredibly stupid about what I taught them.

This is who people thought might save us from HHS Secretary RFK JR? Really? Are we still refusing to acknowledge reality?

The majority of VAWA grant funding goes to courts, cops, and prosecutors (though this will absolutely hit the non-profits who receive funds-and their clients-harder). I wonder how law enforcement responds to this. truthout.org/articles/lif...

Reparations. 🤦‍♀️ (times 1,000,000). This was not on my bingo card for today. If you need me, I’ll be under my desk. theintercept.com/2025/02/04/j...

NJ Gov. Phil Murphy did a big thing: He used the clemency power to free 3 incarcerated survivors of domestic violence; they'd been locked up for crimes against their attackers. Now there's a push in other states to rethink the treatment of incarcerated abuse survivors. boltsmag.org/new-jersey-c...

Today's spiral: cutting federal funds for essential services -> inabiilty to meet basic human needs -> increase in "crime" (survival) -> increased policing, prosecution, incarceration -> breakdown of community -> justification for harsher measures, martial law? And how are you doing?

LOUISIANA PEOPLE! I need you to call Senator Dr. Bill Cassidy, telling him to NOT confirm RFK Jr for Health Secretary. He’s a swing vote! It took 40 seconds of my time to call. I left a voicemail. His staff tallies the calls. He’s a vote that can be flipped: - he’s a doctor - pro-vaccine🧵

I learned about the @eotarchive.org project earlier this year thanks to MIT libraries. Turns out librarians have been on top of systematically backing up government websites before presidential transitions for over a decade! eotarchive.org

Today, the Gibson Banks Center for Race and the Law at Maryland Carey Law School released a resource, How Schools Use Reportable Offenses in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions, which explains when law enforcement must report student arrests to schools and how schools must use this information.

Did Caroline Kennedy realize that calling her cousin a predator made him more attractive to some of these people?

Just ordered 15 boxes from a Star Wars celeb loving kid who is now much closer to her goal. And we too will have cookies.

Giving me a spot on the second floor of the parking garage is the universe's way of saying, "I know it's going to be a miserable day, but at least you'll only have to drag yourself up one flight of stairs at the end of it."

I'm so very, very tired of "pro-survivor" politicians who don't do a damn thing for criminalized and incarcerated survivors (yes, I'm still looking at you, Joe Biden--see my post from Monday...) prismreports.org/2025/01/21/k...

Perspective. It’s such an amazing thing. If you’re doomscrolling or spiraling, please read this gift of a thread.

A little good news: The Supreme Court held that the lower court erred by not considering the prejudicial impact of evidence about Brenda Andrew's sex life, clothing, and mothering, allowing prosecutors to use gender stereotypes to justify conviction. Support Brenda Andrew: www.savebrendaandrew.org

And in a final burst of hypocrisy, noted champion of survivors of domestic violence Joe Biden denies clemency to one (well, at least one--who knows what the day will bring) of my criminalized survivor clients on the way out the door. Farewell, Joe--you're the best carceral feminist I know.

Coming soon in the @stanfordlaw.bsky.social Review: Professor Aadhithi Padmanabhan's new article, Abandoning Deportation Adjudication, which argues for rigorous judicial review in deportation cases. Read it here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers..... #FacultyScholarshipFriday

"A long-time Las Vegas Metro officer was arrested on domestic violence charges Wednesday, police said." How many domestic violence calls do you think he answered? www.8newsnow.com/news/local-n...

I know that I spend a lot of time talking about how police don't prevent gender violence--they inflict it. I apologize for failing to give equal love to other parts of law enforcement, like, say, prosecutors. So to rectify that error, I give you this: www.ksl.com/article/5122...
